Copyright (1985) by Al Mann Exclusives This treatise is being written due to repeated requests from AME subscribers asking for my favorite method for private readings.
Through the years I have tried many methods and I have noticed the reaction of the sitters. They are all amused by 'readings.' Whether by reading the cards, the palm or dead bones. But what thrills them and awes them is the surprising (to them) ability of the pyschic of reading their thoughts. Furthermore, the Reader does not need to go to the cemetery to read tombstones, or hiring an investigator to check up on the sitter. The Reader can get all the information he needs for an impressive reading from
the sitter! sitting across the table from him! whom he has never seen before! Charles H. Foster capitalized on a similar method 100 years ago. You will learn a great deal about the sitter, a total stranger a moment before he walked inl He or she will reveal all to you unknowingly!
THE GYPSIES: For a small fee, a Gypsy will tell you your fortune. She will read the cards, your palm, tea leaves, or gaze into the crystal!
For the same fee, a side-show circus graphologist will analyse your handwriting. You will pay a bit more for a good cold reading or a 'Psychic Reading.' A 'hot' reading will cost a bit more ($100). This the reader does after you have made an application and she has investigated you fully. She will
tell you where your grandmother is buried and how many children your children have.
BUT ALAS! Only a Mentalist can read the thought! Only a Mentalist can thrill the sitter with an enchanting visit into the Fourth Dimension! An awe-some experience that will never be forgotten. The Mentalist delves into th deeper recesses of the sitter's mind and tells what he or she is thinking at the very moment! Some jump with joy. Other are stunned into silence. Some al-most faint, while others will run away from you. IT is a tartling
revela-tion and at the heat of the moment, the Mentalist can name his own price!

A MYSTERY: During a four-hour stint, without a break, doing private reading for some fashionable ladies and some men, I noticed an over-reation in the sitters. They were startingly amazed and mystified and after they left my office, they commented to the crowd outside that I had read thir minds while analyzing their handwriting! Even the skeptics were baffled. One said, "1 don't know how you got your information. You did not use a carbon impression or even glanced at the writing pad.!"
I became curious to know what it was that I was doing that so baffled the sitters. So I placed myself in their seat, and this is what they saw:
IGH DOMAIN AN AL MANN EXCLUSIVE
A MYSTERY cont.
. .
I was doing 'Gemel's Messages' from Mental-Ettes. The sitters were asked to write a question and a name (instead of two questions) on a large sheet of paper, 5 X 8. in., while I turned my back. When finished they were told to fold the sheet in half, and then in half again and once more in half. In the end they held a small wad of folded paper. During the reading, this folded wad of pa-per is torn to bits by me and the pieces dropped into a tall-necked wine bottle.
Eventually the question and the name are revealed. In their minds, the sitter unconsciously surmised that in order for anyone to read the question and name, the paper had to be unfolded as many times as it was folded. They never saw me unfold anything (?) and therein rested the mystery! In their minds they concluded that I could not get the written information by reading it, there-for I had to get it by some other unknown means. Could it be Mindreading?!
The effect on the lay mind is profound! and their is no way in which the lay mind can remotely suspect that you can read the writting after tearing a multi-folded paper to bits!

Here is my favorite 'Reading' in detail from start to finish. Only one person is allowed into the Inner Sanctum (the room or nook where the Reader sits) at one time. The same routine is followed with each sitter and , except for the difference in the handwriting analysis, the patter is the same.REQUIERED: Two pads of writing paper, white and without lines, 5 by 8 inches square; some #2 lead pencils; a tall-necked wine bottle for dropping in the
torn messages (optional, you can use a waste basket.); knowledge of the basic rudiments of graphology; a small magnifying glass (optional); plus the secret of Gemel's Mess~g~s (detailed later). Double-sided scotch tape and a tablet or slate may be used.
THE READING: When the sitter enters the room he or she is received with great courtesy and a big smile. He is asked to be seated and then is plied heavily with flatter. To the ladies, you may say, "What a bea-u-ti-full dress you have. It looks so well on you." or "My!, MY!, your hair looks so beau-ti-fulU" To the men it is well to say, lIyou look so distinguised!" The sitter is thanked for his or her interest and then is told that he or she is a very special person. (Keep in mind that the sitter is an interesting person, progressive and curious and dynamic. Otherwise they would not be interested in your reading. The do-nothings, down-and-outers, dullards, and pessimistic boors will probably never sit with you. These couldn't care less for your readings.) It is well to tell the sitter, "The very fact that you are interested in a reading, shows that you are a dynamic individual."
III consider you a very special person so I propose a very special test. Please think of a question concerning your life. Do not tell me the question or anyone else. Please write it down secretly on this pad as I turn my back."
(You hand the person the paper pad that is prepared for doing Gemel's Messa-ges.) "And also think of the name of some person that is inportant to you and'write it on the lower lines."
I~ave you finished? Fine! Then tear the sheet away from the pad and fold it exactly in half. Please fold it once more in half. And again in half."
You have turned to face the sitter as the last two folds of the paper are made. Instruct the sitter to hold the folded wad of paper between his two hands as you put your two hands around his. "I am going to endeaver to answer the question and I am going to assume it is an honest question as I am sure it is."
HIGH DOMAIN AN AL MANN EXCLUSIVE IN DETAIL cont.
.
..
While still holding the sitters hands tell him to memorize a simple
sentence - I am walking down the street to get a horse and buggy out of the old carriage house. -- "Now I want you to write that sentence on this other
pad." The sitter is given a pencil and the second pad and also instructed to turn the first pad face down. "I have been accused of reading the impression of the question from the second sheet. So Please put it away so that I can not see it."
As the sitter reaches for the pencil you take back the folded wad of paper saying, "We do not need this anymore." And tear it up (retaining the vital
center fold) and throw the pieces away making sure that tbe sitter sees the
ac-tion.
While the sitter writes, you have ample time to pick up the large tablet or slate and attach the stolen pieces to ~he piece of double scotch tape on the tablet or slate. Read the question and name and secretly discard the pieces of paper. The sitter can be instructed to repeat the same sentence again a second and even a third time so that it covers half of the paper. Then tell the sitter when finished, to draw a tree,. "Please draw a tree. Any kind of tree."
Everything is set for the final coup! Give the sitter as good a reading as possible by using the signs from his handwriting analysis. and then say, "For
some reason I get the impression that you are doubtful about __ " and answer the
sitter's question and tell him the name of the person in their minds.
You can reveal the name of the person with the same seriousness as you
would do a Living and Dead Test, bit by bit with the dramatic revelation, (see "A link With Eternity," in Mental-Ettes.)

Why graphology? Graphology is the best methodther
~
is for {earning hard facts about a total stranger instantly, simply by studyinghis handwriting. His or her handwriting will reveal to you the way the sitter
thinks, therefor the way he lives and acts. The sitter will be amazed at
what you tell him from his handwriting.
"In every man's writings, the character of the writer must be recorded." Goethe (1828)
If you already have a college degree in graphology, fine and well, BUT all you really need to give the sitter an impressive reading is to learn the
rudiments of the art. And this you can get from an inexpensive pulp magazine
on the subject which you can pick up at the newstand or a second hand book
store.
By the rudiments I mean that all you do is notice whether the writer writes his letters leaning to the right or to the left. TO THE RIGHT: means
that the writer leads with his heart. He is affectionate, sentimental, friendlyl TO THE LEFT: means that he or she leads with the mind. The person is a
good leader and businessman. Everything he does must be approved by the mind. IF SITTER WRITES HIS SENTENCES GOING UPHILL: He is an optimist!
IF DOWNHILL: He is a pessimist. IN A STRAIGHT LINE: denotes a phlegmatic indi
-vidual.
IF WRITING IS CRAMPED COVERING MOST OF THE PAPER WITHOUT WASTE: The
writer is thrifty. IF TOO MUCH SPACE AND PAPER IS WASTED; The writer is extra~ vagant!

With the above information you should be able to give the sitter a very good reading.

For completeness, here is an up-to-date version of
Gemel's Messages from Mental-Ettes.
The sitter is given a paper pad and pencil to write
his question. The pad measures 5 by 8 in. As in Fig. 1,
the pad has on it some pencil lines. The top line is 1~
inches from the top edge of the pad and the other three lines
below it are 1/2 inch apart. The bottom line is
one inch from the bottom edge and the three lines above it
are 1/2 inch apart. Mark the sections 1 and 2 as this will
help you later. Originally the itter was told to write Fig. 1
out 2 questions, but experience has shown that one question is sufficient as
it carries a tremendous wallop in effect. The sitter is told to write his
question on the top lines and to think of a name and write it (or print it)
on the bottom lines. When finished he is told to tear off the sheet
from the pad and to turn the pad face down. He is then told to fold the
sheet exactly in half, and then in half again and again in half. (PLEASE NOTE:
Do not tell the sitter to fold the sheet once, a second time and a third time.
If you do He will remember that the paper was folded .three times, whereas if he
is told to fold the paper in half, and again in half and again in half, he will
remember that the paper was folded several times! perhaps three four or five
times! which deepens the my tery).
After the sitter folds the paper three times, it will
resemble Fig. 2. Tell the sitter that the folded paper is
no longer needed, take it and tear it up in the usual
classic center-tear method, secretly retaining the
quarter section marked X. You will now have in your

The ritual that follows is an elaboration on a ro tine given to the author by Prince

ome amazing things have happened when you

is xposed BUT the card appears to be still well
secured by the dog-clip, Fig. 13.
BUT unknown to the sitter, the back fold of
the card was automatically released as is show in
Fig. 14! This side is of course kept from the sitter's view.
Keep the card flat on the table with the sig -nature showing and make a short study of it. Give the
Fig. 13 sitter a g od short reading and at the same time look for special
like flourishes, hooks or high flying dots, etc. Make a big to-do
of this. Say that the last letter shows a tiny hook.
"You are an amazing per on. You hold on to thi gs. When
you start omething you stick with it. Take a look
at this tiny hook."
Here y u pick up the card so that the signatur
is facing the sitter, give her/him a magnifying
glass and point to the hook or knot.
While the sitter is looking at her signature
you have ample time to stick your thumb into the
loose last fold of the card and now you can asily
read her question and see th design!
When finished mov the clip back into place

and reveal the question and then the design by drawing it on a slate, etc.
Then you can remove the clip and hand the folded card to the sitter to

The success of the technique depends totally on the irregular fold of
the card. Figs. 15 and 16 show a better view of the folds.
