Do you know who discovered the Philippines? Bet you do. In this story you are going to read and find out who discovered America.

DISCOVERY OF AMERICA

Columbus was born Christoforo Colombo in Genoa, Italy. Not much is known of his early life except that he was poor and that he began to make sea voyages when he was quite young. For a while he lived in Lisbon, Portugal, where he married the daughter of a navigator. Columbus studied charts and read about navigation and instruments. When he made up his mind to look for a westward route to the East, he tried to have interest in the City of Genoa in his bold plan but failed. Columbus then tried the King of Portugal, King Henry VII of England and finally King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain who agreed to send the expedition after eight years when he pledged her jewels to help pay for it.

Columbus sailed with 100 men in his three small ships. The prevailing trade winds took them in southwesternly directions. His sailors became frightened and wanted to turn back and some of them even threatened to throw Columbus overboard if he refused to return. Nevertheless, the ships sailed on and the men got encouraged when they saw birds and floating grasses in the sea. That October night they sighted the island named San Salvador which means “Holy Savior”.

After Columbus’ voyages, many sailors were sent out to new colonies. One of them was a merchant named Amerigo Vespucci who found Brazil and Rio de Janeiro. The two colonies came to be called America. When Columbus came to America, he called the natives Indians because he thought he had reached the Indies.

Because of Columbus’ achievements, Queen Isabella made him a member of Spanish nobility and Admiral of the Sea, and Viceroy of all Spain’s land in the west. Columbus died in 1506 a poor and unhappy man.

Then it sends informations back to earth by radio. In 1997, a robot spacecraft named Sojourner landed on planet Mars. This shoebox-size spacecraft sent pictures of the surface of the planet to the earth.

There is definitely clean living over the South Pole. A scientist there doesn’t mind the cold or the thin air unpleasant for people but good for astronomy. The low humidity gives astronomers a clear window on the universe. Through special telescopes, the scientists study invisible portions of the electromagnetic spectrum.
