Since two years, smartphones and tablets support the EAP-SIM

authentication for the WiFi access, which involves the SIM or USIM

card in the initial authentication with the HLR.

The GSM and WiFi operators can then offer a seamless usage of all

the data services, Voice and messages when the user is WiFi

connected.

This is most useful to offload the GPRS network, and for smaller

operators, allows to cover small areas such as villages with

unexpensive WiFi base stations with the same charging policy.

In a previous patent owned by HALYS, the use of SIM cards to authenticate users was already forecasted with USB card readers plugged to the PC and with smartphones, allowing to charge the customers using Voip, same way as they are under GSM coverage.

Today, the new solution developped by Halys, permits to authenticate users via EAP-SIM protocol. This solution is attractive to many operators.

Halys fully supports this authentication scheme, standardised since 2008, with our AAA-MAP/SS7 Gateway, the data services with our SGSN gateway and the circuit mode VoIP-SMS with the Media Gateway, all three being integrated in the same platform.

The need for a separate VoIP authentication being suppressed and also the need to distribute authentication keys, this is an important step to make the use of VoIP system by the GSM operators become seamless with current 3G.

THE STUDY CASE : GSM & WIFI on board ?

The winning duet

WIFI on board: new services, new uses,

new growth

.

The gradual deployment of WiFi in airplanes will bring new services available for passengers and therefore new types of revenue for operators like airlines.

These new uses will also allow new partnerships. The case of the streaming of videos in airplanes, allows to see the emergence of new agreements: such as ABC Group with the Virgin Group Airlines.

New services means new revenues to share between operators : Airlines, GSM operator, IFE operator, OTT services.

The HALYS VOIP to GSM Solution allows the In-flight GSM operator and its partners to earn more revenues and offer a High Quality Service for the passengers.

A live test

:

The 8th of March 2012, we called the GSM phone number of one of our partner (we will call him here : John) during his trip to Hong-Kong (100% business class Airbus A330).

John was registered on the aircaft's WiFi connected with the Halys MSC/VLR-SIP ground system.

John was carrying a PC to test the visio quality and also a Iphone, both using standard "SIP clients". After the tests,

John said : " The voice quality was quite good and even better than GSM".

SMS were sent (and received) both from the ground and from John.

This in-flight usage shows that the internet access in modern airplanes has the quality to provide in-flight voice and even visio services using IP (no GSM coverage, the aircraft had only WiFi activated).

At the moment, no other system than HALYS In-Flight VOIP<->GSM solution, does it : Transparent Call or sms TO gsm number / VoiP.
