Learning Activities

Introduction to New Material

Explain

 In life we all make mistakes, and sometimes we need a chance to start over. Teacher says: This year is your year to start fresh. Every year I try to start fresh and do a better job then I did the year before. When you start over it is called a clean slate. I do not even want to know what you did at your old school. Please don’t tell me how many fights you were in, if you were suspended, if you got attitude with your teacher, because in my mind you are perfect. I already love you, and I don’t want to hear stories like that, because we are starting fresh today.

 Clean slate is a fresh start- no one knows who you were at your old school, your mistakes, if you were good at reading and math.

 All humans make mistakes, some people learn from them, some people keep making them.

Read Aloud

Teacher: Mark is an example of someone who learned from his mistake and made it better. I learned from my mistake and made it better, but some people do not learn from their mistakes and keep making them over and over. This is like the kid who talks in the hallway everyday, even after they got grounded at home and punished at school. This is the kid who keeps not doing homework and getting F’s.

 Starting fresh w/ a clean slate means- (Mark)

-decide what you weren’t proud of (bad grades/ disrespect)

-think about what you are proud of ( I am smart, I know I am nice, I am a good brother)

-what are your goals for this school year (do my homework, be on honor roll and pass)

-what will you do to meet those goals ( I will not get on bench…)

Guided Practice

Teacher: Something that is true about all humans is that we all make mistakes. The difference is, some humans learn from their mistakes, and get better. Some

humans, just keep making the same mistakes over and over. One example is Michael Vick (show Atlanta falcons pic). He was an awesome football player. He made a mistake of hurting dogs (next pic), and went to jail (next pic). Now, he is getting a second chance to play for the Eagles. Since, he got a second chance, he is very grateful, and he is making changes in his life, so he does not make the mistake again. Did Michael Vick learn from his mistake or keep making it? What if Michael Vick had not learned from his mistake? On a poster write.

1.) What was the mistake? He did things that were against the law. 2.) What was the consequence? He lost his career and had to go to jail. 3.) What is his clean slate?

Have students share answers in pairs, then out loud.

Here are some scenarios: Tell me if the person learned, from their mistake or did

not learn?

Now each of you has a scenario where a student needs a clean slate. 1.) What mistakes do they need to get rid of?

2.) What should they try to do different to keep from making the mistake again?

Have students share.

What Happened? How did they start fresh?

Directions: After we read the mistake, write if you think the person, learned or did not learn from their mistake.

Sean Carter has been making c’s and F’s for two years, he doesn’t do his homework. As a result he failed 5th grade. This year always does all his work and tries his best to learn.

Sasha Fierce disrespects her

teachers. The teachers call her mom and she gets grounded at home. She also doesn’t learn because she is always mad. Sasha decides she is going to keep giving people attitude, because she wants to. She is still not learning, and cannot go to the school dance.

Ramona always fights with her sisters,
