Save the Harbor/Save the Bay
is a non-profit, public interest harbor advocacy organization made up of thousands of citizens, as well as civic, corporate, cultural and community leaders and scientists, whose shared mission is to restore and protect Boston Harbor, Massachusetts Bay and the marine environment and share them with the public for everyone to enjoy. Save the Harbor/Save the Bay launched our Better Beaches Program in 2008 to help local communities and beaches friends groups create and sustain free events and activities on the region’s public beaches from Nahant to Nantasket, as recommended by the Metropolitan Beaches Commission, which we help lead and manage for the Legislature.Over the past 7 years, our community partners in Nahant, Lynn, Revere, Winthrop, East Boston, South Boston, Dorchester, Quincy, and Hull have leveraged $205,000 in small grants received from Save the Harbor/Save the Bay with $815,722 in cash and in-kind contributions from local government and small businesses for a total investment of $1,020,722 in 214 free events and programs for the region’s residents and visitors alike.
In 2014, Save the Harbor awarded $31,500 in small grants and additional organizational support to 18 groups in 9 beachfront communities and waterfront neighborhoods. These groups in turn leveraged our funds with $212,222 in cash and in-kind support from local government and businesses and more than 5,000 volunteer hours to support 44 free concerts, beach festivals, soccer tournaments, swims and sand sculpting competitions.
The funds to sustain the Better Beaches program come from the annual “Harpoon Helps Cupid Splash” pledge fundraiser, as well as Save the Harbor’s Better Beaches Program funding partners at Harpoon Brewery, JetBlue Airways, National Grid, Comcast Massachusetts, the Harold Whitworth Pierce Charitable Trust, Mass Bay Credit Union, Russo Marine, UBER, and P&G Gillette. Among the free events and activities we supported in 2014 were:

Save the Harbor also hosted our 4th Annual Youth Beach Bash and Splash, which brought more than 750 kids to M Street Beach in South Boston to celebrate clean water, and the Swim and Paddle for Boston Harbor, a one-mile, chip-timed competitive swim and paddle board race on one of the cleanest urban beaches in America.
In 2014, these 44 free beach events and programs attracted a diverse audience of 600,000 residents and visitors to Boston’s waterfront neighborhoods and beachfront communities, putting the cleaner water of Boston Harbor, Broad Sound and Massachusetts Bay to work for our community.
In 2015, with your help and the support of the Metropolitan Beaches
Commission and the Department of Conservation and Recreation, Save the Harbor’s Better Beaches Program will host or sponsor more free events and activities on our region’s public beaches – so stay tuned!
