Entry and departure requirements
TYPE OF VISA DEFINITION
Visa
This is the authorization granted to a foreigner to enter the country as a non-resident for a certain period of time. It is applied for in advance by persons from countries whose citizens require the authorization of the National Migrations Service to enter Panama, for reasons of migratory policy. Prospective travellers should apply for this authorization at the Consulate of Panama in their respective countries; or through a lawyer residing in Panama. All of the conditions of issue stipulated by Migrations must be fulfilled. If the visa is granted, the Consulate of Panama in the country where the visa was requested will be notified so that the visa may be stamped in the traveller’s passport and the passport-holder may travel to Panama. The foreign visitor must indicate whether a tourist visa is required (in which case a period of time must be specified), or state whether he or she has the intention of residing in Panama. Migrations will then decide whether or not to issue a visa and for what length of time the applicant will be authorized to remain in Panama.
Tourist Card
Citizens from countries authorized to enter Panama with a tourist card do not require a visa. They merely need to acquire a tourist card from the airline, at a cost of PAB 5.00, fill in the information required and present it, together with their passport, upon entry to Panama. This is why the migratory categorization established by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is important. If a person comes from a country whose citizens are authorized to enter Panama with either a stamped visa or a tourist card, the visitor then has two options. To apply for a visa at the Panamanian Consulate and arrive in Panama with a visa stamped in his or her passport, or to buy a tourist card from the airline upon arrival. If a person comes from a country classified as visa only, he or she must apply for a visa at the Panamanian Consulate before travelling. Other entry conditions must be fulfilled in every case (financial solvency, a passport with a minimum validity of six months and a return passage).
Reciprocal
Agreements to Waive Visa Requirements
Countries in this category have entered into agreement with Panama by virtue of which the visa requirement is reciprocally waived.
Visa Exemption Nationals from countries in this category do not require a visa because the State of Panama has determined, unilaterally, to exempt them from this requirement.
For information on visa requirement for the Member States, please see Appendix C. General information on the Countries that need visa, is also available on the Web page:
