Concept of Ambient Intelligence

Eli Zelkha- Palo Alto Ventures- circa 2000

Better Known as "Artificial Intelligence"

Colloquially- Know Yourself

The ability of a computer to record, analyze and predict your habits

From recorded past choices

To current movements

To future learned Artificial Intelligence-

Alexa- "Tom, I sense your body temperature is 96.5 degrees , so I'll turn up the thermostat"

(Alexa- Turn up the heat.)

Tom, Do you want me to turn up the heat?

TO: My sensors note there is no motion in the house and it's 11:00 PM. That means everyone is asleep and I'll turn off all the lights, set the heat /cool on 65 degrees, tell the coffee pot to grind coffee and make six cups of coffee at 6:00 AM and open the blinds at 6:15 AM.

4 . Promoted by companies wanting to sell a product (It's FREE....FREE, FREE, FREE !!)

6.4 Billion to 13 Billion Smart devices now in homes today....

…...50 Billion before 2030 (UL Laboratories)

Established in 1894 as the Underwriters' Electrical Bureau . Now known as as Underwriters Laboratories, it is approved to perform safety testing on devices by the U.S. federal agency, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)

ISSUES______________

Developmental

Lack of integration Lack of standards for reliability/consistency

No performance criteria (your experience may differ)

Poor design and manufacture, (especially non- western)

Software Few to no security safeguards against hacking

Few to no software patches for improvements

Few to no service availability for help

Little to no integration with other software platforms

Buyer Beware- What you see is what you get!

(If it doesn't do what you want it to, you can't change it)

Privacy

Artificial Intelligence

Always learning

Learns by:

• Mistakes

• Habits and Routines

• Requires a feedback loop to improve

• Smart Devices record and memorize

everything you let it.

• There is none

Your system is compromised as soon as you turn it on.

People can listen and watch without you knowing

BIG Brother of 1984 is listening

Consent You gave consent when you connected.

Your consent was total and absolute 24/7/365

Your consent extends to your family members and anyone within range of the audio or video of

your house.

Ownership All data is owned by the recorder

Your data theoretically is protected, but:

There are few safeguards against hacking you or the recorder

You have no way of knowing, unless told after the fact.

Smart Houses

Quid Pro Quo:

You want Efficiency and Convenience,

We want to harvest your data.... forever.

Hypothetical:

1. Looking into the refrigerator. "Honey, we need eggs and bread for tomorrow." Amazon delivers it in an hour and charges it to your account .

2. Text Message from Domino's: "It's 6 pm Monday- can we send you your usual large pizza with cheese and peperoni on a thin crust?"

Artificial Intelligence in Smart Houses will:

 Make life more convenient and efficient

 Make you more dependent on the technology

 Reduce your level of control to that norm of your socio- economic status.
