Happy 50th anniversaries!

Many departments, the college itself in a sense, are in their 50th year this academic year.

The college in 1965.

Recently Nicole Dumbleton of our Development Office asked the archives about the date a particular

department was established. A good question, it raises a bigger story, namely the shift here 50 some years

ago from being a Teachers College to a College of Arts and Science. This was a dramatic transformation

that took place in the first several years of President Brown's time here. In many respects that is when the

college as we know it today was established.

Not only did we go from essentially two massive departments for the two degrees offered in the Teachers

College to a wide range of academic departments and degrees, but other familiar bodies started then. For

example the old Faculty Student Association ended and two new bodies were set up, the Faculty Senate

and the Brockport Student Government. During this same period we went from having a small group of

"watchmen" to having a professional police unit.

Attached is a document that at its end gives the list of academic departments then currently established, or

soon to be established, as set forth in the summer of 1966. If anyone would like to know more about when

their department or unit was established please do contact the archives!

Fluidity and Brittleness of Glass Highlight Faculty Exhibition

Exhibit runs from January 26 through February 26

The faculty of the Department of Art at The College at Brockport are all practicing artists who exhibit

nationally and internationally. In the upcoming Faculty Exhibition, they are presenting their most recent

works which encompass a variety of media, including ceramics, sculpture, drawing, painting, graphic

design and mixed media. The show will run from January 26 through February 26, 2017. The gallery is

located at 180 Holley Street, Brockport, and the exhibit is free and open to the public. An opening

reception will take place on January 26 at 4 pm.

Jennifer Hecker, a longtime faculty member, will be exhibiting some of her works that involve glass,

including “Water Fall.” Her fascination with working with glass has been going on for several years. To

her, the transparency and fluidity that glass possesses “suggests water. Water is, of course, essential for

life. And water has been in the news a lot lately: NASA’s discovery of water on Mars leads to speculation

about the possibility of life on that planet, while the contamination of the water supply in Flint, MI,

elicits shock and outrage at the callous indifference and criminal incompetence that allowed this atrocity

to occur. At the end of the movie The Big Short, we learn that the real-life hedge fund manager, Dr.

(22)

Michael Burry, played by Christian Bale, is now investing in water futures. Many experts agree that we

are heading toward a worldwide water crisis in the 21st century. Whoever has water will have power.

But can a country or corporation or individual really ‘own’ water? It’s crazy to think about.”

Other faculty members anticipated to be included in the show include Sarah Ballard, Chris Carson, Alisia

Chase, Duncan Chase, Eunsuh Choi, Mitch Christensen, Sara DiDonato, Debra Fisher, Amy Gendrou, Kitty

Hubbard, Tim Massey, Lori Mills, Jim Morris, Jennifer Osborne, Kurt Treeby, and Janet Winkie.

Student Behavioral Consultant Team: Who We Are and What We Do!

The Student Behavioral Consultant Team (SBCT) is a multidisciplinary team of College employees from

Academic Affairs, Hazen Center for Integrated Care (Student Health and Counseling Center), Residential

Life/Learning Communities, Student Conduct, University Police, Office for Students with Disabilities, and

the Enrollment Management and Student Affairs Vice President’s Office. This team meets weekly to

facilitate communication of information regarding students of concern and address instances of student

behavior which have raised concerns among faculty, staff and/or students at the College. This team,

acting as consultants, facilitates the coordination of efforts to respond to students’ needs, based on the

information gathered about the student’s behavior. SBCT is actively engaged in the early assessment

and intervention process of the student of concern.

The purpose of this team is to provide a confidential means for early intervention of students of concern

through collaboration with campus departments, faculty, staff and administrators. Students exhibiting

behaviors that are of concern in relation to their personal, physical and emotional well-being may be

referred to this team of professionals. Information from faculty, staff, administrators and students is

confidentially shared among the team members.

Faculty and staff may refer a student by completing an online referral form found at:

www.brockport.edu/support/student_behavioral_consultant_team/form

The referral is sent to the email account of Dr. Karen Logsdon, SBCT Chair & Case Manager, Assistant to

the VP, EMSA. Dr. Logsdon may contact the faculty/staff member that referred the student to seek

further information and also keep the faculty/staff member in the loop.

SBCT functions are guided by the standards of practice established by the National Behavioral

Intervention Team Association (NaBITA). For more information about SBCT membership and referral

procedures, refer to the SBCT webpage:

www.brockport.edu/support/student_behavioral_consultant_team

SBCT hosts workshops through the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) and also by

request will present at departmental/divisional meetings at the College. Outreach to the campus

community is an important role for this team, and since the team was formed in 2007, team members

have presented on the management of disruptive students, de-escalation strategies in and out of the

classroom, emergencies in the classroom, in addition to, sessions on raising awareness of the needs of

veteran students.

Chris Norment had the essay, "The Case for Wonder," published in the November/December

2016 issue of "Orion" magazine.

"The Case for Wonder" is an argument for the importance of wonder in science education, an

homage to Rachel Carson, and a jaundiced look at assessment. The essay is a much-extended

version of a much shorter piece published in "The Chronicle of Higher Education" in 2015.

Gala Concert featuring the Amadeus Chorale & Brockport Symphony Orchestra will

showcase Brockport students, alumni, faculty, and community members on-stage at Rochester's

Clover Center for the Arts.

(25)

Note: Celebrating its seventh innovative season, the Brockport Symphony Orchestra is not

affiliated with the Department of Theatre and Music Studies. This project is made possible with

funds from the Decentralization Program, a grant program of the New York State Council on the

Arts.

The Amadeus Chorale and Brockport Symphony Orchestra will join forces to present “Mozart’s

Birthday Celebration” on Saturday, January 28 at 7 p.m. at The Clover Center for Arts &

Spirituality, 1101 Clover Street in Rochester. Concert tickets are $10 each and can be purchased

online at brockportsymphony.org and at the door. Ample free parking is available at The Clover

Center, and there will be a complimentary dessert reception following the performance.

Under the direction of Brockport alumni Darla Bair and Jonathan Allentoff '14, this gala

celebration will highlight Mozart’s choral/orchestral masterpieces and showcase the talents of

clarinet soloist Rachel Roessel, vocal soloists Kristin Mellema and Faith Strohm, and

collaborative pianist Sally Martin.

Roessel, the orchestra’s principal clarinet and an active musician in the Greater Rochester area,

will perform the “Adagio” from Mozart’s beloved “Clarinet Concerto.” Mellema, who has taught

vocal music in the Victor Central School District since 2004, will appear as soloist in “Laudate

Dominum” and Strohm, a senior at Spencerport High School and 2016 NYSSMA Conference

All-State vocalist, will sing the “Alleluia” from “Exultate Jubilate.” Martin, who will perform on

piano throughout the evening, is the music director for the Brockport United Methodist Church

and also teaches music in the Holley Central School District.

A progress report on the "Little Library" project.

The Friends of Drake Library, among other projects,

have one going of setting up a "little library" on

campus. We reported on this some time ago, and

wanted to share an update on the project.

Gordy Fox '66, the builder of the little library, sent

some photos recently of it. It is almost done, as in the

photo here. It looks great, a wonderful scale model of

the old Normal school complex as it looked c1870.

This building was the college for many years before

it was torn down and replaced with Hartwell Hall 1938-39.

In addition to the little library, Cherise Oakley and her husband are donating a granite bench,

with a quote from Margaret Fuller, selected by President Macpherson from a list the group

submitted to her. The actual location of these items is yet to be determined, but keep an eye out,

sometime this spring they should be out on campus! If you'd be interested in taking part in the

library Friends group contact Charlie Cowling, it is a great group doing a lot for the library and

community.

Office of the Vice President for Administration and Finance

Date: January 31, 2017

To: The College at Brockport Campus Community

From James (Beau) Willis

Re: Administrative Policy Governance

The policy environment of a college is integral to sound business practices, effective institutional

decision-making,management of risk, and accountability to the public trust. The President’s

Cabinet has identified the need to strengthen the College’s policy environment as a key priority.

Campus policies can be difficult to access, are often vague or outdated, lack uniform format, and

frequently are confused with ‘historical practice.’ The fact that our operational environment is

subject to policy regulation from multiple entities – Federal, State, SUNY, SUNY Research

Foundation, etc. – only compounds the challenge we each face in meeting our individual

responsibilities to the College.

Last spring, President Macpherson asked me to constitute a Policy Infrastructure and Review

Work Group to develop a policy governance framework for the College. The President’s Cabinet

recently reviewed their progress and accepted their recommendation for a management

framework to oversee campus-wide administrative policy governance and a College Policy

website that will serve as the authoritative source for policy information. The Cabinet also

reviewed the draft of an overarching campus ‘policy on policies,’ Campus Administrative Policy

Development and Life Cycle Process, and ratified its publication for a 30-day campus review

and comment period, the final stage in the development of a policy prior to formal approval by

the College President. This policy establishes a standardized format, review, approval, and

distribution process for College administrative policies, and directs all administrative policies to

be appropriately approved and published in the web-based College at Brockport Policy

Library.

(37)

(www.brockport.edu/support/policies), where you can also access current campus policies by

category, index, or searchable format, along with policy development guidelines, SUNY and RF

policies, and Ethics and Compliance information. Going forward, the formulation of new

administrative policies will be managed through this framework. Existing policies will be

reviewed and updated on a three year cycle and migrated to the new format and Policy Library as

specified by the policy for the Campus Administrative Policy Development and Life Cycle

Process. This initiative is intended to provide the College community with ready access to policy

information, reduce risk and confusion, drive policy consistency and compliance, and enhance

campus communication about policy. All members of the College community (faculty, staff,

students and visitors) are responsible for operating within the policy environment

appropriate to their campus role. I encourage you to familiarize yourself with the tools available

at the College Policy website and utilize it as a reference in meeting your campus
