Introduction

Clifton College comprises three Schools and therefore offers the opportunity for continuity of education for girls and boys from ages 3 to 18:

Butcombe Pre-Preparatory School – Nursery to Year 3 The Preparatory School – Year 4 to Year 8

The Upper School – Year 9 to Year 13

Each year a number of awards are offered to girls and boys in order for them to be able to come to Clifton. These are, broadly, in two categories:

Scholarships and Awards: these are merit-based awards and are competed for via examination, audition or other appropriate assessment. Candidates are placed in a rank order of merit based on their performance. The maximum award available by scholarship examination or assessment is 25% of the fees. The combined value of two or more Scholarships or Awards cannot exceed this amount.

Bursaries: these are means-tested awards and are made at the School's discretion. They are given in addition to a Scholarship or Award. In accordance with the Charities Commission guidelines Bursaries are made following the completion of a Grant

Application Form (GAF) which includes a ‘Confidential Statement of Financial Circumstances’. Bursaries may, in exceptional circumstances, be awarded up to 100% of the fees. Where appropriate, applications for Bursaries should be submitted with the Scholarship application form.

The old cliFToniAn SocieTy ScholArShiPS

The Old Cliftonian Society funds a number of Scholarships to candidates who meet specific criteria and where there is financial need. In addition, bursaries may be available depending on the current commitments of the Society. There are currently 10 Scholarships and Awards funded by the Society every year in addition to a varying number of bursaries, all with a range of award values. Candidates should apply to the School in the normal way. It will be clear at this stage if a candidate meets the criteria of any particular award and the Society can then become involved. In all cases, the criterion of financial need will be assessed by completion of a Grant Application Form, as explained in the Introduction section of the leaflet.

Boys and girls who attend clifton college Preparatory

School are also eligible for all 13+ Scholarships and

Awards, and suitable candidates will be nominated by the

Headmaster of The Preparatory School after consultation with parents.

Candidates should be over 12½ and under 14 on 1st September 2014. They will be called for a music audition at Clifton College on Tuesday 28th or Wednesday 29th January 2014. Candidates will be asked to perform two contrasting pieces on their main instrument. They should be able to perform on a second instrument and may offer singing as well. There is no written examination.

All Music awards include free tuition in two instruments (one of which may be singing). The age of candidates will be taken into consideration in making the awards. Sport Awards, music, Art and organ Scholarships: open to candidates from other schools wishing to join Clifton in the Sixth Form.

A limited number of awards are available for girls and boys who offer exceptional talent in these areas. Practical assessment, auditions and interviews will, if possible, take place at the same time as the Academic Scholarships in November 2013 or February 2014 – see above for dates and details. The Directors of Sport and Music are always happy to talk to prospective candidates.

In Sport we are ideally looking for candidates who excel in two or more team sports, although excellence in individual sports may also be considered. The successful candidates will have Regional and/or International potential at senior school level and beyond. In Music candidates will be asked to perform two contrasting pieces on their main instrument which should be of about Grade 8 standard. They should also be able to perform well on a second instrument. Voice is acceptable as either instrument. There is no written examination. The Davie Art Scholarship will be awarded to a Sixth Form pupil of outstanding artistic merit. The Sir david Willcocks organ Scholarship is open to pupils of at least Grade 7 standard who aspire to become an Organ scholar

at a top university or music college. They would be expected to take Music or Music Technology at A-Level. Tuition in organ will be provided as well as lessons in a further instrument or voice. The level of this award is up to £5,000 p.a. with any additional funding being strictly means-tested.

The closing date for entries for Academic & music Scholarships and for Sport Awards is 28th october 2013 for the november assessments or 3rd February 2014 for the February assessments. Governors’ Scholarships: are available for any talented pupil living in the city of Bristol who wish to join the Sixth Form, but for whom the fees are entirely prohibitive.

These awards may cover the full tuition costs for a day pupil and special consideration will be given to candidates who we believe will most benefit from, and contribute to, the rich and varied life of the College. Assessment will vary and will be appropriate to the range of talents offered by a candidate, but for all candidates it will include an interview with the Head Master.

Applications forms are available from the Admissions Office and although there is no fixed time for interview and assessment, any application must be made prior to the end of February in the year of entry. All applications must be accompanied by a Confidential Statement of Financial Circumstances – forms are available on request.
