Title: PATHWAYS TO 1916: TEACHING THE RISING – NATIONAL AND LOCAL HISTORY RESOURCES FOR THE CLASSROOM

Title: BRIGIT’S GARDEN: AN ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCE IN OUR COMMUNITY Tutor: Jenny Beale, Dolores Keegan, Leanne Szklarzewicz

The objectives of the course are:

- To equip teachers with the knowledge, personal interest and methodologies necessary for effective learning and teaching of key strands in the SESE curriculum relating to the

environment and energy, and to foster a sense of personal and community responsibility for our natural heritage.

- To promote a cross-curricular approach to the teaching and learning of science through integration with history, literacy (English/Irish), numeracy and arts and crafts. To explore the rich connections between nature and the environment and Celtic traditions relating to the seasons and native flora and fauna in the following areas of the curriculum:

Science: Habitat investigations and recordings in key habitats: woodland, pond, meadow and

gardens. Investigating mini-beasts, identifying native species. Energy investigations with renewable sources of heat and light.

History: Exploring the Celtic festivals and the folklore relating to trees and plants.

Mathematics: Developing a variety of mathematical skills in an environmental context,

including problem-solving, counting, measuring and estimating.

Literacy: Learning Irish words and phrases relating to the course content. Using discussion,

story, descriptive writing, poetry and Haiku to develop skills in English in relation to communicating about nature and the experience of being in natural environments.

Art and craft: To use art and craft, especially with natural materials, as a vehicle for exploring

aspects of the environment.

School Self Evaluation: Teachers will begin to reflect on their work in this subject area and the

learning their students achieve. Teachers will look at gathering evidence about the teaching and learning processes in this subject area, the analysing of evidence and conclusions and judgments about their strengths and weaknesses.

Title: AISTEAR – PLAY, LITERACY AND NUMERACY (INFANTS) Tutor: Jacqueline Curley

Looking for new ideas for teaching literacy and maths in a fun way? Or perhaps, thinking about teaching through play? If so, then register for this action-packed Summer Course which has been designed by the Network of Education Centres in collaboration with the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA).

This course explores Aistear: the Early Childhood Curriculum Framework (NCCA, 2009) and provides lots of practical ideas for using Aistear and especially the play guidelines, in your infant classroom. Take a look at other teachers’ resources for play and find out how they plan for, resource, support and assess children’s learning through play. Gather new ideas for developing young children’s oral language, emergent writing and mathematical learning.

This course will also link closely with the new Primary Language Curriculum for Junior Infants – Second Class

You will also hear about a variety of resources available on the NCCA’s website which could be useful in your school’s work on self-evaluation and improvement.

Title: FIRST STEPS READING Tutor: Paula O’Connor

Content

First Steps is an intensive course for the professional development of teachers in the area of Literacy. This in-depth course focuses on First Steps Reading, with integration into First Steps Writing. Participants will examine best practice in relation to developing various aspects of good reading skills in children, including reading genres, comprehension strategies and literacy across the curriculum. This course looks at how to develop the reader from the beginner level, through to the proficient reader, therefore making the course suitable for teachers of all class levels. Emphasis is also placed on methods of Assessment, as recommended in the National Assessment Guidelines (2005).

The course also focuses on long term planning, and the implementation of the training provided, to ensure that teachers are supported in developing and continuing new found skills and knowledge.

 A substantial amount of song repertoire and supporting material in both rhythmic patterns and rhymes. Material to be chosen from the singing rascals program and from Kodaly 333 along with additional material from Karen and folk music resources.

 An introduction to solfa as a teaching resource

 A grounding in the philosophy and teaching practice of Kodaly, Curwen and Dalcroze  Understanding stick notation and dictation

Title: COLOURSTRINGS INTERMEDIATE COURSE Tutor: Karen Mc Kenzie

Content

Phase 2 colourstrings is structured to develop further the skills learned at phase 1 level. Colourstrings repertoire will be further explored to develop core skills. The course will also include:

 The development of Intonation.

 Increased levels of solfa training and fluency in hand signs.  Quality of singing phrasing and musicality.

 Development of inner hearing and memory.  Two Part Hearing.

 Improvisation.

 Working and playing with form and structure.  Ensemble singing and Conducting.

 Rhythmic Singing

 Reading Solfa from the Staff.

A further development of musical stick notation, and an understanding of how it develops into full notation, is given along historical guidelines.

Music dictation, both rhythmic and pitch is developed further using stick notation techniques

Assessment and evaluation techniques are further developed to include aspects of child psychology and non-musical pedagogy.

Title: LIFT OFF TO LITERACY Tutor: Sr. Helen Diviney

A minimum of 3 teachers from each school is required.

Content

 Theory and practice of guided reading and guided writing.

 Developing awareness of an interactive model of teaching reading as advocated by Rumelhart et al, 1986.

 Participants will be involved in a collaborative professional learning community which will employ a range of methodologies which will include: observation, mentoring, coaching, modeling, feedback and cognitive structuring.

Teachers will:

 Receive training in assessment techniques: The Observation Survey of Early Literacy Achievement (Clay, 2002)

 Deepen their understanding of early literacy acquisition.

Title: GAELIC GAMES: ENHANCING THE DELIVERY OF PE AND INTEGRATION WITH OTHER SUBJECTS

 To highlight the opportunities and to show the benefits of a cross curricular approach to teaching by using the theme of Gaelic games through the GAA Céim ar Aghaidh/Step Ahead resource including the Céim ar Aghaidh interactive DVD Rom to allow teachers to implement ICT within their teaching methodology .

 To highlight the importance of promoting a healthy lifestyle to children.

 To promote enjoyment of, and positive attitudes towards, physical activity and its contribution to lifelong health-related fitness, thus preparing the child for the active and purposeful use of leisure time.

 To enable teachers to develop an understanding within pupils of fair play and team spirit through participation and competition.

 To enable teachers to adopt safe practices in all physical activities.

 To highlight the opportunity of integrating Games into the Gaeilge lesson through the use of skill cards “as gaeilge”.

 To improve the confidence and competence of teachers in PE pedagogy.

 Identification, exploration and demonstration of the approaches and methodologies contained in the curriculum relating to these strands.

 Teachers will have an increased commitment to the approaches used therein.

 To highlight the opportunity to integrate PE through the curriculum with emphasis on the Numeracy & Literacy programmes by using the GAA Céim ar Aghaidh/Step Ahead Programme.  To appreciate the importance of differentiation to cater for children with special educational

needs.

 To identify methods of assessment appropriate to Physical Education.  Discussion and implementation of assessment.

 Teachers will be prepared to include assessment as part of their programme.

Title: USING SCRATCH TO DEVELOP NUMERACY Tutor: Nuala Dalton & Mark Finlay

This revised summer course for 2015 from PDST TiE develops the use of Scratch 2.0 as a programming language in the primary classroom. The course includes a wide range of short classroom practice focused videos demonstrating Scratch being integrated in daily teaching activities at a range of class levels. Each module includes discussion of practical classroom applications of Scratch programming and makes specific reference to the use of Scratch as a teaching tool in developing, supporting and extending children’s application of key mathematical concepts and skills. By means of a range of tutor led group activities, participants will investigate how they might incorporate Scratch across other curricular areas. Finally, other key areas discussed over the duration of the course include the development of safe internet practices in the school environment, finding and selecting good quality teaching material online and planning for e-learning practices in my school.

Title: USING TABLETS DIVICES FOR LITERACY AND NUMERACY Tutor: Dara Mannion & Terry Kavanagh

Content

A revamped and revised summer course for 2015 from PDST TiE centered on the purposeful use of tablet technologies, namely the iPad, and how it can be used to support teaching and learning in the Irish primary classroom. Firstly, teachers will examine the key educational and whole-school considerations in the deployment of tablet technologies through a range of participant led tasks and activities. Participants will explore areas such as developing literacy and numeracy lessons with tablet devices, investigating accessibility and SEN practices in Irish classrooms before planning for the possible integration of tablet devices across the wider curriculum. The course will also explore how tablet devices can be used to develop whole school assessment practices by developing a portfolio of sample teaching and learning resources for all class levels over the week. Finally, the development of safer internet practices and whole school planning for e-learning will be also be prioritised throughout the course.

Title: USING ICT FOR LITERACY & NUMERACY IN JUNIOR CLASSES Tutor: Éilis Treacy & Eileen Treacy

Content

This revised summer course for 2015 engages teachers in a hands on approach to using ICT in the junior classroom. Each module includes practical use of online resources, tools and programmes to promote ICT integration so as to develop and support children's learning in literacy and numeracy. Each module refers to classroom based examples of differentiation so as to cater for our pupils’ varying learning abilities and SEN needs across the curriculum. Many modules also provide participants with opportunities to investigate project based learning as promoted by the Aistear framework. Finally, relevant classroom based examples of collaborative and cooperative work in infant classrooms will be explored throughout the week by all participants as they plan for the use of ICT to support teaching, learning and assessment in their own classrooms.

Course Content:

A new hands-on, practical course for 2015 from PDST TiE introducing teachers at all class levels to ways in which ICT can be easily integrated into daily teaching practices. The course will investigate the use of a range of literacy, numeracy and wider curriculum related websites and resources which can add to active learning in the primary classroom. Over the duration of the course teachers will be guided through the process of creating a wide range of teaching, learning and assessment based digital resources which they can use in their own classrooms. Other key areas of course content to be discussed and developed include the importance of safer internet practices in the school environment, finding and selecting good quality educational content online, developing whole school assessment practices through the use of ICT and finally planning for e-learning practices in your school.

Title: THE READING AND WRITING PROCESS USING ICT Tutor: Colin Murray & Damien Stenson

Course Content:

This revised summer course for 2015 from PDST TiE will investigate a wide range of easy to use, practical online resources which can build and foster pupils' skills in reading comprehension, oral language, writing and vocabulary at all class levels. It will also explore how ICT can be used to support and develop key elements of literacy by developing a digital portfolio of sample teaching, learning and assessment resources for all class levels over the week. Each module makes reference to classroom based examples of using ICT to support differentiation so as to cater for our pupils’ varying learning abilities and SEN needs. Other relevant areas discussed during this course include building safer internet practices in my school, integrating technologies in literacy intervention programs as well as planning for e-learning on a whole school level.

Title: FíS: FILM-MAKING TO DELIVER LITERACY IN THE CLASSROOM Tutor: Siobhan Doherty & Michael Mc Namara

Course Content:

This summer course will introduce teachers to the skills involved in the process of film-making and how it can support and develop literacy skills. Each module is structured to encourage a hands-on approach to learning. Each module will begin with an exemplar before participants work hands-on a range of directed tasks and activities through the use of a variety of film-making technologies (hand-held camera devices, software,) as tools to develop pupils’ literacy skills. All modules finish with a group discussion on classroom implementation as well as the sharing of ideas, strategies and good practice. Over the duration of the course, participants will explore how the process of film-making can be used to develop relevant resources to enhance teaching and learning in literacy across the curriculum.
