Pioneering:

Objective: The Patrol will need to learn how to tie a tripod

Correct knots and tying technique must be used or a 30 second penalty will be assessed for each improperly tied knot and improper lashing.

The three patrols that tie properly and use the correct knots will be awarded prizes.

Reflector Oven Build

The patrols will not need to build their own reflector oven for the event, but here is how to build and use one if your patrols chose to do this as a patrol activity.

How to Cook With a Reflector Oven

By Lore Postman

https://boyslife.org/outdoors/outdoorarticles/12765/great-reflector-oven-recipes/

Dutch ovens might be as essential to Scout cooking as the gooey-delicious cobblers they create, but you’d have to be crazy to lug one of these 20-pound lead weights on a long backpacking trip.

Fear not. It’s still possible to get homemade baked goodies — including pizza, breaded chicken, blueberry pie and fresh-from-the-oven chocolate chip cookies — even when you’re camping miles away from the troop trailer. Typically weighing just a pound or two, a reflector oven is an effective alternative. The oven looks like a square box cut diagonally in half with a shelf in the middle to hold the food. Unassembled and stored in a pouch, it’s about the size of a one-subject notebook.

Complete ovens sell for about $60 online, where you can also find plans for making ovens of different shapes and sizes from scratch using some lightweight metal flashing, a few rods and a handful of rod pins.

The radiant energy from a roaring campfire travels into the oven, hits the oven’s angled top and bottom and bounces toward the food on the shelf, where the food absorbs the energy and bakes. The oven works best set a few inches from a fire.

“It can be challenging to make sure the oven stays level and that it’s close enough to the fire so the food in the back gets cooked but not so close that the food in the front gets burned,” says Eagle Scout Michael Milazzo from Troop 1570 in Herndon, Va. “Reflector ovens are unconventional, but they’re fun to use, fun to get other

campers’ reactions, too, and it’s really great to have them available as an option.” There is a right time and place for everything, including reflector ovens.

“They are great to use on a cold day or when you’re making a giant fire for a campfire ceremony,” says Brandon Timbrook, a Life Scout with Troop 1570. “All you need is a roaring fire and you’re ready to bake.”

By their very nature, reflector ovens aren’t for every camp-out. A ban on ground fires will keep it packed away. Charcoal briquettes and propane gas won’t work with it either. Reflector ovens need the radiant heat of strong flames from a wood fire.

Cast iron, if left to its own devices, want to be nothing more than a pile of iron oxide. To make the troop's cast iron last forever, you must take care of it. Here is some tips how to do just that.

https://www.allrecipes.com/article/how-to-clean-a-dutch-oven/ Here's What You'll Need to Clean a Cast Iron Dutch Oven:

Cooking oil Paper towels Water Dish scrubber

Plastic spatula (optional)

How to Clean a Cast Iron Dutch Oven

Remember if you're using a new cast iron Dutch oven for the first time, you must season it before you use it. To do this you'll need to coat it in cooking oil and place it in the oven for half an hour at 350 degrees. Reapply the oil, and lower the temperature to about 200 degrees, and put it in the oven for another hour. After an hour is up, leave it in the oven overnight and rub it with a final coat of oil in the morning. Your Dutch oven should have a black, glasslike finish once it's properly seasoned. Once you've seasoned your cast iron Dutch oven and put it to use, you'll need to know how to clean it.

Wipe Down Your Dutch Oven: Cast iron Dutch ovens require regular maintenance. After each use, you should

wipe it down with a dry paper towel. You can also use a moist paper towel to wipe out any sticky residue.

Bring Water to a Boil: Next, fill the Dutch oven with water so that any food residue that might be burned on is

covered. Bring the water to a boil and then remove from heat and allow the water to loosen the residue.

Scrub the Interior: Once the water has cooled, use a dish scrubber to scrub any residue. You may also use a

plastic spatula to remove stubborn bits of food. Don't use dish soap, as this will break down the seasoning on your cast iron. After you've removed all the food, give it a rinse.

Dry Your Dutch Oven: Use dry paper towels to wipe down your Dutch oven.

Give It a New Coat of Oil: Pour a small amount of cooking oil into the Dutch oven and rub it in using a paper

towel. Wipe the excess away with a clean paper towel.

The method of cleaning cast iron is something of tradition passed down to generations along with the cookware itself. Some cooks and cast iron diehards dare not let theirs near water, much less soap of any sort, and letting one rust may indeed fall into the book of unpardonable sins for some Southerners.

But fear not: During a visit to the Lodge factory in Tennessee, we learned the proper way to restore rusty cast iron from the experts themselves. A few simple steps at home can restore rusted cast iron cookware to cook-ready condition!

Cast iron, if left to its own devices, want to be nothing more than a pile of iron Oxide. To make the troop's cast iron last forever, you must take care of it. Here is some tips how to do just that.

https://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-restore-a-rusty-cast-iron-skillet-cleaning-lessons-from-the-kitchn-203086 How To Restore a Rusty Cast Iron Skillet

Regardless of the extent of rust, there are options beyond throwing out rusted cast iron. For severe rust that covers most of the cookware surface, take the piece to a machine shop to have it sandblasted and restored to raw cast iron, then season immediately. You can start with step four here, or use the following tutorial. Read: How To Season a Cast Iron Skillet

Most commonly, neglect or moisture results in what’s called “profile rusting,” which can be seen and felt on the cookware. Thankfully, profile rusting is easily removed at home in an afternoon. Follow the steps in this post and you’ll be all set.

Remove all the rust: Use fine steel wool to remove rust from affected areas. Scour the skillet until the area returns to raw cast iron.

Vegetable oil (or cooking oil of choice) Aluminum foil

Oven

Instructions

Remove all the rust: Use fine steel wool to remove rust from affected areas. Scour the skillet until the area returns to raw cast iron.

Wash the skillet thoroughly: Wash the cast iron with warm water and mild dish soap. Scrub with bristle brush, gentle scouring pad, or mesh sponge if needed.

Dry the skillet: Thoroughly dry the cast iron immediately with a clean dish towel or paper towels.

Cover the pan with a coating of oil: Apply a small amount of vegetable oil (or cooking oil of choice) to the entire piece.

Don’t forget the bottom and handle: When oiling, don’t forget the bottom and handle. Use only a small amount to avoid a sticky surface.

Place the pan in the oven: Place the cast iron upside down on the top rack of your oven. Place a sheet of aluminum foil or a foil-lined baking sheet on the bottom rack to catch any oil drips. Heat the cast iron for one hour at 350°F.

Let the pan cool before using: Turn off heat, let cast iron cool, then get back to cooking!

While at camp the troops may consider holding an election for those Scouts who are eligible for induction into the Order of the Arrow. For over 100 years, the Order of the Arrow (OA) has recognized Scouts and Scouters who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives. This recognition provides encouragement for others to live these ideals as well. Arrowmen are known for maintaining camping traditions and spirit, promoting year-round and long term resident camping, and providing cheerful service to others. OA service, activities, adventures, and training for youth and adults are models of quality leadership development and programming that enrich and help to extend Scouting to America's youth.

The Mission and Purpose of the Order of the Arrow

The Order of the Arrow was founded in 1915 to serve a useful purpose: to cause the Scout Oath and Law to spring into action in all parts of the nation. To this day, the Order is dedicated to this high purpose.

History of the Order

The Order of the Arrow has a rich history spanning 100 years, from its beginnings at a Boy Scout summer camp to its present role as a part of the Scouting program.

Organization & Structure

The Order of the Arrow has over 150,000 members nationwide. Although the Order of the Arrow is a thing of the spirit, there are several layers of organization, each with its own role.

Membership Requirements

Be a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America.

Have experienced 15 nights of Scout camping while registered with a troop, crew, or ship within the two years immediately prior to the election. The 15 nights must include one, but no more than one, long-term camp consisting of at least five consecutive nights of overnight camping, approved and under the auspices and standards of the Boy Scouts of America. Only five nights of the long-term camp may be credited toward the 15-night camping requirement; the balance of the camping (10 nights) must be overnight, weekend, or other short-term camps of, at most, three nights each. Ship nights may be counted as camping for Sea Scouts.

At the time of their election, youth must be under the age of 21, and hold one of the following ranks corresponding to the type unit in which they are being considered for election: Scouts BSA First Class rank, the Venturing Discovery rank, or the Sea Scout Ordinary rank or higher, and following approval by the Scoutmaster, Crew Advisor or Sea Scout Skipper, be elected by the youth members of their unit.

Adults (age 21 or older) who meet the camping requirements may be selected following nomination to and approval by the lodge adult selection committee.
