A WORD FROM OUR PARISH NURSES MINISTRY

Asthma is a condition of the lungs that causes the air- ways to the lungs to swell, become narrow, and produce mucus. These factors make breathing difficult and may trigger coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. 22 million Americans are affected by asthma. Anyone can develop asthma during their lifetime. Asthma is not curable but the symptoms can be controlled.

The most common symptoms of asthma include: cough- ing, shortness of breath, wheezing, and chest tightness or pain. Your chances of developing asthma may be related to having a family member with asthma, being overweight, smoking, exposure to second hand smoke, having an allergic condition such as dermatitis or allergic rhinitis, exposure to pollution and exhaust fumes.

Exposure to chemicals such as those used in farming, manufacturing and hairdressing may contribute to the developing asthma.

Triggers are things that cause your asthma symptoms to occur. Triggers can include: exercise, weather conditions such as increased humidity, cold air, tobacco smoke, pollen, dust mites, strong odors (perfumes, smoke, cleaning products) and certain medications.

Asthma is managed by working together with your doctor to determine a diagnosis through testing and create a treatment plan enabling you to minimize your symptoms. There are various medications to assist in the management of asthma from oral medications, rescue and daily used inhalers to aerosol type treatments. If you suspect you may have asthma, talk with your doctor to confirm the diagnosis and create a treatment plan that will work for you.

SEPTEMBER NOVENA

This novena will begin on the feast day of St Matthew Monday September 20.

The gospel of St. Matthew paints a picture of Jesus as the promised Son of God who would rule as king forever. He is the Messiah, the fulfillment of all that the Jewish people had been waiting for. The good news of Jesus should be proclaimed to all the world. The novena will then end on the feast of the archangels St. Michael, St. Raphael and St. Gabriel. Each one played a very important role in salvation history. God gave Michael the responsibility of guarding us as God's children. Gabriel was given the task to announce to Mary that she would be the Mother of God. Raphael is known for his healing powers. The world needs healing in many ways both physically and spiritually. So we invoke all 3 angles to come to our aid.

The opening prayer will be:

O Glorious Saint Matthew, in your Gospel you portray Jesus as the longed-for Messiah who fulfilled the Prophets of the Old Covenant and as the new Lawgiver who founded a Church of the New Covenant. Obtain for us the grace to see Jesus living in his Church and to f ollow his teachings in our lives on earth so that we may live forever with him in heaven. Amen

Pray the rosary for the day.

Then conclude with this prayer:

Heavenly Father, You have given us archangels to assist us during our pilgrimage on earth.

Saint Michael is our protector;

we ask him to come to our aid, fight for all our loved ones, and protect us from danger.

Saint Gabriel is a messenger of the Good News;

We ask him to help us clearly hear Your voice and to teach us the truth.

Saint Raphael is the healing angel;

we ask him to take our need for healing and that of the whole world to His throne in heaven.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen

First Reading: Isaiah 50:5-9a

Isaiah describes the willingness of the Suffering Servant to submit to the persecution of his enemies. This willingness stems from true faith in God, and the knowledge that the Lord will always be his help.

Second Reading: James 2:14-18

James states that if some one is hungry and you wish them well but do not help them, you have done them no good. He compares this to stating your faith, without backing it up with your actions. He reminds us that we must show our faith through our good works.

Gospel: Mark 8:27-35

Jesus taught his disciples that as the Messiah, he had to suffer much, be put to death, and rise three days later.

Peter began to disagree and Jesus reprimanded him for judging by human standards rather than by God’s. He told them that whoever would be willing to lose their life for the sake of Jesus and the gospel, will in fact preserve their life forever.
