Who is responsible for your backups?
To most people, backups are something that just happens once a week, they change a tape and make sure a log file says “backup completed successfully”. Unfortunately this doesn’t guarantee that you can recover a specific file from that backup – a backup is only as good as the data you can restore from it.
How far back in time can you recover data?
Most small sites have about a month’s worth of data and larger sites have a rotating six-month backup solution. There is always an element of uncertainty regarding how far back in time you can recover data – why take a chance?
How much data do you backup?
Data is growing at an exponential rate; many sites are failing to keep pace and continue running out-dated storage solutions or taking only partial backups. One key reason is that many sites simply cannot afford the larger, costly tape-based storage systems.
What do you pay a year for your backup solution?
Although the average backup solution is relatively cheap to
purchase, the actual cost in time, maintenance,
consumables and user input is often more than initially assumed.
How can you provide evidence of a structured backup and show its working?
The standard backup solution generates a popup box or a log file to say that it has either completed or failed, with a failure error code. In the majority of cases this check will have to be undertaken manually.

The ScoMIS Remote Backup Solution (powered by Attix)
What is it?
It is a cost-effective, fully managed, reliable and automated backup solution. It utilises high speed broadband links to backup data securely over the internet from one place to another.
What are the benefits?
Automation - An intelligent, fully-automated backup of date eliminating the risk of human error and hardware failures associated with tape-based systems.
Notification - Alert emails to notify you of any backup failure or if your accout exceeds its storage limit. Also full logging enables ScoMIS to manage the service and identify and resolve any backup failures.
File Integrity - The solution safely and securely backs up open files and databases. This level of support is crucial to providing critical data protection within a single backup and recovery application.
Security - It uses industry standard 448 bit encryption and in short this means that all data is stored, transmitted or accessed online using Attix is protected by ‘BankLevel Plus’ security.
Flexibility - It is simple to increase the size of backups or number of file servers, workstations and laptops being backed up.
Disaster recovery - Data is stored in a number of off-site secure sites so that in the event of a disaster such as fire, theft or hardware failure, your files can still be retrieved.

We will decommission your existing backup solution and install the Attix software on all the priority machines, i.e. your Curriculum Server/main Admin PC.
We will then perform a full system backup – this forms your base from which all additional backups are incremented.
What this means is all future backups are only files that have changed, thus creating small, quick backups (depending on network data size).
As this is a fully managed service, all backups are monitored by us giving you peace of mind. If there are any backup failures, you will be notified by email whilst we will fix any issues as soon as possible.
Restoring data couldn’t be easier. With a friendly user interface, Attix provides instant access for up to six months worth of backups (longer if required) giving you total control of your data when you want it back!
• No more remembering to change tapes!
• No more formatting tapes!
• No more time spent trying to decipher logs!
• No more time spent worrying whether you have a full
backup or not!
• No more hassle having to learn new software
whenever your tape drive is replaced!

Is it reliable?
Yes. It is an Enterprise class backup solution that uses a variety of methods to safeguard your data from harm. The service is also fully managed by ScoMIS.
My data will be flying around the Internet – is it secure?
Your data is compressed and encrypted with ‘bank grade+’ algorithms to ensure it cannot be tampered with in any way.
What’s wrong with using my existing tape drive?
There are many reasons to choose the Attix remote backup system over the traditional tape system – speed, reliability, remote location (in case of theft/fire etc), ability to test restore, simplified management, long term data storage – need we continue!
Can I back up other machines?
Yes. The Attix solution is scalable – more servers and PCs/laptops can be added easily along with other options for dedicated servers, e.g. Microsoft Exchange.
How will it save me time?
Backups run overnight and are fully automated – there is no need to get users off the system. Once the software is installed, it needs no intervention. Restoring is easy and there is no need to change tapes to find files – a simple process guides you through!
