How your card works

Your card helps you budget by ensuring every transaction is checked with the bank before it is agreed.

Please note, this means your card cannot be used at merchants who are unable to connect to the bank’s systems for these checks. Most merchants can, but examples of those who cannot include unattended petrol pumps and some readers on trains, ships or planes. This also means your card is not compatible with the technology needed to make contactless payments.

Using your card abroad

Your Visa Debit card is accepted at over 29 million retail outlets and 1 million cash machines all over the world.

Please note, a charge may apply to use your card abroad – please see page 4 for details.

Purchase Protection

If you pay for goods or services with your Visa Debit card and they fail to arrive; or are damaged when you receive them we could help you get your money back.

This may include companies that have gone into administration before you have received the goods or services.

If you are unable to agree resolution with the retailer then contact your branch for help.

Safety and Security

Criminals continually look for new ways to obtain your card or card details including your PIN. Whether banking online or entering your PIN in a public place, you should always be vigilant. We operate a fraud checking service and, if we think someone is trying to use your card fraudulently, we may contact you by phone or SMS or ask the retailer to contact us, to confirm that you are making the purchase.

We will never ask you for sensitive information such as your PIN or the 3 digit number on the reverse of your card.
