FROM THE PASTOR:
25th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today’s gospel is about salvation, and God’s promises. Jesus gives us a very powerful and provocative story about an extraordinarily generous landlord of a vineyard, and his treatment of the day workers who come so late in the day. The story is about salvation and not economics.
Many are surprised at this parable. They find it unfair to give the same reward to everyone, without taking into account the labor and sacrifices of everyone. However, we should pay close attention to the story. Jesus makes a comparison, not of several laborers, but of several groups of laborers. Each group represents a nation or a social class, and while some of them have long ago received the word of God, others have just become believers.
God shows compassion to whomsoever he wants. Sometimes, we do not like that. We seem to blame God for saving that child abuser, for reaching out to that rapist on death row, or for showing compassion to that drug pusher. The parable of the owner of a vineyard calls us to let God be generous to anyone he wants. And so, when those who came early to work complained about the owner giving the same wages to the latecomers, Jesus makes the owner say: “Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me?” [Mt 20:15]. In other words, it is about the incredible generosity of our God and his boundless mercy and forgiveness. So, when we hear about the conversion of a sinner whom we would rather have wiped off the face of the earth, let us not become envious; but be motivated to be generous as God is.
