Dear parishioners:

With students heading back to school, I found myself looking in Catholic House- hold Blessings and Prayers for a back- to-school blessing to share with you. As I searched, I came across a bonus blessing! It seems, that since the Middle Ages, the Assumption, Mary’s feast day, has been a day to bless fields, gardens, and orchards. A special day for all the gardeners in our parish. Who knew?

I am happy to share both blessings and the thought that you might want to buy a copy of Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers. It is a great re- source for your home or a wonderful gift for a fam- ily you love! It contains prayers for seasons, for family members and so much more! Here are two examples!

Blessing for times of new beginnings When a child is ready to begin school, a parent may bless the child by placing a hand on the child’s head and saying:

May the Lord bless you and keep you. Amen. May the Lord’s face shine upon you and be gracious to you. Amen.

May the Lord look upon you with kindness, and give you peace. Amen.

Assumption Day Blessing Gathering in the garden we pray. All-powerful God,

we appeal to your tender care,

that even as you temper the winds and rains to nurture the fruits of the earth,

you will also send upon them the gentle shower of your blessing.

Fill the hearts of your people with gratitude, that from the earth’s fertility,

the hungry may be filled with good things

and the poor and needy proclaim the glory of your name.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Blessed Feast Day! Fr. John

Dear Parishioners…

I would like to take this time to let all of you know that I will be retiring at the end of this month. It truly has been an honor and a privilege to minister to you and to work with you for over 33 years. When I first started working at Seven Holy Founders, I was only 31 years old. Now I am turning 65, and with my health being what it is, I think that this is a good decision.

All of our day-to-day interactions will certainly be missed. All of you have become a part of my family. Everyone of you means so much to me! You will be forever be in my thoughts and prayers.

Please welcome Mrs. Jennifer Neptune, who will be taking over my position. She is a wonderful young woman whom I know will be very easy to work with, and make this transition an easy one. Again, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. With love and prayers. Gail Duvall

Fill the Van

Our St. Vincent de Paul Society is participating in the FILL THE VAN promotion for the Affton Christian Food Pantry (ACFP).

The ACFP serves families that reside in the 63123 zip code and is supported by its fifteen member churches, one of which is SHF. Operating out of the St. George Parish Center, the Pantry serves over 250 families every two weeks.

During the summer months donations of food are usually small, but the demand is greater because the children cannot participate in their school lunch pro- grams. The Pantry particularly needs donations of pasta, pasta sauce, beef stew, chili, tuna, mac and cheese, peanut butter, cereal, meal supplements, fruit, and toilet paper.

The ACFP Van will be parked in the front of SHF Church on Saturday, August 28th from 3-6 PM and Sunday, August 29th from 8-12 AM. You will able to drop off your donation before Mass. Mone-

“Faith and Racial Justice” Program This Fall

As a person of faith, are you looking to challenge your thinking about racism, its causes, and its im- pact, while discerning practical ways to address it? If so, the Justice Seekers ministry at Our Lady of Providence Parish has a program for you. This Fall, on Tuesday evenings from August 31-October 19, we will sponsor weekly sessions on “Faith and Ra- cial Justice” on Zoom from 7:00-9:00 P.M. There will also be a morning retreat on Saturday, August 28, and an immersion experience between sessions 6 and 7 (online or in-person TBD). Cost of the pro- gram is $25, plus the cost of three books

(approx.$35). Scholarships are available. For more information or to register for the program, contact Jill Orr, 314-805-0487, orrmjm@charter.net.

CELEBRATION OF ST PHILIP BENIZI FEAST DAY

Next weekend we are celebrating the feast day of St. Philip Benizi, the father of the Order of the Servants of Mary. When the Servites were starving they prayed and a miracle occurred. Two baskets of bread were left on their doorstep. Next weekend the mem- bers of the Order of Secular Servites of Mary will have St. Philip Benizi prayer cards on the back tables of church as a reminder that God provides for us.

A Worldwide Marriage Encounter Experience is like the end of a summer holiday – it’s full of freshness, new beginnings, hope, and the start of another sea- son. We are excited to announce that our next IN-PERSON Encounter in the St. Louis, Missouri metropolitan area will be held the weekend of Sep- tember 24-26, 2021, at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel in St. Peters, Missouri.

We will have in place all the needed precautions to provide a safe environment for participants. For more information or to apply, go to wwme.org, or call Terry & Eric Engholm at 314-649-7317.
