Trading and Product News

From the Chairman

Dear Customer

Welcome to our Summer 2013 Product Guide. Improvement in the weather and the trading environment seems slow in coming, but the forecasts for both look slightly better! The winter seems to have dragged on and trading conditions have been tough. This guide shows the wide range of products stocked by Lathams. The core range is wood based sheet materials and joinery quality hardwoods and softwoods, but extends beyond that to acrylic stone surfaces, special doors and fl ooring. The company is a major supplier of decorative panels countrywide and its range is increasing all the time.

The UK Government, many major corporates and other socially aware customers place great emphasis on ensuring that timber and timber based products are legally harvested from well managed forests. The Government’s timber procurement policy makes this a contractual requirement for all timber products used on government projects. This can best be demonstrated by schemes such as the Forest Stewardship Council Standard (FSC) or the Programme of Endorsement of Forest Certifi cation (PEFC).

In addition the European Union Timber Regulation came into force in March 2013 and places an obligation on importers of wood based products into the EU to ensure that logs have been legally sourced and harvested. We have been working with our supply chain to ensure that credible evidence of legality is available, particularly from high risk areas.

We are continuing to extend our range of FSC and PEFC certifi ed hardwoods, softwoods and panel products. It is important for customers to note that claims can only be made regarding certifi ed products where third party audited Chain of Custody can be demonstrated throughout the supply chain.

We have been developing our business in Ireland and have a sales team selling our timber and panel range, as well as promoting LG HI-MACS® solid surface.

James Latham is a national distributor of Accoya wood. This is softwood modifi ed by the acetylation process to improve its properties, notably durability and stability, and it offers a 50-year guarantee against fungal attack when used above ground level. Details of the sizes that we stock are given on page 30 and our sales staff can advise on suitable fi nishes and fi xings.

I am sure that customers will fi nd this product guide useful, but more information is always available from our very knowledgeable sales staff.

The emphasis which the company places on environmental issues can be found throughout this Product and Price Guide and we encourage you to read the information on our chain-of-custody certification schemes shown on pages 6, 7 and 75. These schemes ensure that wood certified under a scheme comes from a certified forest

and that the supply chain has not been broken. Certified products are flagged by the FSC®, PEFC and third party

verified legal logos. All James Latham depots have FSC, PEFC and BM TRADA forest certification scheme’s Chain of Custody certification. Our certificate numbers are: FSC-TT-COC-1089, BMT-PEFC-007, BMT-COC-0072. In some parts of the world, timber certified as coming from well managed forests is either not available or only available in limited quantities. The company is committed to purchasing all timber from legal sources. Where the risk of corruption and illegal logging is high we seek third party audited proof that timber has been logged and traded in accordance with the laws of the country. This is described as verified legal.

Lathams were the first company to sign up to the Timber Trade Federation Responsible Purchasing Policy (RPP). The company surveys supplying mills, assesses the risk factors surrounding supply and targets our suppliers and us to improve the profile of our purchasing. This process is subject to third party audit.

We publish our commitment to the environment regularly in our literature and on our website www.lathamtimber.co.uk. A copy of our brochure, Guide to Environmental Certification Schemes, is available on request.

1. Management Structure

The company has appointed Peter Latham to be responsible for the implementation of this policy and will ensure that environmental issues relevant to the policy are discussed regularly at the highest level of management. The company will ensure that all employees associated with timber purchasing are aware of the policy and its commitments, and are given appropriate education and training to allow its full implementation.

2. Responsibility

The company recognises that it has a responsibility to the environment, customers, suppliers and staff to base its commercial activities on well-managed forests.

3. TTF Code of Conduct

The company is committed to the Timber Trade Federation Code of Conduct and applies the Environmental Code of Practice to all wood procurement activities.

4. Legality

The company is committed to purchasing all timber from legal sources and will seek evidence of compliance from suppliers that they are operating in accordance with the laws of their country. The company unreservedly condemns illegal logging practices and will keep informed of processes and changes in international legislation.

5. Endangered Species

The company will not trade in timber species prohibited under Appendix 1 of the CITES legislation and will obtain the appropriate documents for trade in all other CITES listed timber species.

6. Traceability and Supplier Monitoring

The company will perform a Risk Assessment on all Suppliers, as documented by the RPP. The Risk Assessment will seek to provide the clearest practicable information regarding the sources of raw material used in the manufacture of wood products. This information will form part of purchasing decisions. This information will be made available on request to independent verifiers.

7. Timber Certification

The company supports international efforts to improve forest management, for example, the development of credible timber certification schemes. This company recognises that the independent certification of forests and the process chain is the most useful tool in providing assurances that the timber comes from legal and well-JAMES LATHAM’S COMMITMENTS FOR THE RESPONSIBLE

PURCHASING OF TIMBER AND TIMBER PRODUCTS

EU AND UK GOVERNMENT TIMBER

PROCUREMENT POLICY

As of March 2013 it is an offence for importers (‘operators’) to place illegally harvested timber or timber products on the EU market and there is an obligation to have in place a ‘due diligence system’. People who buy or sell timber or timber products (‘traders’) must keep records for at least 5 years of operators or traders who have supplied them with timber or timber products, and to whom they have supplied.

FLEGT licenced timber, unavailable at present, is exempt from the regulation and certification schemes such as FSC or PEFC are means of demonstrating due diligence under the regulation.

James Latham plc has been working with suppliers, particularly those in high risk area, for a number of years to seek credible evidence to show legal harvesting. In many cases this involves third party verification.

The UK Government, government influenced bodies and many clients for timber and timber products place a contractual obligation on suppliers to ensure that the timber has been legally and sustainably produced. The easiest way of demonstrating this is by purchasing timber and timber products certified by FSC or PEFC. Chain of custody requirements are outlined on pages 6, 7 and 75. The government established a body called the Central Point of Expertise on Timber (CPET) to advise on whether particular sources of supply meet the government requirements. Information can be obtained from their

Density Timbers vary in density depending on their species and moisture content. The values quoted are averages at 15% but the increase caused by moisture can be estimated by adding 0.5% of the given weight for every 1% increase in moisture content.

Description The colour refers to the Heartwood of a timber, but each board may be subject to some variation and most timbers change colour when exposed to daylight.

Drying and Kilning Higher temperatures and reduced humidity found in most new buildings make it essential to condition Hardwood before manufacturing into woodwork. This is achieved by kiln drying timber, reducing the natural moisture in wood. The majority of timbers today are already kiln dried, except for those sold especially for external construction work, and commonly, sold at an average moisture content of 1212 - 15%, suitable for the most internal situations bar those with continuous central heating.

North American timbers are imported already kiln dried to a moisture content varying on average 8 - 10% reflecting the widespread use of air-conditioning and central heating in the United States.

Durability The durability of timber is based on the results of the ‘Grave Yard’ test, where pieces of Heartwood 50mm x 50mm x 0.6mm are stuck in the ground and, fully exposed to the elements, are left to rot. The timber is then classified according to the number of years taken before decay becomes obvious. The classifications are: perishable 0-5 years including all sapwood; non-durable 5-10 years; moderately durable 10-15 years; durable 15-25 years; very durable 25+ years. This is a particularly harsh test and a durable timber used in most external situations where it does not actually touch the ground, can be expected to last for some years longer.

Flat Sawn Timber cut tangentially to the annual growth rings, often called through and through.

Knots Knots give figure to wood as the grain is deflected around them and because of the shapes of hard dark tissue. They can be desirable aesthetically e.g. pippy oak.

Machining This refers to the ease of working and is classified as excellent, good, medium and difficult (where care should be taken in machining).

Moisture Movement This refers to the dimensional changes that occur when dried timber is subjected to changes in atmospheric conditions. The movement is classified as small, medium and large. For situations where varying humidities are likely to be encountered and stability of a component is important, a small movement species should be specified eg decorative wood flooring. The most recent standard for moisture content in general joinery is BSEN 942 1996 Timber & Joinery.

Paint/stain This refers to the ease of accepting a stain or paint finish and is classified as excellent, good, satisfactory and poor.

Prices on Application Prices are available from our Sales Offices. A surcharge may be levied on orders valued at £230 or less.

Quarter Sawn Cut radially from the log to give an edge vertical or straight grained appearance.

Specification The majority of imported Hardwood is in the form of Square Edged boards of random width and length. These are normally sold on the basis of 6' and up in length, and 6" and wider in width. However, Far Eastern timbers are more commonly 8' and longer, 6" and wider, and North American timbers are 6' and longer, and 4" and wider. The specification shows the average length and range,

Welcome to our Summer 2013 Product and Price Guide.

The European Union Timber Regulation (EUTR) is now in force, as members of the TTF, we have been using “Due Diligence” on our supply base for many years, we aim to help our customers with the complex certification schemes and legality issues. Our staff are all well trained in these matters.

It is ever more important to know the origins of your Timber supplies. We have developed relationships with suppliers around the world, and encouraged them to go for certification schemes.

We have a complete range of cladding in Western Red Cedar, Accoya, Larch and various Hardwoods to order.

We have launched our engineered range of products, Paul Leach is heading up our team, he is well known in the Hardwood trade, and has great knowledge and expertise in this product range. Our present range includes Oak, Sapele, and Redwood with both clear face and finger jointed options.

We now also stock stair components within the engineered range.

I must mention Accoya, this product is proving to be very successful for us, solving problems for our customers, guaranteed stability and durability, great for exterior joinery, and now available as a decking product.

We continue to recognise the importance of quality products for the cabinet making industry, and continue to work with our supply partners to bring in the very best grades of walnut, cherry, white oak and maple. There are often opportunities to save waste and money by using specification to match your requirement, short lengths or cut to size widths, please talk to your Latham depot about this opportunity. The future trading pattern still looks uncertain and difficult, but we are committed to hold the stocks our customers require, and continue to strive to improve our service.

FORESTS

A forest which is responsibly managed can produce timber indefinitely. By producing and supplying certified timbers, we can help to ensure that the timber supply base can be maintained for the future. These timbers will guarantee timber for future generations.

OUR WORLD

The natural forest is a delicate ecosystem, which stores carbon and

contributes to recycling of water, maintaining climate stability and protecting biodiversity. Conversion of natural forest to other uses is problematic and a

matter of concern because such activities contribute to CO2 emission when the

forest is burned. Contrary to this, wood which is based on sustainable forest management is CO2 neutral.

PEOPLE

A forest which is responsibly managed also ensures the rights of local and indigenous people. Free, prior and informed consent are essential elements to ensure that different stakeholder interests are taken care of. Respecting the lives and cultures of local and indigenous peoples ensures that their way of life, sometimes developed over centuries, can be maintained.

WILDLIFE

By safeguarding forest areas so that the wildlife is maintained, good forest management ensures that the forest habitat, for both animals and plants, is protected. Species currently endangered, such as the western lowland gorilla or forest elephant, can continue to be afforded a habitat where they can survive and, hopefully, thrive in the future.

ECOSYSTEM

Good forest management ensures that the delicate forest ecosystem is maintained and thus the level of biodiversity is sustained.

CUSTOMER AWARENESS

As the public becomes more aware of the importance of protecting our environments they will inevitably demand more and more timber from

American Black Walnut grading varies from other North American species. For full details regarding specifications, please see the AHEC website www.ahec-europe.org or contact John May at john.may@lathams.co.uk

The NHLA grades have been altered for this species because of availability and nature of the timber growth (around 1% of the standing forest resource). The FAS lumber grade allows a 5 inch minimum width and 6 foot minimum length. When steamed, the sapwood, which is not considered a defect, will turn a darker colour to assist blending in the finishing process and is admitted without limit.

The FAS grade includes a range of boards that yield from 83 1/3% (10/12 ths) to 100% clear-wood cuttings over the entire surface of the board. The clear

cuttings must be a minimum size of 3" wide by 7' long or 4" wide by 5' long. The number of these cuttings permitted depends on the size of the board with most boards permitting one to two. The minimum width and length will vary,

depending on species and whether the board is green or kiln dried. Both faces of the board must meet the minimum

requirement for FAS.

This grade is nearly always shipped with FAS. The better face must meet all FAS requirements while the poor face must meet all the requirements of the Number 1 Common grade, thus ensuring the buyer with at least one FAS face. Often export shipments are assembled with an 80-20 mix, 80% being the percentage of FAS boards and 20% being the percentage of the F1F boards. These percentages are strictly left to individual buyer and seller agreement.

FAS

FAS One Face (F1F)

This grade is virtually the same as F1F except for the minimum board size required. Selects allow boards 4" and wider and 6' and longer in length. The Selects grade is generally associated with the northern regions of the USA and is also shipped in combination with the FAS grade.

Often export shipments of the upper grades are simply referred to as FAS. The conventional business practice for American hardwoods is to ship these upper grades in some combination. Working closely with the supplier will enable the buyer to be sure that the expected quality will be received. Whether FAS is combined with F1F (Face And Better) or Selects (Sel And Better) every board in the shipment must have a minimum of one FAS face.

Prime grade: This grade has evolved from the NHLA grade of FAS for the export market. It is square edged and

GRADING OF AMERICAN TIMBER

(15)

13

GRADING OF AMERICAN TIMBER

GRADING OF AMERICAN TIMBER

The NHLA grading rules do not allow the following characteristics in the clear cuttings for all grades and they are therefore considered defects.

HEARTWOOD and SAPWOOD

Heartwood is the mature wood, which is often darker, extending from the sapwood to the pith. Sapwood is the lighter coloured

wood growing from inside the bark to the heartwood.

MINERAL STREAKS

Streaks of colour ranging from olive to blackish-brown, which typically follow the grain pattern.

BARK POCKET

A bark-filled distortion in the grain pattern.

DECAY OR ROT

The breaking down of the wood substance by fungi. The dis-colouration of the sapwood indicates the initial evidence of decay.

SPLIT

A lengthwise separation of the wood created as the wood dries. Shake is a separation between the annual growth rings.

WORM HOLES

Holes in the wood ranging in size from 1/16" to over 1/4".

BURL

A swirl or twist in the grain of the wood that does not contain a knot.

GLASSWORM

Random mineral like tracts. Usually associated with ash.

BIRD PECKS

Small blemishes in the grain pattern resulting from birds pecking that sometimes contain ingrown bark. An exception

to the rule is hickory and elm.

UNSOUND KNOT

A circular area that once formed the base of a branch or twig and has a pith centre (in some cases the wood may be missing).

STICKER STAIN

Stain that is typically grey in colour occurring from stickers used to season lumber.

PITH

The small soft core at the structural centre of the tree.

GUM STREAKS

Mineral-like streaks of colour naturally occurring only in cherry.

STICKER MARK

The mark left on the board from a seasoning sticker, which can be removed in the surfacing planing process.

CHECK

A lengthwise opening on the face of the board resulting from rapid or faulty drying.

SOUND KNOT

A knot solid across its face, which shows no indication of decay.

WANE

Bark or the lack of wood caused by the round nature of the tree or log.

GRUB HOLES

Holes larger than 1/4".

The following show characteristics that occur in US hardwoods. Some are inherent to certain species and others are generic to all. These characteristics either occur naturally in the lumber or as a result of the drying process.

The NHLA grading rules allow the following characteristics in the clear cutting percentages for all grades and they are therefore not considered defects.
