Important changes to your Checking account coming August 3rd
Dear Member,
As part of the integration of HealthOne into New England Federal Credit Union, your existing HOCU Checking account will be replaced on August 3rd with NEFCU’s SimplySmarter CheckingTM, a modern Checking product with impressive benefits and low – or no – monthly fees.
The changes to your Checking account are part of a larger integration of HealthOne with the computer systems at NEFCU. You will receive a separate notification in the mail with details about the conversion process, but please be advised that there will be numerous service disruptions over the weekend of August 1st and 2nd as we migrate HOCU Checking, Savings, and Loan accounts, along with all related applications and data, onto the core computer system at NEFCU.
Welcome to SimplySmarter Checking
Your new Checking account, which is identical to what we offer our members in Vermont, comes with all of the benefits of a traditional Checking account, plus convenient electronic access and online tools that offer powerful ways to manage your money. The attached brochure summarizes all of SimplySmarter Checking’s great benefits. In the meantime, here’s what you need to know about the transition of your HealthOne Checking account:
1. Your Checking account number will change, however your HealthOne checks will still be valid, and any electronic deposit arrangements you may have established will be retained.
2. If you have an ATM Card associated with your Checking account, it will be replaced with a Debit Card. Withdrawal limits will be $500 per day. Purchase limits will be increased to $5,000 per day.
You will receive your new card through the mail in the last week of July. Please follow the instructions to activate your new card. Your existing card will not work after August 2nd. 3. HOCU Online will be discontinued and replaced with NEFCUOnline effective August 3rd. To
continue using online banking services, you will need to register for NEFCUOnline on or after August 3rd by going to healthonecu.com and clicking on “Sign Up” at the bottom of the
NEFCUOnline login box. You will receive a new member number in the mail in July, which you will need to complete the registration process.
4. HOCU’s Bill Pay service will terminate and be replaced by NEFCU’s BillPay. You will need to re- register once you have signed up on NEFCUOnline. Bill Pay users will have received a separate mailing with full instructions.
5. Your account will be associated with the surcharge-free SUM®, Falcon and CO-OPsm ATM networks, along with the PLUS and NYCE ATM networks. We will no longer participate in shared ATM deposits.
6. The Overdraft Advance feature of your current Checking account will be replaced by NEFCU’s Courtesy Pay, with a different set of terms and conditions, which are described in the Courtesy Pay brochure and Pricing Schedule accompanying this letter. In sum:
• Courtesy Pay will cover your paper checks, bill payments, and/or electronic payments (ACH).
One-time Debit Card purchases will be covered for members who have opted in for that service.
Overdraft coverage at the teller line and for ATM transactions will no longer be available.
• The Courtesy Pay Fee (for paid NSF items) will be $19, and the Returned Item Fee will be $24.
(Please refer to the enclosed Pricing Schedule for full details).

How to Avoid Returned Checks and Other Non-Sufficient
Funds (NSF) Incidents
COURTESY PAY GUIDELINESAs a service to members in good standing and to help you avoid the fees that may be charged by third parties for “bad” checks, we may, at our sole discretion, approve your reasonable overdrafts up to a dollar amount (inclusive of fees). A fee will be charged for every non-sufficient fund (NSF) item regardless of whether we pay it or return it.
NEFCU IS NOT OBLIGATED TO COVER ANY ITEM PRESENTED FOR PAYMENT IF YOUR ACCOUNT DOES NOT CONTAIN SUFFICIENT COLLECTED AND/OR AVAILABLE FUNDS. FURTHERMORE, SERVICE CHARGES ASSESSED AGAINST A CHECK OR CHECKS, OR ANY OTHER REQUEST FOR FUNDS MADE UPON YOUR ACCOUNT, DOES NOT OBLIGATE US TO PAY SAID REQUEST FOR FUNDS. NOR DOES IT OBLIGATE US TO PROVIDE PRIOR WRITTEN NOTICE OF OUR DECISION TO REFUSE PAYMENT.
It is the obligation of the Credit Union to operate in accordance with all applicable safety and soundness standards. If you issue a check or make a transaction for funds exceeding what is available in your account, you are responsible to the Credit Union for the amount of any overdraft and applicable fees immediately, without notice or demand from the Credit Union, in accordance with the terms of your account.

Courtesy Pay

It can happen to anyone – returned (or “bounced”) checks and other types of payments originating from your checking account that are denied due to non-sufficient funds.
Bouncing a check cannot only be embarrassing, it can also be a hassle. A bounced check may result in non-sufficient funds (NSF) fee for you, and from the person or business that you had intended to pay.
Depending on your financial institution, NSF incidents can be costly, as you will usually be charged a penalty fee when they occur.
NEFCU provides many different ways to help you avoid NSF incidents. We offer free NEFCUOnline so you can check your account balance every day in “real time”, review payments made, view checks you’ve written, and transfer funds between your accounts. We also offer automatic Account Alerts that you set up that will notify you of certain types of activity in your account, including when your account balance drops below a level that you specify or when a debit transaction occurs.
Using our Mobile Banking service, you can keep track of your account activity and make instant transfers from your “smart” phone or other mobile device when you’re out shopping or away from home. You can also use your telephone to check your balances by using our automated Accountline system, or by speaking to a TeleBranch representative.
With all of these tools at your disposal, you have multiple layers of protection to help prevent you from ever experiencing an NSF incident. Nevertheless, NSFs do occur, and when they do, we offer additional protection and options to help ensure that your payments go through as you intended.
Speak to a Member Service Representative to set up NEFCUOnline and other services mentioned above.
Avoiding Non-Sufficient
Funds (NSF) Incidents
Courtesy Pay is another service we provide at NEFCU to help you avoid returned checks and other types of denied payments due to non-sufficient funds.
Courtesy Pay may be used to help cover check and ACH transactions, BillPay items originated from NEFCUOnline, as well as transactions that you make using your debit card.
With Courtesy Pay, NEFCU may pay the transaction for you even if you do not have sufficient funds in your account.* For this service, we will charge you an
“Overdraft Fee” of $19 per transaction item, which will be deducted from your account. You do not have to sign up for Courtesy Pay to work for your paper checks, BillPay or electronic (ACH) items you originated from your checking account. However, you do have to
“Opt-In” if you want the protection of Courtesy Pay to apply to your everyday debit card transactions. Note:
At NEFCU, we do NOT extend Courtesy Pay to ATM or non-checking account transactions.
*We reserve the right to pay or not pay any item at our discretion when there is not enough money in your account to cover the transaction. We may consider your relationship with the Credit Union, account history, financial behavior, and/or other factors when determining whether to pay an item (overdraft) or return the item for non-sufficient funds (NSF).
How does Courtesy Pay work?
You do not have to sign up for Courtesy Pay to work for your paper checks, bill payments or electronic payments (ACH) originating from your checking account. However, you do have to “Opt-In” if you want the protection of Courtesy Pay to apply to your everyday debit card transactions.
Does Courtesy Pay work with Debit Card transactions?
Since many of our members today use their debit cards when they go shopping instead of writing paper checks, today’s “bounced” checks often take the form of denied debit card transactions. Should this happen to you while you are at the checkout line with a basket full of groceries, it could be very inconvenient. So, we also offer Courtesy Pay for debit card transactions.
Due to government regulations intended to stop the abuse of this service, you must sign up (or “Opt-In”) for Courtesy Pay to apply to debit card transactions.
Will Courtesy Pay apply to my savings and money market (Power) accounts?
No. If you currently have automatic payments linked to any of your savings accounts and wish to have Courtesy Pay coverage, we suggest you change these automatic payments to your checking account.
What is my Courtesy Pay limit?
The Courtesy Pay limits we offer to our members range from $500-$3,500 on personal checking accounts only and may vary depending on your account status and financial history. If you have multiple checking accounts, your Courtesy Pay limit will be applied cumulatively.
Note: Limits are subject to change daily without notification. Therefore, just because we may pay your transaction presented without sufficient funds today, does not guarantee that we will always pay your transactions when you do not have enough money in your account to cover the payment.
How do I know I am overdrawn?
We will mail you a letter to notify you any time your account is overdrawn, but we encourage you to keep good account records and to use NEFCUOnline, Account Alerts, Mobile Banking or Accountline to keep track of your balances in “real time.”
How quickly do I have to deposit funds to cover an overdraft?
You should make every attempt to bring your account to a positive balance within 24 hours. If you are not able to do so, you will receive a letter from us informing you of the situation and your options.
Can I “Opt-Out” of Courtesy Pay?
You can contact us to “Opt-Out” of Courtesy Pay if you do not want us to pay checks or other electronic transactions that won’t clear due to non-sufficient funds. If you choose to “Opt-Out” of Courtesy Pay then your check or other transactions will be returned when you do not have enough money in your account to cover the payment and you will be charged the standard “Return Fee” of
$24 per item. In addition to the Return Fee you may be charged a penalty fee and/or interest from the recipient of your returned items.
Note: If you do not “Opt-In” to allow us to authorize debit card transactions against non-sufficient funds, these transactions will be denied at point of purchase unless you have established other plans described below to cover these payments. There is no “Return Fee”
assessed for debit card NSFs, but your transaction will be denied. Please know your “Opt-In” and/or “Opt-Out” decision can be revoked or reinstated by you or the Credit Union at any time.
Are there other ways for me to prevent NSF fees?
Yes there are! At NEFCU, you can “link” your checking account to certain types of deposit or loan accounts.
If you have established this link, then money will automatically be transferred from one of your identified accounts into your checking account to cover the payment. Speak to a NEFCU Member Service Representative for additional details and related fees.
