Cloud infrastructure challenges faced by enterprises

To achieve lower TCO and enhance operational efficiency, carriers and enterprises are migrating existing IT infrastructure and applications into virtualized clouds. Besides the TCO savings of the internal IT, enterprises are benefiting a lot from the new business opportunities via cloud. Cloud being adopted in business application systems effectively shortens the service deployment cycle and simplifies infrastructure planning and management. But, the migration into cloud also creates some key challenges:

1. Commercial and technical challenges for building and managing a distributed, multi-vendor infrastructure. 2. Smooth migration to cloud data center without impact on existing service.

3. Different application scenarios require different infrastructure resources. 4. Supporting both fixed access and mobile access challenges cloud services.

FusionSphere is an open Cloud OS for different industries’ customers, who contains of virtualization platform and cloud management software. FusionSphere could helps enterprises and carriers integrate physical and virtual resources in data centers, optimize service platforms, construct public and private clouds, improve IT infrastructure value, and provide better customer services. July 2014, in the report "Magic Quadrant for x86 Server Virtualization Infrastructure” of Gartner, as the only new member in the report this year,Huawei was evaluated as “an up-and-coming product in emerging markets ". In September 2014, Huawei will launch the FusionSphere 5.0 which combined the open-source OpenStack framework deeply (Huawei has become the Gold member of OpenStack in November 2013), and built more Data Center virtualization capabilities (including SDS, SDN) and enhanced management automation capabilities, and could support Telecom NFV (Network Function Virtualization) Commercial trial. FusionSphere 5.0 will provide a more open, agile, reliable cloud OS for enterprise and carrier customers, and could help customers deploy server virtualization, private cloud, public cloud and hybrid cloud services on-demond. Enterprises can freely choose the 3rd-party cloud products and services through the standard OpenStack architecture and API interface, and make the deployment of cloud computing calmer and easier.

Proven Success

Huawei FusionSphere serves customers in 42 countries and regions around the globe, covering fields ranging from government and public utilities to telecommunications, energy, finance, transportation, health care, education, media, manufacturing and other industries. FusionSphere helps customers integrate and optimize their data centers and service platforms, improving system reliability and IT efficiency.

Open &

compatible

architecture

Based on OpenStack architecture, FusionSphere widely support 3rd party vendors’ server, storage, network, and security physical hardware and virtualization software products, and can provide more free and independent choice for customers. In the cloud service level, on the basis of OpenStack, FusionSphere provide data backup, disaster recovery, hot migration, resource scheduling across data centers, telecom cloud customized extensions, business resiliency scheduling, intelligent pipeline scheduling, distributed engines, physical resource pools extended services and so on. FusionSphere could better meet the demand of enterprises to deploy a private cloud, public cloud and hybrid cloud services.

Best

performance of

virtualization

FusionSphere has proven to be one of the most cost-effective virtualization platforms available today. FusionSphere employs a bare-metal virtualization engine that consumes less than 5% of physical CPU resources, yet this engine improves server utilization by up to 80% and reduces costs for IT infrastructure deployment by 30%. In the virtualization industry standard SPECvirt tests, FusionSphere had an outstanding performance. Distributed storage virtualization software has industry-leading performance, 1 TB data reconstruction time is less than 30 minutes, 10 times improvement of IOPS performance.

Secure,

reliable services

FusionSphere provides high availability and metropolitan area active-active Disaster Recovery (DR). These capabilities enable the backup and recovery of IT services that run on the FusionSphere platform to be backed up and recovered in the event of a disaster. Live migration allows the system to be upgraded or maintained without service interruption. And Huawei proprietary Health Advisor and Operation Recorder are able to provide operator early warning service and fast fault positioning for system exceptions.

Easy and

effective

operation

System operation is the key element that determines the level of virtualization system utilization efficiency for enterprise cloud computing. FusionSphere provides graphics-based application templates to implement one-click application deployment and more effective Operation and Maintenance (O&M). It could enable customers to create virtual data centers fast, simplifying cloud computing operations. FusionSphere’s open and integrated platform also offers Huawei's extended Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and also the OpenStack APIs as well, allowing customers to quickly deploy on-demand cloud services.

FusionSphere utilizes the layered structure, and consists of two main components:

• FusionCompute: the virtualization engine. The main ability is to virtualize hardware resources, sharing of resources reuse;

• FusionManager: the cloud management node. It manages the virtualized resources and hardware resources, and provides other management functions such as service management.

In addition, FusionSphere also offers FusionSphere OpenStack, FusionStorage, FusionNetwork, UlterVR( disaster recovery software) and HyperDP( backup software), etc.

FusionStorage is a distributed storage software, which be deployed on x86 server to organize all servers’ local hard disks into a virtual storage resource pool, and then to provide block storage capabilities. The advantages of FusionStorage are shown below:

Fully distributed architecture, distributed management of clusters, distributed HASH-data routing algorithms, distributed stateless head, distributed intelligence Cache, etc. All of those ensure that the whole storage system hasn’t the single point of failure.

Leading Distributed Architecture

Parallel fast fault reconstruction

Easy expansion

and ultra-large capacity

Computing and storage convergence deeply

High performance and high reliability

Load balance across all disks, and the data scattered storage avoid the hot-point. Efficient routing algorithms and distributed Cache technology ensure the high performance. FusionStorage support multiple data copies and each copy distribute in different servers / disks, any single hardware failure does not affect the business.

Data fragmentation was broken up in the resource pool, and after any hard disk failure, system could automatically parallel reconstruct the fault data in the whole resource pool range efficiently.

FusionStorage distributed stateless head can scale out, the storage could synchronize smooth expansion with server, and support ultra-large capacity.

FusionStorage deployed on the local hard disk, and organized each local hard disk of sever into a virtual pool of resources. So it naturally supports convergence of computing and storage devices.

Telecommunication services have gone global with cloud computing, intelligent pipes, and mobile Internet, requiring more telecom companies to focus on Iinformation and Ccommunication Ttechnology (ICT) services for enterprises. In 2011, Sichuan Telecom launched the Cloud Sea project to develop its ICT services. This project uses Huawei FusionSphere, which integrates all existing infrastructure into one cloud computing resource pool, enabling Sichuan Telecom to provide cloud desktops to internal employees, integrate the service platform, and provide Virtual Private Server (VPS) services to external customers.

This project helped Sichuan Telecom increase its server utilization efficiency from 15% to 85% and shorten service rollout time by 80%. All resources can now be shared and managed in a unified way, while reducing power consumption significantly.

China Fujian Province Administration for Industry and Commerce:

Huawei cloud computing and government affairs virtualization

The Administration for Industry and Commerce of Fujian is the provincial agency responsible for market supervision and management. The administration has 511 branches throughout the province. Huawei helped the administration build a cloud data center that includes two local disaster recovery centers in Fuzhou city and an inter-city backup center in Sanming city. Using FusionSphere, Huawei deployed virtual desktops and separated the administration’s external and internal networks on the service platform. With resource virtualization and unified resource scheduling, the solution greatly improves the agency’s efficiency. Compared with the budget what service platform construction without virtualization, this project reduced construction cost by 30%.
