STATEMENT – FEBRUARY 2, 2015
The focus of my academic research is to investigate the potential role of design and the designer in the transmission of ideas. Much of my creative practice has been focused on the design of physical and digital books, periodicals, and didactic environments (museum labeling, explanatory panels, and signage). My writing and speaking has been more focused on the need for a cross-media graphic/ communication design culture that makes sense, and the necessity of explicitly building and defining that culture through new forms of dialogue. The third leg is education – the design of education itself, especially education that crosses design with other disciplines or modes of practice, and that acknowledges the contemporary landscape. Somewhere there is an intersection between the transmission of culture and ideas through the book, the periodical, the group, the university, and the museum – a transmission that technological and economic shifts have changed completely.
