Enhancing Lives - Exceptional Customer Care

From the Desk of

Jolene Roberts

Dear Team Members, In my last Informer article I spoke about our Hillcrest

Strategic Initiatives. These are our 'game plan' for helping the organization realize our Vision:

Become a National Leader Providing Integrated Services for Aging Adults We know several facts about aging adults:

More people are living longer. Nebraska, especially in urban areas, has a steady growth of aging adults. Families are not 'intact' as they used to be. Therefore, aging adults don't live with their families or they aren't supported by their families like they were even 30+ years ago.

Dementia is a leading cause of health-related suffering for people over age 85. The Medicare system is complicated -how does an aging adult get the right care at the right time at the right place? These facts are why Hillcrest created our Vision. And in this market Hillcrest is the ONLY company that had the foresight to understand that as people age they need help 'navigating' their health care, especially when the family is not close or a person outlives his/her family. Hence, Hillcrest has created a system of services to help an aging adult when they need it.

One of our initiatives is referred to as Initiative #4 - Implement a system that provides the right care at the right time at the right place. We are reexamining all the ways in which a customer enters our system and accesses needed services throughout our system. The challenging factor with this initiative is that we must comply with very diverse government regulations - regulations that were not created for a 'system' but were created for a product such as home health care regulations or skilled nursing regulations. Most of our services are government regulated, so it makes the creating of 'integrated services' complicated.

But complication has not stopped Hillcrest! I have the pleasure of working with a group of intercompany team members including:

Facility Based: Angie Wallace, Jennifer Janovich, Lisa Summers, Vanessa Wright, Cindy Klein

Rehab Agency: Reagan Muller HCS: Jade Hamner, Dana Penning Home Office: Doug Walters

Hillcrest's CEO Jolene Roberts gets her flu shot. Now, it's your turn!

As we welcome the change of season, we also experience the arrival of this year's flu season. Last year the US experienced 147,216 cases of the flu with the Omaha area documenting 319 cases. This year in Australia they have experienced more than twice the average cases of flu, leading many health care organizations to predict we will have an unusually high number of cases in the U.S. The best way to protect you and our guests from this illness is to be immunized before the virus shows up in our community. Although the flu vaccine is not always 100 percent effective in preventing you from getting the flu, it will decrease the severity and length of time you might be sick if contracted.

Typically the flu season runs from November until March, and therefore, the optimal time to receive your vaccination is in October. The Hillcrest team will be out in the organization to give you the free flu vaccine to protect you, your co-workers and most importantly the individuals we care for in all our service lines. Please do your part in protecting everyone and get your free flu shot this month!

A flu vaccine clinic will be held at the Team Member Development Office on October 27 from 1:30-3 p.m. for Bellevue campus team members.

Hillcrest Caring Companions A Dream Come True

Hillcrest Caring Companions' Latrishla Hollingsworth spent a special evening out on the town with Shadow Lake resident Tony Pokorny, his wife and their family. The

Dreamweaver Foundation arranged for them to have a nice dinner out in Omaha followed by entertainment at a local music spot. Tony is a former trumpet player who traveled the world, and his wish was to have a fun night of dinner and entertainment, plus a nice ride around town. Partnerships and special moments like this help Hillcrest fulfill our mission of Enhancing the Lives of Aging Adults.

Shout-out to Colleen O'Neill, Chaplain for Hillcrest Hospice Care, for helping arrange this dream-come-true opportunity for Tony. She even stopped by the dinner that evening to meet his family.

Hillcrest Country Estates Cottages

Recognizing Awesome Team Members

Hillcrest Country Estates Cottage #70 recently received kudos from an elder's daughter: "The team in Cottage 70 is wonderful. They have so many activities that they actually do and not just list on the schedule. They put scarves and jewelry on my mom and fix her hair and paint her nails and treat her with so much respect. Even now with her mental state she is being treated with dignity and respect. My family is so pleased.

I am not going to mention specific names because I can honestly say everyone there deserves mention. My sibs and I come at various times and interact with different team members and we all have commented on the respectful, compassionate care our mother receives.

Thank you so much and big kudos to Cottage 70." Way to go, Cottage #70 team members!

Fall Hay Bale Challenge

Hillcrest Country Estates is right in the midst of their Fall Hay Bale Challenge, and the teams are working hard to be first place. Each Cottage received a pre-determined budget for decorations, and the judging for the best decorations is slated for October 26. The grand prize winner will receive a $100 gift card to use for Christmas decorations for their Cottage. See below for some of the finished work.

Please help me in congratulating three of our nurse techs who took the next step to accomplish a task that will allow them to advance themselves and provide our residents with a higher level of care. It is my pleasure to announce that Corrie Chaddha, Maura Romero and Jocelyn O'Connor have achieved the certification of Medication Aide here at Hillcrest Shadow Lake.
