Scope and Content Note: The Hayes-Steele Genealogical Collection consists of genealogical records and

research pertaining to the Hayes and Steele family authored by former Rock Hill and Lancaster, SC resident Claude R. Smith (ca1924-2015). There is also information related to following allied families: Anderson; Baker; Barron; Barry; Bigger; Boyd; Brandon; Brewer; Carothers; Drennan; Eakle;

Edwards; Fee; Gladden; Henderson; Matthews; McCleland; McCreight; McFadden; Miller; Shillinglaw; Simril; Thomasson; Wherry; White; Williams;. The family records consists of genealogy lists and charts, maps, photographs, property and house plans, death announcements, newspapers articles, marriage licenses, and family anecdotes.

This collection is organized into two sections: Genealogical Binders and Genealogical Notes. The

Genealogical Binders were created by the author of this collection Claude R. Smith as the final product of his research into the Hayes-Steele Family. The Genealogical Notes are mostly copies of the material in the Genealogical Binders. There is also an Appendix at the end of this inventory with a Family Name index.

Claude R. Smith Obituary

A devoted husband and father, a volunteer, and a retired engineer from the local Exxon Refinery, Claude R. Smith passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2015, at the age of 91. He was born in Waynesville, NC, and grew up in Rock Hill and

Lancaster, SC. He has been a resident of Baton Rouge for 54 years. He graduated from Clemson College in 1947 and was an Army Air Forces World War II veteran, flying 24 combat missions as a B-24 navigator with the 5th Air Force in the Southwest Pacific. He was awarded the Air Medal. He was a member of Alpha Phi Omega, Alpha Chi Sigma, Istrouma Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Order of the Arrow, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Clemson Alumni Association, LSU Alumni Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, Capital Area Literacy Coalition, Louisiana Council for Literacy, Louisiana Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Louisiana Historical Society and other local historical and cultural organizations. He was awarded the St. George Medal, the Catholic Church's adult award for Scout leadership. Also, he was honored as a Golden Rule nominee and in 1995 he was recognized by Catholic Community Services as the Volunteer of the Year. He was an active volunteer all his life: in his Church, and especially as a Scoutmaster and as a volunteer in the Catholic Community Services ESL program. He and his wife, Freda Joyce Guerin, who predeceased him by 36 years, leave a legacy of four sons and one daughter, their spouses, and eight grandchildren: Ron and Karen Cole Smith of Addison, TX; Steve Smith of Arlington Heights, IL; Lee and Alex Favre Smith of New Roads, LA and their son Pierson; Greg and Becky Cheatham Smith of Austin, TX and their children, Audrey, Erin, and Peyton; Susan and Keith Mayeaux of Prairieville, LA and their children Maria, Madison, McKenzie, and Daniel. Claude is survived by his half-brother George Lee Smith of Fort Smith, AR. Also, he will be remembered by his longtime friend, Melva Staub. As an avid genealogist, Claude would have wanted it known that his maternal

grandparents were John Andrew Hayes and Frances Elizabeth Steele and his paternal grandparents were George Lee Smith and Mary Ellen Alexander. His parents were Claude Rube Smith and Gillie Mae (later changed to Mary Gill) Hayes. Claude's wife, Freda Joyce Guerin, was the daughter of Frank Joseph Guerin and Ethel Mary Pourciau. The family would like to thank the staff of St. Joseph Hospice - The Carpenter House for their compassionate and attentive care of their father. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Boy Scouts of America or St. Joseph Hospice (www.stjosephhospicefoundation.org). A Memorial Service will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home on Friday, March 20th. Visitation will be between 5:00 PM and 9:00 PM with a Memorial Service from 7:00 PM to 7:30 PM. Greenoaks Funeral Home is located at 9595 Florida Blvd in Baton Rouge, LA.

1 1-2 HAYES BOOK 1 1995-1996, nd

It contains letter, sent in 1996, from Barbara Brewer to Claude Smith with Warren Owen’s obituary and a missive from Clemson Alumni Association. There are pictures of the Old Miller Place and a copy of the 1928 marriage license for John A. Hayes and W. A. Giles in the side flaps. There are tombstone pictures and obituaries for the Hayes. There is a letter, sent in 1995, from Lib Faulkenberry about Hayes and Raymond Gladden to Claude Smith. On the other inside flaps there is the copy of the 1931 Evening Herald, Rock Hill, S.C. Dates of

people’s births and deaths included within are between the years 1706 and 2000.

1 3-4 HAYES BOOK 2 1976, 1998, 2002, nd

It contains the Hayes’ standard pedigree trees, obituaries (some from 2002 The Herald and 2002 Charlotte Observer), tombstone photos, and a copy of 1913 marriage license for Louis Edgar Hayes and Mary L. Starnes Hayes, another in 1920 for Cammie Eva Hayes Simril and William Newton Simril, and another in 1930 for Lula Hayes and J. Barnett Bigger. There is a 1998 letter from Margaret S. Simril to Claude R. Smith about deaths in the family. There is a funeral and obituary notice for Mary Gill Hayes in the Morning Advocate Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1976. Dates of people’s births and deaths included within are between the years 1706 and 1988.

2 5-6 HAYES BOOK 3 1935, 1984, 1989,

It contains the Hayes family’s obituaries, tombstone pictures, a copy of 2004, 2008, nd a 1921 marriage license for J. Simril Matthews and Margaret Hayes,

and a picture of the Matthews. It has cutouts of the 1989 Charlotte

Observer and 1989 The Herald obituaries for James Simril Matthews

Jr. A funerary thank you note by the Hayes Family, a funerary thank you note by Rubye and Ollie of the Hayes Family, and a memorial record for Myrtle Hayes Henley are included. The is also a copy of a 1928 marriage certificate for William Sandifer and Pearle M. Hayes, a letter from Barbra Brewer to Claude Smith written in 2004 containing an obituary of Pearle Sandifer Johnson. Dates of people’s birth and deaths included within are between the years 1887 and 1994.

2 7-8 LOUIS EDGAR HAYES & MARY L. STARNES HAYES BOOK 1998, nd The binder’s first flap contains a letter from Claude Smith to Julie (of

the Hayes Family), which was written in 1998, talking about his research. The contents of the binder are: TAPS pictures, pictures of the Ebenezer sign, picture of John Andrew Hayes and Frances Elizabeth Steele Hayes, picture of the Old Miller Place, ancestor chars for John Andrew Hayes, ancestor charts for Frances Elizabeth Steele Hayes, a genealogy sketch for Matthew Hayes, and Matthew Hayes’ will. There are obituary notices for Louis Edgar Hayes and Mary Starnes Hayes, gravesite photos for the aforementioned couple, and a photo copy of the marriage license of the aforementioned copy. There are obituary notices for Louis Starnes Hayes, Carlton Wells Hayes, and Carlton Wells Hayes, Jr. There is also an excerpt from the Wherry book.

3 9-11 SOME BEGATS OF MATTHEW HAYES BOOK 2011, nd

It filled with the finalized pages showing the genealogy of the Hayes family. There are maps included of local areas and blueprints of the Old Miller Place, a color picture of the Hayes Family grave, and some papers that allow for inspection into the Matthew Hayes family.

It contains the descendant sheets for the Steele Family. In this book the 2011-2012, 2014- sheets are for Archibald Steele (1728-1805) and his children. The first 2015, nd

This series consists of maps of South Carolina around the Catawba River region. There is a photocopy of a map that supposedly shows where the Hayes’ family lived. There is a map of the York County area in South Carolina during 1895, a copy of this same map but titled

South Carolina Pidemont (sic) Turn of the 20th Century (Piedmont

region most likely), three maps of York County, South Carolina during 1910, and maps of York County, South Carolina during 2010. There are also a few copies of Sanborn Fire Insurance maps including a ca1900 map which shows 305 & 311 N. Confederate Ave., Central School, Laurelwood Cemetery, 332 E. Black St., and 148 N.

Confederate Ave. indicated with numbers. There is another Sanborn map for 1930+ which contains the same labels but has a slightly different perspective. The other Sanborn maps are just a closer view of 305 & 311 N. Confederate Ave and 148 N. Confederate Ave.

These are two typed copies of Matthew Hayes’ will and another copy printed. This was his last will and testament. It goes over his land holdings and his other remains. The witnesses were David McCreight, Mary Owens, and John McCreight. This was proved January 14, 1794 by D. Evans C.F.C. It was recorded in will book #2 page 45 and recorded January 23, 1794 Apt. #3 File #108.

All of these attached documents most likely were copies of what was in the envelope. In the folder there is an obituary for Lera Marcene Baker Hayes, which has an attachment of the genealogy of Billy Drennan Hayes and Lera Marcene Baker. The is a photocopy of the 1942 Associate Reformed Presbyterian , paper on the Chester Covenanters by Henry Nunnery, Ederington’s History of Fairfield County South Carolina, and photocopies of a boiler

advertisement. There are copies of newspaper articles about K.M.M.S. (a York Institution), a church in former school, and Kings Mountain Military School. All are in York County, South Carolina.
