The NZ Company’s chief surveyor and second in command of the expedition, Frederick Tuckett, sailed in Will Watch. He was a staunch quaker. Just four months later he formed the committee to name the town’s principal streets. In April 1843 as directed, he planned the survey of Wairau which led to the slaughter of 22 Nelson citizens in June 1843.

On her maiden voyage, Fifeshire carried several notable settlers: John Kerr, farmer, who ploughed the first field in Nelson town, Alfred Saunders, miller. Upon leaving port the Fifeshire ran aground on Arrow Rock on 27th February and in the process breaking her back. It was four years before the remains were removed. Several small ships were constructed from her timbers but no record of them has been found. Other than the Captain’s megaphone and a chair

supposedly made from the ship nothing else remains.

Lloyds carried the wives and families of the advance party from the Whitby and the Will Watch. The joy of their arrival was sobered by the news that 65 children had died during the

voyage. Of the 56 families on board, 16 lost all of their children. Only two passengers were classed as adult males. Cases of whooping cough were allowed to board, and the disease spread quickly. Food and medication were inadequate for the large number of children. Captain William Green and his crew slept with some of the women migrants. The surgeon was incompetent. On arrival Arthur Wakefield wrote scathing reports of their conduct which tightened sailing instuctions for future migrant ships.

The Lord Auckland also made four voyages to Hobart, Tasmania, in 1844, 1846 and 1853 with convicts. On the voyage to Nelson the ship had on board 171 passengers, 42 crew, 18 sheep, 18 pigs, numerous geese, ducks and chickens for food and 95 tons of fresh water. Passengers included successful merchant Alfred Fell; surveyors Thompson and Barnicoat who surveyed the Waimea Plains and Moutere Hills. Barnicoat settled near Richmond and became a Provincial and Legislative Councillor. Charles Harley, a carpenter, built a hotel and established Nelson

Breweries. Two descendants served as mayors of Nelson

Although there were 21 deaths and seven births on the five-month voyage

passengers regarded it as a good journey and commended the Captain for his care and consideration. The Martha Ridgway’s arrival triggered the first distribution of “town acres” in the newly-surveyed settlement.
