Definition
General type Contribution to journal/newspaper
A journal is published as a series of issues with a common name, often over many years, with each issue being numbered. General category RESEARCH
Peer‐reviewed article An article presenting new knowledge/research results, primarily to other researchers, published in a journal and subject to independent quality assessment carried out by peers (referee/review process). Article An article presenting new research results primarily to a scientific target group, published in a journal, but not subject to a referee/review process (peer review). Letter Letters (also called “communications” should not be confused with “letters to the editor” or brief descriptions of important brand‐new research results, which generally have to be published as soon as possible because they are considered very important. Comment/debate Brief comments and contributions to debates in scientific publications regarding previously published scientific articles or the like. Review
Scientific review An assessment in a scientific journal of another scientific publication (a book or other document). Brief comments of an abstract‐like nature are not included. Editorial A text in the form of an article that expresses a journal’s official attitude to a current topic. General category COMMUNICATION Article for journal
An article that targets a broad audience with a descriptive, debating, narrative presentation of a topic. Examples are articles in popular magazines.
Review in journal A review of another publication, e.g. a review of a book or scientific article.
Newspaper article Newspaper articles must be of a certain length and capable of standing alone. Feature articles fall under this heading. Letters to the editor and brief comments are not included and should in future be listed under “Contributions to newspaper debates”.

Book/anthology/dissertation/report
A book/anthology/dissertation/report is a work that is only published once or republished in new editions. The author of a monograph has written the entire text. If the author has only written part of the text, the publication should instead be registered under either contributions to an anthology or article in a journal. General category RESEARCHDoctoral dissertation A dissertation must have been defended and discussed by the faculty council the year it is registered. It is not enough that a dissertation has been submitted for assessment, accepted for defence or been defended. PhD dissertation Concludes a PhD degree programme. The dissertation must be defended and approved by an expert committee before it can be approved as a publication. Often one or more chapters of a dissertation are published independently. Scientific report A report is an academic, written work that explains one or more specific matter or area, specified before the report was written. Reports typically contain results of research work. Reports are closely associated with the institution responsible for the work in question and the reports are often published by the institution in a numbered series. Compendium/lecture notes Collections of texts written with a view to teaching a specific subject. Only compendiums and lecture notes that have been “mass produced” and are distributed to students against payment are included under this heading. The individual researcher must have carried out a certain amount of work in connection with the collection of the texts, either as the author of one or more of the contributions or as an editor (by formulating questions/assignments in connection with the texts).

A contribution to a book/anthology or report is part of a larger context where several independent contributions make up a larger body of work. A book/anthology/report differs from a journal/newspaper by generally being published only once or republished in a new, revised edition, whereas a journal is often published as a series over several years. Articles in Den store danske encyclopædi (The Large Danish Encyclopedia) or other encyclopedias that primarily target the general public are registered under communication.
