Most noted for his short stories, Ray Bradbury has also written novels, children’s books, plays, screenplays, television scripts, and poetry. His vivid imagination, lively style, and

social commentary have set him apart in the world of fantasy and science-fiction writers.

Bradbury was born in Waukegan,

Illinois, in 1920. His family moved to Los Angeles in 1934. He became

interested in books and writing early in life.

The

butterfly effect

, as it is

known, is the idea that the

disturbance of the air by a

single butterfly

is enough to

change the weather

patterns all over the world.

In the early 1960s a

meteorologist was running

computerized equations to

model and predict weather

conditions. Having run a

particular sequence, he

decided to repeat it. He

Everything started out the

and within a short time the new

weather pattern was totally

different from the first. What

the scientist discovered (now

is that with even a very

loosely as fiction that deals

with the impact of science

Sometimes the technology is

In the following short story, Ray Bradbury

implies that seemingly insignificant actions

can change the future for an entire generation.

Before you read the story, think about the

following questions:

How might your actions during your lifetime

affect someone living one hundred years in

the future?

Do you believe that you have a responsibility
