Why do I need additional life insurance?

Life insurance helps you to protect your family and your hard-earned assets if you are no longer here to take care of them. Without enough life insurance your family may not be able to pay their expenses.

The payment from life insurance can help protect your family’s financial future by helping them pay expenses like:

• Funeral costs (the average is $10,000)1

• Final expenses, such as income tax

• Outstanding debts and bill payments

• Child care and post-secondary education costs

• Replacing your lost income and work-related health benefits

• Mortgage payments.

Your family has greater control when financial options are available to them.

I’m single so why do I need life insurance?

Life insurance can help your parents or siblings cover unexpected costs, such as your bills, debt and the cost of your funeral, and help reduce stress.

It can also provide some financial security for family members.

How much life insurance do I need?

You may have life insurance under your voluntary group benefit plan or from elsewhere. But what about your family’s future financial needs? Complete the worksheet on the following page to figure out how much coverage you may really need.

2

My worksheet

1. Estimate of the cost of final expenses (most funerals cost roughly $10,000).1 2. How much would you need to pay off

loans and debts (e.g. mortgage, credit cards, car loans, etc.)?

1. How much will your family need annually to maintain their current lifestyle (on average, 60 - 70 per cent of your income is needed)?2

2. How long do you think your family will need to rely on this income (estimate the number of years until your spouse retires)?

3. If applicable, how much will be required for your children’s future education (assuming a total of $60,000 per child)?3

1. What is the total value of your savings and investments (e.g. mutual funds, RRSPs, GICs, and other investments)?

2. How much life insurance do you already have?

How much is enough?

Having $100,000 of coverage may seem like enough. But think of it

this way: a $100,000 benefit only replaces a $50,000 salary for two

years. How long would that last your family? When it runs out, how

would their lifestyle have to change?

$0.88 – regardless of how many children you cover!

How to calculate your premium

Example: female, non-smoker, age 44

1. How much coverage do you need? $50,000

2. How many units is that? $50,000 / $25,000 = 2 units

3. Find your rate in the table above $2.70

4. Units X your rate = your monthly premium 2 units X $2.70 = $5.40 Life insurance is available at affordable group rates based on your age, gender and whether or not you smoke.

• Find the appropriate rate in the chart below. The rates shown are in units of $25,000 of coverage.

• Choose the amount of coverage you want for yourself, your spouse and your children.

• Calculate your monthly premium.

The tables below will walk you through the process, step by step.

Rates are reviewed every year, may change, and will increase as you move into the next age band. Premiums may be subject to applicable provincial tax.

** Rate is per $12,500 for this age band.

How much coverage can I get?

You can receive affordable group rates on Optional Life Insurance! With proof of good health, both you and your spouse can get up to $500,000 of coverage, in units of $25,000, by completing both the A.T.A. Group Life + and Optional AD&D Enrolment Form and the Statement of Health Form.

Can I get affordable coverage for my

children too?

Money can never replace a child but it can reduce some stress by allowing you to take time off work for an extended bereavement leave. You can buy $20,000 of life insurance for each of your children in units of $5,000 and we don’t ask for their health information. You only pay one price, no matter how many children you have.

How do I apply?

Applying for coverage or coverage for your children?

Simply download and complete both The Alberta Teachers’ Association Group Life + and Optional AD&D Enrolment Form as well as the Statement of Health form and return it to Sun Life Financial at the address listed on each form (you can put both forms in one envelope and mail to the same location).

Remember to enrol no later than November 21, 2013.

When will my coverage start?

If you applied for coverage that requires health information, Sun Life will inform you and your plan administrator if the coverage is approved, and when the coverage starts.

Please note: If you add coverage for your spouse or children, that coverage will have its own start date.

(4)

Is the lump-sum payment considered

taxable income?

No – the lump-sum payment is tax free!

Can I get life insurance another way?

Yes. However, by choosing coverage through your group benefits plan, you can often get coverage for less than it would cost to buy on your own.

What happens if I’m in an accident?

Accidents happen, but there is something you can do. Consider adding Optional Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance to your life insurance coverage. If you (or your spouse) or (a covered family member) happen(s) to suffer an accidental death or an accidental loss of limbs, sight, hearing or speech, Optional AD&D Insurance can provide you or your family with financial help. In the case of an accidental death, Optional AD&D Insurance will be paid in addition to the Optional Life Insurance coverage that you have purchased.

Get Optional AD&D Insurance for only $1.00 per unit of $25,000 up to a maximum of $500,000.

Get Optional AD&D insurance for your dependent child(ren) for only $0.60 per unit of $5,000 up to a maximum of $20,000.

What if I can’t work to pay for the coverage?

You’ll continue to be covered while you’re on total disability under your group plan and we’ll waive your payments for that period of time. This does not apply to your spouse or dependent children. If you have any questions contact Capital Estate Planning Corp. at 1-800-661-8755.

Can I keep this coverage?

If you no longer qualify for associate or lifetime membership, you and your spouse may maintain up to $1,000,000 of Optional Life Insurance coverage with Sun Life by calling Capital Estate Planning Corp. at 1-800-661-8755 within 31 days of the date your group coverage ends. Your answers to certain questions regarding your health will determine your eligibility to keep some or all of your optional life coverage.

How is this different than my

mortgage insurance?

The insurance on your mortgage (creditor insurance) ensures that the financial institution that you borrowed money from receives payment of any outstanding mortgage balance in the event of your death. Life insurance provides a lump-sum payment to your beneficiaries, not the financial institution.

4 Relevant to the time of application. The claim must be approved by Sun Life Financial.

5 In the past, if you applied for Optional Life Insurance through Sun Life and were declined, you are eligible to re-apply for coverage.

The payment is made directly to the named

beneficiary when an insured person dies – and

it’s tax free.
