The Most Holy Trinity

A Note From

Our Pastor

NEW PRIESTS

Last week Archbishop Vigneron ordained three men to the priesthood. The ordinations took place at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament.

Each year when new priests are ordained we are reminded of the importance of the gift of priesthood God gives to His Church. The church is always in need of good shepherds who will give their lives in faithful service to God and His people. We should all thank God for these new priests and pray that God will bless their ministry among us for many years to come.

Our new priests are: Reverend Eugene Dudek Reverend Joseph Voiland Reverend Zaid Badros Chabaan

MEMORIAL DAY

This weekend we celebrate MEMORIAL DAY and in the midst of our celebrations, let’s remember all those who have served our nation and especially those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

Have a happy and safe Memorial holiday. Msgr. Tom Rice

The Great Commissioning

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. In the gospel Jesus gives the, "Great Commission," go and make disciples of all nations, teaching them to observe all I have commanded you.

So we are called to make disciples of all nations. How do we do that? For most of us we will never leave the United States. Maybe we will go to Canada, or Mexico for vacation, but not to live in Africa, Asia, or China. I think the "nations" that Jesus is talking about is the "nations" of our families, our friends, our co-workers. And let me tell you, for some of my family and friends you would be hard pressed to make disciples of them.

Discipleship needs to have a great leader, this is why we have Jesus as our greatest leader and our teacher. But to make disciples we need to be a great leader also, not just as a great secular leader but as a great spiritual leader as well. When we think of ourselves as a spiritual leader, we have to ask ourselves, are we living the life God has intended us to live? Are we the spiritual leaders of His domestic church? Jesus is not asking us to give up our families, our friends and our co-workers. He is asking us to bring all of these with us on our journey to the kingdom. He is asking us to live a life of grace and forgiveness. When we reach out to others with compassion, mercy and

forgiveness, we bring forth what Jesus commanded us to do of loving our neighbors as ourselves. When we reach out with a joy of being one of God's children, we attract people to be like us. Our Archbishop has asked us to be a "band of joyful missionary disciples." If we can do this His church will grow and the love of God would spread like this pandemic has, only in a good way. I pray you all get

infected with His love and joy! God bless, Deacon Don

Join the Knights on May 30th

for the Rosary

The Church traditionally dedicates the month of May to The Blessed Virgin Mary, and there is no better way to honor her and to ask for her intercession than to offer our ‘crown’ of prayers in the Rosary.

As part of the Knights of Columbus’s “5th Sunday” tradition, all are invited to join the men of our Council #8659 to publicly honor Mary by praying the Rosary at St. Thomas More this Sunday, May 30th at 2:00 pm. We will reflect on the significance of Mary, the Rosary, and the Glorious Mysteries, during these turbulent times. We will also pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet.

EVANGELIZATION

Remembering Fr. Dan Jones

by John Hannigan

It is fitting on this weekend when we remember people who died in the service of our country, to also remember a man who had served his Church, and was my friend. Fr. Daniel Jones went to the Lord early last Sunday morning after a battle with lymphoma.

Many of you will remember Fr. Dan from when he served St. Thomas More parish as our weekend assistant priest. Fr. Dan was an associate professor of theology at Sacred Heart Major Seminary and taught many courses. He loved teaching Christology and about the early Church Fathers, especially St. Augustine. He wrote a book with the daunting title, Christus Sacerdos in the Preaching of St. Augustine; Christ and Christian Identity. It was very

scholarly: the first page was half footnotes and half of those were in Greek! Yet in his homilies, Fr. Dan would share good insights from Augustine and teach us who Jesus is.

Fr. Dan, a late vocation, was ordained at 43. He belonged to Servants of the Word lay brotherhood in Ann Arbor, was a junior high teacher in Ypsilanti for years, and worked as a foreign missionary. Fr. Dan had encouraged me to speak out about the errors in The Da Vinci Code when the movie came out. He established an Oratory, a prayer community of priests in Detroit at a parish around the corner from my office. Fr. Dan’s last pastoral assignment was at St. John Fisher Chapel University parish in Auburn Hills.

I think one of the most fascinating things about Fr. Dan was his fondness for Mother Teresa and her Sisters of Charity. He loved sharing stories about her life and wisdom. While studying in Rome, Fr. Dan said Mass for the Sisters, and was a confessor and offered spiritual direction and retreats for their communities in Sicily, India and America. He assisted on ‘the cause’ for Mother Teresa’s canonization in 2016. That year, he addressed a United Nations

conference on Mother Teresa as a peacemaker, focusing on her meditation:

The fruit of silence is prayer. The fruit of prayer is faith. The fruit of faith is love. The fruit of love is service. The fruit of service is peace.

Fr. Dan Jones was a prayerful man of faith, who loved his life of service, and now is at peace.

Eternal rest, grant unto him O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. Amen.

Stewardship Thoughts

The Most Holy Trinity

A Trinitarian theme — three persons in one God — connects today’s Scripture readings. In the First Reading from the Book of Deuteronomy, Moses proclaims that God’s unique greatness should inspire people to follow His commandments. According to St. Paul’s Letter to the Roman community, the Spirit invites us to become adopted children and heirs through Christ — Roman society held adopted children in high esteem. In a powerful

evangelization message from St. Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus commissions His Apostles: Go, therefore, and make

disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Do we, as faithful stewards,

realize our baptismal call, our gift of discipleship from the Lord? Moved by the Holy Trinity, do we witness our

discipleship in a spirit of evangelization by welcoming home our brothers and sisters who have left the faith, and those who do not know Christ? Please read Archbishop Allen Vigneron’s pastoral letter, Unleash the Gospel,
