Dick is a missionary to the Arab world and author/editor of the best-selling e-book, The Live Dead Journal. He is seen here walking with protestors in Tahrir Square during the Arab Spring revolution in Egypt.

“ In my ongoing desire to learn to abide in Jesus and live from that

place of rest and strength among unreached peoples, AGTS has

been invaluable to my personal missiological breakthrough. The

whole PhD process has contributed to the journey: incredible

classes, erudite professors, challenging reading, experienced

colleagues, all in the atmosphere of the Spirit—knowledge on

fire. It has directly impacted my daily living and mission.”

Some areas of study distinctive to the AGTS environment include

• Spiritual and emotional formation of the leader

• Relational dynamics of leadership

• Building disciple-making ministry

• Communicating Christian faith in a pluralistic society

• Intercultural studies in theological perspective

• Pentecostal perspectives on justice, relief and development In a culture where the only constant is change, AGTS remains

grounded in God’s Word while providing a leading-edge curriculum that challenges students to holistically address current issues with creativity and innovation. This environment encourages students to think outside the box, equipping them to be adaptive, sensitive and relevant to the context in which God has placed them. Such flexibility, combined with a radical dependence on the Spirit, lends itself to a willingness and an ability to address complex issues, while leading the church and society through deep change.

FROM THE BEST

AGTS faculty members represent more than advanced degrees and academic skill. They arescholar-practitioners on the front lines of ministry, doing and writing about what they teach. Whether venturing on missions into countries that restrict the gospel, battling the AIDS epidemic in South Africa, overseeing the rescue of children from the sex trade in India, developing systems for theological education in majority-world countries or building a home for a family to break the cycle of poverty, AGTS faculty members minister all over the world.

Smaller class sizes enhance dialogue and give students more opportunity for interaction. Mentoring occurs in classes, faculty offices, hallways, community fellowships and practicum settings.

Faculty

All regular faculty have earned the highest degrees in their field. The student/faculty ratio is 15.6 to 1.

Dr. Deborah M. Gill, Professor of New Testament Exposition, Director of Study Tours

“ My life purpose is to influence positive change through the ministry of the Word accompanied with signs and wonders and incarnated through relationships and integrity. My motto is grace and truth. And my goal is to be a best friend of Jesus and to love others toward Him.”

Dr. Johan Mostert, Professor of Community Psychology

“ I am passionate about helping students gain a global and holistic perspective on the power of the gospel to transform lives and change entire communities.”

Dr. Doug Oss, Professor of Bible Exposition,

Director of PhD in Biblical Interpretation and Theology “ I believe the pulpits of our churches determine the future path

of our fellowship. Expository preaching provides the main course for a healthy future.”

Theological education is enhanced by the opportunity to build face-to-face mentoring relationships with faculty, to network with peers and other leaders and to be formed in a community environment. But we are also committed to providing flexible course

structures to accommodate as many students as possible.

Student Ministry Opportunities

The greater Springfield metropolitan area offers

many diverse opportunities for ministry due to its high concentration of church, parachurch and community organizations.

Matthew Maestas

MDiv student “ Coming to AGTS with a

business degree, I had little knowledge of Scripture. The professors at AGTS understand that everyone comes from different backgrounds. I have found the community here to be supportive, enabling everyone to succeed.”

Master of Theology

(32 credits)

The Master of Theology (ThM) is an advanced program of study, taken after an MDiv or MATS, integrating New and Old Testament exegesis with

the disciplines of both biblical theology and systematic theology. It will enhance students’ ability to conduct scholarly study and research in one of four concentrations:

• Biblical Interpretation and Old Testament • Biblical Interpretation and New Testament • Biblical Theology

• Systematic Theology

The ThM is intended for students desiring to prepare for scholarly theological leadership in the church (local church, global missions, parachurch organizations and denominations) through academic teaching and writing, scholarly ministerial practice and/or further graduate theological study at the PhD level. The Hybrid

(online and face-2-face)

Master of Pastoral Leadership

(36–48* credits)

The Master of Pastoral Leadership (MPL) is an in-service, hybrid degree that allows people in full-time ministry to complete a master’s degree in as little as two years,* without having to relocate. It is designed for men and women who have been in vocational ministry for at least five years and want to enhance their ministry leadership skills.

This more complete approach to pastoral leadership

development has been designed around the following areas:

• Biblical foundations

(may be reduced with advanced standing*)

• Leadership essentials

• Dynamic communication

• Healthy ministries

The MPL incorporates

online and face-to-face

learning experiences. Each of these

experiences focuses on the participant’s current ministry setting, making this program

invaluable to the pastor in the field. In addition, the program utilizes a cohort model,

which creates a strong peer learning community to provide mutual support. It requires

just six visits to the Springfield campus over the course of two years.*

Financial aid is available.

*With appropriate undergraduate credits participants can complete the degree in two years (36 credits). Without this advanced standing, the program requires 48 credits.

“The MPL has profoundly impacted my life and ministry.

This program has enlarged my perspective of pastoral

leadership and deepened my understanding of scripture.

As a result of the tools and skills that the MPL has

provided, I now feel better equipped to lead and serve

in today’s challenging ministry contexts.”

DeLonn Rance (‘83) Director of Intercultural Doctoral Studies at AGTS

AGTS doctoral programs utilize a cohort model that brings participants together two to three times a year for one to two weeks at a time and allows participants to remain in their current ministry settings throughout the duration of the program.

PhD in Intercultural Studies

The PhD in Intercultural Studies (PhD/ICS) facilitates the development and academic certification of vocations in missiological and intercultural teaching and scholarship. The program recognizes the priority of the Holy Spirit’s person and power in accomplishing the mission of God. It creates an environment in which students can experience the kind of learning that connects them more deeply with the Spirit’s work in mission and allows them to focus their program and research on the application of integrative learning in missional praxis. This degree can be completed in five, two- to three-week sessions at AGTS over three years. Concentrations include:

•Missiological Studies •Christian Relief and Development

PhD in Biblical Interpretation and Theology

The PhD in Biblical Interpretation and Theology (PhD/BTH) is intended for exegetically and theologically knowledgable students desiring to prepare for scholarly theological leadership in the church. The program’s special emphasis on the integration of hermeneutics, exegesis and theology reflects the central role that theology plays in the life of the church. Our students engage in advanced analysis of reciprocal influence of hermeneutics, exegesis, biblical theology and systematic theology. The development of well-grounded biblical theologians in today’s church is all the more pivotal as the church interacts with a rapidly changing, vastly challenging global culture. This program consists of one-week sessions that are offered three times a year at AGTS. The degree takes an average of five and a half years to complete. Concentrations include:

•New Testament Interpretation and Biblical Theology •Old Testament Interpretation and Biblical Theology •Biblical Exegesis and Systematic Theology
