CHICAGO’S FIRST CATHOLIC PARISH ESTABLISHEDIN 1833

THE PAULIST FATHERSSERVINGOURPARISHSINCE OCTOBER 12, 1903.

OLD ST. MARY’S CHURCH

OUR PARISH MISSION

Founded in 1833, Old St. Mary’s Parish is the first Catholic parish in the

Chicago area. Guided for more than a century by the vision of the

Paulist Fathers, we are a diverse and welcoming community dedicated to

serving the spiritual needs of the Loop, South Loop and the

greater Chicago area.

As a unified Church and School community, Old St. Mary’s Parish

promotes the mission of the Paulist Fathers to welcome those

who have been away from the church, to build bridges of respect and

collaboration with people of diverse backgrounds and

religions, and to promote justice and healing in our society.

Annual Catholic Appeal

Announcement Weekend

January 30-31

In light of the current coronavirus pandemic, our primary

concern is the spiritual and physical health and welfare of

the faithful. While the financial circumstances of many

fami-lies in our parish are uncertain, for those who are able we

ask for your support of our Church.

The Annual Catholic Appeal will launch next weekend. Our

goal this year is $59,965. Once we reach that goal, the

parish receives a rebate check for anything above the goal.

The Annual Catholic Appeal offers a wonderful opportunity to

answer Jesus’ call to “Come, follow me...and bring hope to

the world.”

Your financial support for the work of our parish, our

archdiocese, and the Church throughout the world is one

way to express gratitude for God’s many gifts to us.

There are a number of ways in which you can make a

donation.

f. Call 312.534.7959 to make a donation using Stock,

93 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to the critical

work of schools, parishes, agencies and ministries of the

Archdiocese of Chicago.

Pastor’s White Board

Catholic Schools Week, and the Gift of the Old St. Mary’s Catholic School

Thank you to our founding parishioners and founding school parent parishioners of our 2002 reboot of Old St. Mary’s Church and the ensuing Old St. Mary’s Catholic School, as well as all of you who continue as committed parishioners and parents making us thrive – even during a pandemic! Really – THANK YOU!

And kids as well, and teens (in the school and on to other schools), and young adults who are graduates – THANK YOU – for your energy, enthusiasm, creativity, challenge, joy, and faithfulness in all its diversity and spectrum of talent, ability, legacy and potential. God Bless you all!

I grew up in a St. Mary’s grade school, too. And unlike some comedians and some tell-all books, my experience with Catholic Schools was affirming and faith-filled. My parents sent all seven of us to Catholic School. Each of us participated in the full range of Catholic School sports and activities that were around in the 1970’s and 80’s – so very different from Catholic Schools of today.

It is amazing all that Catholic Schools offer their students today, taking on our culture’s embrace of sports, arts, and academic programs, activities, and competitions. I respect that in the academic world of today parents have quite a challenge balancing their work and home lives with the activities and academic studies of their children. So many choices and demands for time and presence. Again, thank you for your efforts – especially having to deal with Covid-19 on top of all that. At times there is controversy around Catholic Schools. Some Catholic parishes and schools compete for funding or compete for faith direction. But at their best, every Catholic School is an extension of the Parish’s Education Ministry. And from their conception Catholic Schools have sought to make lives better for the families they serve.

Our parish’s onetime historical location at Wabash and Madison inspired the first Catholic School in Chicago in 1844. Originally a boy’s school it expanded to include girls. As the Cathedral parish of the diocese and with Bishop Quarter’s interest, it inspired other Catholic parishes in their education efforts, and Catholic schools at every level of education in the diocese. Prior to the Chicago Fire in 1871 just about every parish had a school.

Built with voluntary contributions, Chicago Catholic schools sought to preserve culture and transmit faith while educating the children of immigrants for American citizenship. While nativists decried the existence of a separate Catholic school system and undermined efforts to obtain a share of the state's educational fund at one point, Catholic Schools forged ahead to make their own way. In the last 160 years there have been many changes in how Catholic Schools are run and funded, and how they relate to one or more parishes. Catholic Schools continued to evolve and create opportunities for many.

We are blessed with all of you who have made OSM the Blue-Ribbon School it is today. Your ongoing interest helps the school grow and thrive in this ever-changing world. Key to that, and my final set of thank you’s, go to our principal, Ms. Diana Smith, all of our teachers and staff, as well as all the volunteers, consultants, and substitutes, FSA and School Board Committees who make our school what it is today. God Bless you all!

Again, to everyone, THANK YOU VERY MUCH! Happy Catholic Schools week! Fr. Brad Schoeberle, CSP
