Market Overview

MARKET OVERVIEW

Plumbing Fittings

The plumbing fittings market is forecast to increase 3.1 percent per annum to $5.8 billion in 2005. Plumbing fittings encompass a broad range of products which control and connect plumbing fixtures. Included are sink fittings, single lever controls, bathtub and shower fittings, and other plumbing fittings. Demand will be driven by residential repair and improvement expenditures, in particular for kitchen and bathroom remodeling. Replacement demand will benefit from the fact that many plumbing fittings contain moving parts that can wear over time, leading to a lifetime that is often shorter than that of the fixture to which they are attached. Moreover, while demand for fittings is related to demand for the associate fixtures, plumbing fittings are a design element in their own right, and aesthetic reasons can also drive aftermarket demand. In addition, product improvements such as leak-resistant and universally accessible designs will boost demand through 2005. As compared to the previous historical period, however, plumbing fitting advances will moderate due to a slowdown in new housing, and office and commercial construction activity.

Fitting shipments are projected to rise 2.2 percent annully to $4.9 billion in 2005. Net imports of plumbing fittings will increase over eight percent per annum to account for the remainder of demand. Rising imports are expected to originate from foreign manufacturers, especially in Asia, with lower production costs. These importers produce fittings for economy-minded do-it-yourself repairs. US plumbing fixture manufacturers also face increasing competition from European firms looking to expand their niche in high-end fittings.

INDUSTRY STRUCTURE

Plumbing Fixtures - Private Company Characteristics

The leading private companies, like their public counterparts, typically offer a relatively wide range of plumbing fixture products, manufactured from a variety of materials. For example, Briggs Plumbing Products, a $140 million manufacturer, offers metal and vitreous china fixtures such as toilets, bidets, urinals, lavatories, sinks, bathtubs and whirlpool bathtubs. However, the majority of private plumbing fixture manufacturers are much smaller firms, generally with corporate sales of under $25 million. These companies typically specialize in a narrower range of plumbing fixtures, which are often made from a limited number of materials. For example, $10 million Hamilton Bathware only produces gelcoat fiberglass and acrylic bathtubs, whirlpools, showers and bathtub/shower units. Similarly, Vance Industries, a $20 million firm, specializes in metal sinks. Also, smaller private companies are much less likely to produce both plumbing fixtures and fittings than larger manufacturers. However, some smaller firms are more diversified, including Jason International, a $25 million producer of whirlpool and soaking baths, shower products and faucets.

A number of private companies produce other types of plumbing fixtures beyond the traditional baths, showers, sinks and/or toilets. This broad category includes spas, drinking fountains and portable chemical toilets. Private companies participating in this product segment range from large firms with hundreds of millions of dollars in sales to companies with sales of less than $10 million annually. For example, privately-held spa producers include Baja Products, California Acrylic Industries, Catalina Spas, Hydro Spa, Marquis, May Manufactur-ing, Plastic Development Company and Royal Spa Manufacturing. These firms range in sales from $5 million to $160 million. Many of these companies concentrate solely on spa production (e.g., Marquis and Plastic Development Company), while others, such as California Acrylic Industries and Hydro Spa, are more diversified. Participation in this relatively small segment of the industry, as well as in related areas such as whirlpool tubs and hot tubs, is high because these products offer some of the fastest growth prospects in the plumbing fixtures market. Also included in the other plumbing fixture category are companies such as Elkay Manufacturing, a $480 million producer of drinking fountains, among

Report Highlights

Private companies in the $9.1 billion US plumbing

products market are active in the manufacture of both

fixtures and fittings, with some integrated into the

produc-tion of both.

One private manufacturer had total plumbing products

sales over $1 billion in 2000 and was one of the leading

producers of both fixtures and fittings.

An additional eight private firms each have plumbing

fixture and/or fitting product sales of at least $100 million.

Private plumbing product firms have been engaged in

merger and acquisition activity both as targets and

acquirers, with larger players increasingly looking to

expand their international operations.

plumb-ing products manufacturplumb-ing facilities, with over 175, while
