Updating Your Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Skills to SQL

Server 2008

Elements of this syllabus are subject to change.

This three-day instructor-led course provides students with the knowledge and skills to update their skills in the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 data management software to SQL Server 2008.

Audience

This course is intended for developers and database administrators who are experienced with using SQL Server 2005 and want to update their skills to SQL Server 2008.

At Course Completion

After completing this course, students will be able to:  Describe the new features of SQL Server 2008.  Manage SQL Server 2008.

 Optimize SQL Server 2008.  Secure a SQL Server 2008 database.  Develop databases by using SQL Server 2008.

 Create and maintain highly available SQL Server 2008 databases.  Create and use a SQL Server 2008 data warehouse.

 Use SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services.  Use SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services.

Prerequisites

Before attending this course, students must have experience with developing or administering databases in SQL Server 2005.

Module 1: An Introduction to SQL Server 2008

This module describes the background to SQL Server 2008 and the range of business scenarios that the various editions of SQL Server 2008 support. It also describes how to prepare your existing environment for a new installation or upgrade to SQL Server 2008.

Module 2: SQL Server 2008 Manageability Enhancements

This module explains how tocreate a Central Management Server to centralize the management of the servers in an organization. It also explains how to create, apply, and test policies to simplify the management of SQL Server instances.

This module explains the key enhancements to extract, load, and transform (ETL) operations that SQL Server 2008 provides. It also explains how to work with partitioned tables and how to optimize data storage in your SQL Server 2008 databases.
