parts of a whole

Lesson Objectives:

• Identify, write, and read fractions for parts of a whole.

Fractions are numbers that represent how many parts of a whole there are. An example of a fractions is

D

. The top part of the fraction is called the numerator, which tells the number of

parts being considered. The bottom part of a fraction is called the denominator, which tells the total number of parts in the whole.

Example: A pizza is cut into 8 pieces, and you and your friends have eaten 3 of the pieces altogether. How much of the pizza has been eaten?

Step 1: Draw a circle with eight sections. Shade three sections (pieces).

Step 2: Write a fraction.

how many pieces were eaten = 3

total number of pieces = 8

locate fractions on a number line

You can represent fractions using models. For example, the shaded portion in the model on the right represents the fraction ⅔.

You can also use a number line to represent fractions.

This number line represents a unit of length that can be broken into equal parts.

This unit (number line) can be broken into 3 equal parts. (Count the number of sections, NOT the number of tick marks.)

Therefore, the dot labeled “a” represents ⅓ of the unit. The dot labeled “b” represents of the

unit. And, the dot on the number “1” represents

E

of the unit, or 1 whole.
