Accounting
Prerequisites for Admission
There are no prerequisites for the Certificate Program in Accounting, but a bachelor’s degree is strongly recommended. We also recommend you have a solid academic foundation in the basic areas of financial accounting and managerial accounting. If you need a deeper background in these areas, we recommend taking suggested foundation courses. See the website for details.
CPA and CMA Licensing
Many UC Berkeley Extension accounting courses count toward the educational requirements to sit for the CPA Examination and the CMA Examination. Courses may also fulfill continuing education requirements for biennial license renewal.

Certificate Program in Accounting graduate Kyle Cameron says that the breadth of courses offered at UC Berkeley Extension empowers him and others to pursue nearly any field in accounting—from auditing to taxation to controllership. “I can really do anything with the education that I received here,” he says. Having received a job offer a month before completing his certificate, Cameron is currently assistant controller at a midsized company in San Leandro, Calif.
Curriculum Requirements
The curriculum comprises 8 required courses for a total of 24 semester units. Candidates must pay a nonrefundable certificate registration fee.
All coursework must be completed within five years of registering for the certificate. However, requirements may be updated based on new developments in the field of study; we recommend completing the curriculum in a timely fashion. You can enroll in courses and register for the certificate at extension.berkeley.edu/cert/account.html.
Completion Requirements
You must take all courses for a letter grade. To receive the certificate, you must maintain an overall minimum 2.5 grade point average (GPA), with a grade of C or better in each course. A Certificate With Distinction will be awarded to those who complete the certificate with a GPA of 3.7 or higher.
