Upcoming World Celebration Dates next week... Wednesday October 28, 2015 Czech Independence Day

Commemorates the founding of Czechoslovakia in 1918 with the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy at the end of World War I. After the Czechs and Slovaks formed their separate nations in 1992, the Czechs still celebrate this day as their National Day.

It was terrific to see such a strong turnout of parents for this past week’s Parent-Teacher Conferences, and for our faculty to have the opportunity to share with you features of your children’s learning so far this school year and to set growth targets for the coming quarter. We apologize if there were disruptions to the schedule that resulted in delays to scheduled times and do encourage you to please contact your children’s teachers or the relevant school office if you would like an opportunity to talk further. At conference times I often reflect on the universal practice of parents, of their young infant children who, in spite of an apparent lack of progress in the ability to learn to walk and talk, nevertheless continue on full of enthusiasm, ultimately encouraging them on unto success. I do encourage you never to lose this optimism and enthusiasm for your child’s learning, and to maintain the gentle patience and belief that will see them through the struggles that they may sometimes encounter.

On Wednesday we celebrated UN Day here at school, and in response to the current refuge crisis

in Europe, this year we focused our attention on the many positive influences and contributions that immigrants and refugees have on the economies and societies into which they may flee. The day started with a colorful parade of nations, which was followed by a wonderful UN Day concert, a series of thought

provoking learning activities, and concluding with a delectable international lunch. I wish to congratulate all of the performers, and to extend a huge vote of thanks to the IST parent community who put on such a delicious and generous

meal for our entire community. It really was a wonderful day, and one on which the heart of our community was revealed

in the best possible way.

It was a delight to see so many of our community members dressed in colorful national costume for UN Day, although the goose bumps that were also on display as a result of the sudden cold shift in the weather did remind us all that winter will soon be upon us, and with it seasonal influenza viruses. In an effort to limit the transfer of germs we are once again

setting up hand sanitizing stations at each of our main building entrances and we ask that all parents please reinforce

their use, as well as the use of tissues and frequent hand washing.

Allied with this effort to improve general hygiene is a reminder to all families that nurses and doctors from the Tianjin SOS Clinic will be in school next Tuesday and Wednesday to administer the annual seasonal influenza vaccinations. Please feel free to come in and hold the hands of terrified tots and teens.

Finally, I wish to inform all parents that the school has just received a new shipment of PE

uniforms with all sizes now in stock. Please feel free to come to one of the main offices

to purchase a uniform if you need one. I also wish to remind you that the school has a

selection of warm tracksuits, hoodies, and winter ‘beanie’ hats to keep your children

(and you!) warm over the coming winter. Warm regards

Steve Moody Director

IST celebrated PINK Day on October 16 to demonstrate support of and solidarity with the patients

of breast cancer in Tianjin in a meaningful way.

It was wonderful to see the community (students, staff and parents) turn out in great numbers

dressed in pink, and some sporting pink wristbands. There were pink posters, banners and

balloons displayed throughout the school campus. The donation drives and the bake sale to raise

funds for some Tianjin women to be able to have breast screening done were very successful. The

elementary student council and the secondary “Stand up to Cancer” action group joined forces to

collect about RMB 7000 for this noble cause!!

One of the highlights of the day and a very appropriate and visual show of solidarity with the breast

cancer patients was a group photo of all the pink clad IST students, staff and parents arranged in

the shape of a pink ribbon. The pink ribbon is the global symbol of breast cancer awareness.

The International School of Tianjin is once again proud to announce its scholarship program

for students in their final two years of school. The purpose of the scholarship program at IST is

twofold: first, it provides an outstanding educational opportunity each year for a limited number

of current IST students of exceptional talent who are experiencing clearly-demonstrated financial

need; and second, it provides that same opportunity to a limited number of non-IST students of

exceptional talent in order to enrich the overall quality of both our student population and our

IB Diploma Programme. This latter group may or may not have financial need.

Description and Value of Scholarships

The IST scholarships are awarded for a period of up to two years to students about to enter 11th

grade. The following scholarships are offered:

Full scholarships: equivalent to the cost of all tuition and capital fees for grades 11 and 12.

Tuition scholarships: equivalent to the cost of tuition only for grades 11 and 12.

Bursaries: equivalent to half the cost of tuition fees for grades 11 and 12.

IST scholarship students will benefit from an outstanding education in their final two years of

school. Students who successfully complete the two-year programme will be awarded the IST

High School Diploma. IST is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, and students have

the opportunity to earn the full IB Diploma, which is highly regarded by competitive universities

worldwide as an entrance qualification.

Interested candidates should contact the school office for an application package or call the

school at: 22-2859-2001

The closing date for applications is Friday, February 5th, 2016, with the scholarship examinations

scheduled to be held on Saturday, February 27th, 2016.

D*E*A*R

What  is  D*E*A*R?    These  letters  stand  for  “Drop  Everything  and

Read.”  This  is  one  time  when  kids  are  encouraged  to  drop  things  and

then  pick  up  a  book!  At  IST,  “DEAR  Time”  is  announced  over  the

loudspeaker  and  students  settle  down  to  read  independently  for  20

minutes.  The  goal  is  to  encourage  people  to  make  reading  part  of

their  everyday  routine.  As  reported  back  from  Ms.  Bodha,  whose  DP

Biology  class  read  content-‐related  excerpts  from  Genome:  The

Autobiography  of  a  Species  by  Matt  Ridely,  ”This  was  an  amazing

opportunity.  One  student  asked  to  borrow  the  book!”  Reading  is

fun(damental).

International Schools Library Week (ISLW)

This  past  week  every  student  celebrated  a  love  of  reading  through

D*E*A*R*.  Our  wonderful  library  space  was  enjoyed  as  well  when

students  participated  in  a  variety  of  Makerspace  activities  during

lunch.  The  mystery  reader  ‘drop  ins’  that  happened  in  the

Elementary  school  throughout  the  week  provided  a  wonderful

opportunity  for  students  to  meet  different  teachers  and  find  out

about  their  favourite  books.    The  launch  of  the  Panda  Book  shortlists

was  a  great  success;  many  of  the  books  have  been  checked  out.  This

year,  elementary  students  must  read  5  books  or  more  in  a  category

to  vote  for  their  top  choice.  The  voting  party  will  be  a  pizza  party  held

this  spring.    Please  stop  by  the  library  to  find  out  more  and  to  pick  up

a  Panda  Book  Award  reading  list  for  your  child.    Finally,  it  was

wonderful  to  see  so  many  parents  and  students  excited  about  books

at  the  Beijing  Book  Fair  held  in  the  library  this  week.
