Obtaining a Library Card & PIN Number
If you’ve uploaded photo in advance:
collect card from Main Counter, Library, Level 2 OR use photo booth on Level 2
& then collect card from Main Counter:
- you will need your BUCS username & password
- also need these to access university email & library e-resources
- if no BUCS account: visit Computing Services helpdesk, Level 2
Need PIN number to renew, reserve & check loans:
- should have received PIN via your university email account - can get PIN/reminder via library homepage
Copying, Printing and Scanning
• Self-service machines & need library card
• Can print from a PC & collect printing
• Add credit via credit-loading machine:

Colour A4 20p (double-sided 36p) Scanning Free
• Staff available to help: 9-5 Mon-Fri
• Copy, print & scan within the law:
1 article/5% of journal issue 1 chapter/5% of book
Studying at university might be a bit different...
• More independent studying expected:
Don’t just refer to your recommended reading lists!
Need to study even if not set specific work e.g. exams, seminars…
Need to read library’s journal articles as well as books
• Will need to manage your own time to greater extent:
- the library can help you make best use of your time by helping you
find high quality information

What are journals …& why use them?
• Similar to magazines i.e. regularly published but they feature current academic research
• More cutting edge than text books
• If you reference journal articles:
potentially higher marks!
• Journals provided in print or/and online:

• Practice your delivery in a library workroom

Some good advice
• Don’t let anyone else use your Library Card
• Avoid fines! i.e.
- bring books back on time & in good condition - renew books 1 day+ before due back
- set up loan reminders
• Mobile phones:
- may use in group study areas
• Eating & drinking: only allowed in L2 foyer
- the area before you enter the turnstiles
- bottled water is fine anywhere within the Library
