FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF UTAH
1 I am writing this, only my third Manager’s Memo, from my living room, sitting at a scratched-up old desk that I, luckily, had not gotten around to hauling away yet. My computer and monitor are sitting on top of stacks of old books, so that my computer is at an appropriate height for the many video conferences I’ve attended today. Zoom, WebEx, Teams, I’m familiar with all of them. So are many of you. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the lives of all Utahns in ways both significant and subtle.
While the coronavirus has forced us to increase our physical distance from each other, it has been amazing to see how it has also made our community pull together. Utahns are helping their neighbors who cannot get out to get their groceries, are supporting their local restaurants by ordering takeout, and are performing countless small acts of service for one another.
I’ve been inspired by how my colleagues here at PBS Utah have responded to the crisis, and have worked so hard to serve and connect our community. Our Education Program Manager began producing videos from her home showing activities that parents could do with their children while schools were closed. The team at The Hinckley Report figured out how
to host a round-table political discussion when participants couldn’t be in the same room, let alone at the same table. And our indomitable studio team produced a live town hall about the virus on the very same day that a 5.7 magnitude earthquake shook the station. These are just a few examples of the resiliency, dedication, and adaptability displayed by our entire staff. Because of their hard work, we’ll continue to bring you the programs you’ve come to depend on to be informed about the world around you, as well as the programs you occasionally need to divert you from it. And we’ll be introducing a new program in May,
Utah Insight, which will look at Utah issues in
an innovative way, beginning with the effects COVID-19 has had on our state.
I want to use this opportunity to thank each member of the staff of PBS Utah for their commitment to our mission and our viewers. And to thank you, our loyal supporters, for making it possible for us to fulfill that commitment.

Utah Insight, PBS Utah’s
new weekly series, examines the most pressing issues facing our state. Hosts Liz Adeola and RaeAnn Christensen join leading experts and local authorities to shed light on topics that matter most to Utahns, from air quality to affordable housing. The eleven-part series premieres Friday, May 15 at 7:30 p.m. on PBS Utah. Each half-hour episode of Utah Insight is
dedicated to one topic and features a panel of experts, interviews with people on the front lines, and a segment illustrating the human impact these issues have in the community. While the series presents an in-depth analysis of issues affecting the state, it also includes viewers in the conversation. Utah Insight
incorporates viewer comments and fields Utahns’ pressing questions to those who are best equipped to answer them.
Adeola and Christensen take turns hosting the series, which highlights individuals and organizations working to tackle the issues in their own way, from high school students creating art for air quality to a new initiative bringing tech jobs to rural communities. In the premiere episode, Utah Insight
presents economic recovery solutions for
those negatively impacted by COVID-19, with a focus on the unemployed, struggling small businesses, and the underinsured or uninsured people struggling to pay bills and connecting them to the resources they need to help them through this challenging time. Christensen speaks with Five Wives Vodka, a local business which pivoted to meet the public need for hand sanitizer in the wake of extraordinary demand during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In the first season, hosts Adeola and Christensen guide viewers through a series of topics, including the urban-rural divide in mental health services, education funding, emergency preparedness, the growing senior population, diversity, Utah’s tech boom, air quality, the growing homeless population, lack of women in politics, and affordable housing.
Utah Insight provides nuanced perspectives
from leading experts and local authorities about the real-life impacts these issues have on Utahns today. By addressing the issues that Utahns care about, this new PBS Utah series leaves viewers more informed and better prepared to confront the issues that impact their own lives and their communities.

American Experience explores the fascinating
life and tumultuous presidency of George W. Bush in a new two-part, four-hour biography of the 43rd U.S. president. The documentary features insights from historians, journalists, and members of the president’s inner circle, including Chiefs of Staff Andy Card and Joshua Bolten, speechwriter David Frum, press secretary Ari Fleischer, senior advisor Karl Rove, and others. The latest addition to the
American Experience award-winning series
of presidential biographies, George W. Bush
premieres Monday and Tuesday, May 4-5 at 8:00 p.m. on PBS Utah.
Part One, airing on Monday, May 4 at 8:00 p.m., chronicles Bush’s unorthodox road to the White House. The once wild son of a political dynasty, few expected Bush to ascend to the presidency. Yet 36 days after the November 2000 election, Bush emerged the victor of the most hotly contested race in the nation’s history. Little in the new president’s past could have prepared him for the events that unfolded on September 11, 2001. Bush’s response to the deadly terrorist attacks would come to define a new era in American foreign policy.
Part Two, airing on Tuesday, May 5 at 8:00 p.m., opens with the ensuing war in Iraq and continues through Bush’s second term, as the President confronts the devastating impact of Hurricane Katrina and the most serious financial crisis since the Great Depression.
“George W. Bush took office less than 10 months before 9/11 ushered in a new era of fear, anger, and uncertainty, as news of threat levels and anthrax scares became a daily occurrence,” said Susan Bellows, American Experience senior producer. “Twenty years
after the dramatic Bush-Gore election of 2000 that introduced the term ‘hanging chad’ to our lexicon, this new film explores the evolution of George W. Bush’s character and how it shaped his presidency.”
“What makes George W. Bush such a fascinating subject is that he was one of the least prepared presidents in our history, yet faced some of the greatest challenges,” said filmmaker Barak Goodman. “Not since Lincoln has such an inexperienced leader been called upon in a moment of genuine existential crisis. How Bush evolved in office under these pressures — at first struggling mightily, but later finding his feet — illuminates not only his character, but the evolving nature of power and the presidency in an increasingly dangerous world.”
