Together we begin our "Encounter in the Springtime"!
We finally are ready to enter the season of Lent. This is roughly some 40 days of preparation for the feast of the Res- urrection.
The time of Lent has a deep history in our Catholic way of life.
It has evolved from considerable rigidity in the 4th century.
It has developed from time of severe fasting (only one meal a day), to a little more relaxed in the 9th century, yet it was still focused on physical suffering.
Then after the Vatican II Council (1965), the emphasis was on the more spiritual aspects of preparation for Easter.
So now, we have a more balanced understanding: prayer, fast- ing & almsgiving. We are guided in these three areas by our own conscience and the guidance of the Church. Note the guidelines on page 2 for the Lenten Season.
Let's share this time of special growth, a spiritual spring- time... We share our Lenten Program of Encounter with God's Mercy which begins the end of March.
Let us take this blessed time of 40 days to be closer to mass and the Eucharist. It is a time of fidelity to prayer.
Let us begin...
With Love, Fr. Leo
