CLERKS CORNER

Announcement Requests: Please send your announcements to: clerks@jasda.org or via text message to (646) 872-4674 by 10pm Thursday nights in order for them to be announced on Sabbath. For bulletin announcements which are due in by 10pm Mondays, please email Sis. J. Daley at jdaley@jasda.org

Clerks for February:

Announcements: Charlene Gibbs-King & Jodi Dias

Membership Requests: It is our joy to welcome you into our fellowship as church family.

If you desire to be part of our church family this can be done in one of three ways:

1. Baptism – The Church believes in baptism by immersion and accepts into membership those who have been baptized in this manner.

“He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.” (Mark 16:16) Those who acknowledge their lost state as sinners, sincerely repent of their sins and experience conversion may, after proper

instruction, be accepted as candidates for baptism & Church membership. “Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you.” “I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.” 2 Cor. 6:17-18

2. Profession of Faith – A committed Christian coming from another Christian

communion who has already been baptized by immersion and has now accepted the fundamental beliefs and practice of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

3. Membership Transfer – Members should apply for their letters of transfer to the clerk of the church with which the member desires to unite (Jamaica Church). The clerk will then send the request to the clerk of the church you previously attended.

When the request is answered positively, it will be presented to the church board and the church for vote.

Facilities/Room Bookings: Effective immediately, all ministry meetings, luncheons, use of the kitchen and rooms for events, need to be reserved/done through the Clerical Ministry Office. The head clerk needs to be notified 2 weeks prior to the event by email, text or a phone call. Your co-operation would be greatly appreciated.

Note: A use of Facility Fee applies to personal/private individual or group events.

Courtesy Parking: It is with joy that we endeavor to make your worship experience

spirit-filled and stress free. Please attend to your vehicles immediately at the end of the

church service if you are blocking anyone.

The Savior’s coming will be literal, personal, visible, and worldwide. When He returns, the righteous dead will be resurrected, and together with the righteous living will be glorified and taken to heaven, but the unrighteous will die. The almost complete fulfillment of most lines of prophecy, together with the present condition of the world, indicates that Christ’s coming is imminent. In an effort to address some of the questions regarding our faith and other issues that youth may be facing, we will be having a special AY program on Feb 22

nd

at 4pm.

In order to be effective, we need your questions! Please jot them down, do not include your names as this is anonymous, then turn them in to the AY Council.

Some members are: Jordan, Audrey, Candice, Tanice, Dejean, Kemoy and Juvon. This will be an open and honest forum that, with God’s guidance, will prayerfully provide some answers that will bridge the gap.

We are all blessed with gifts and talents from God. I would love to get to know your right brain a little better! Would you mind sharing your creative passion with me?

It may not be something you are doing right now, but if you have expertise or pieces of work in a particular area, like music, art, sculpture, crocheting, knitting, painting, poetry, and a host of other talents, please fill out the form and drop it in the offering plate or give it directly to Sis Audrey Stewart.

Don’t be shy. Just think, you might be an inspiration to others and God does

not want you to hide your light under a bushel!

BIBLICAL PARENTING:

WHEN KIDS SAY, “THAT’S NOT FAIR!”

Competition between siblings is often demonstrated by the statement, “That’s not fair” or “What about him?” Competition comes from comparison and often creates distance in

relationships between brothers and sisters as they try to put each other down in order to be first or best.

Comparison between siblings often stems from a faulty belief that fair means equal. So, if my little brother gets a privilege then I should get one too.” Or, “When I was younger you were

much harder on me than you are with my little sister.” Kids need to learn an important fact about life and parents usually have opportunities to teach it. Fair doesn’t mean equal. In fact, equality often becomes the enemy of fairness.

THE FAIRNESS CONFUSION

Fairness treats all kids according to their needs, which usually aren’t equal. Each child needs to feel loved and cared for. Every child needs to work on particular issues. Focus on your children as individuals and reward them according to their needs.

Sometimes parents contribute to the competition and comparison in their children by trying to treat their children equally. If William gets new shoes, we buy shoes for his sister too. If she gets new markers then we buy some for William as well.

Children quickly get this idea and use the inequalities of life to try to get what they want.

It doesn’t take long to realize that you can’t reasonably treat your children the same. You must treat them differently because they have unique needs, personalities, and strengths. A younger child may stay up later than an older brother because she’s still taking naps and doesn’t need to go to bed as early as he does.

That’s not unfair. It’s treating children according to their needs.

When children compare themselves to each other they say they want equality, but that’s not really true. What each child really wants is to feel special. When you treat them uniquely, and focus on each child individually, you’ll be surprised how much the comparison and competition are reduced in your family.

VISION

Every believer spiritually matured, active in mission and ready for the return of Jesus Christ

MISSION

Jamaica Seventh-day Adventist Church is to proclaim to all peoples in the Jamaica- Queens communities the everlasting gospel of Jesus Christ, our Creator, Redeemer, Lord and King, through education, health and family life; and to faithfully unite with His church in service and be nurtured by His Word in preparation for His soon return.

Most people think of Rosa Parks as the first person to refuse to give up their seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. There were actually several women who came before her; one of whom was Claudette

Colvin.

It was March 2, 1955, when the fifteen-year-old schoolgirl refused to move to the back of the bus, nine months before Rosa Parks’ stand that launched the Montgomery bus boycott.

Claudette had been studying Black leaders like Harriet Tubman in her segregated school, those conversations had led to discussions around the current day Jim Crow laws they were all experiencing. When the bus driver ordered Claudette to get up, she refused, “It felt like Sojourner Truth was on one side pushing me down, and Harriet Tubman was on the other side of me pushing me down. I couldn't get up."

Claudette Colvin’s stand didn’t stop there….why has Claudette’s story been

largely forgotten? At the time, the NAACP and other Black organizations felt Rosa

Parks made a better icon for the movement than a teenager. As an adult with the

right look, Rosa Parks was also the secretary of the NAACP, and was both well-

known and respected – people would associate her with the middle class and that

would attract support for the cause. But the struggle to end segregation was often

fought by young people, more than half of which were women.
