Physical Security
BDS’ SAS70 Type 2 data centers are designed to host mission critical servers and computer systems, with fully redundant subsystems (cooling, power, network links, storage, etc.) and compartmentalized security zones controlled by biometric access control methods.
Data Resilience
BDS uses purely diskless processing engines, which ensures all data is centrally stored on a Storage Area Network (SAN). SANs are easier to protect and secure, and offer much greater resilience than traditional hard-drives because they store data, access multiple drives in a SAN for resilience and speed.
Electronic Access to Services
All of BDS access points to services are encrypted through the use of SSL (secure socket layer) 128 bit encryptions. This provides encryption for all data which is being sent to and from BDS network, such as email, desktop data and passwords. For desktops, a connection broker is used to provide encryption through RSA RC4 for key strokes and screen data.
Customers may also request VPN (virtual private network) access to a collection of services such as Hosted Desktops. This is a cost option, but can be provided with PPTP or Cisco VPN with a permanent point tunnel or dial-up VPN.
Electronic Intrusion Detection and Logging
To protect data and security, BDS uses a TripWireTM intrusion
detection system (IDS). IDS is used to log and look for unusual network and user behavior within the BDS internal network. IDS is deployed on both internal and external networks and has a number of automatic triggers to alert engineers of unusual behavior and to isolate potential problems.
BDS employs a policy to log user access to any of the services such as Hosted Desktop and Exchange, and stores this information securely as part of our data retention policy.
Staff Change Control and Access Monitoring
In order to monitor BDS access to systems, all engineers that are provided with access to potentially sensitive information will have passed a data competency check. Prior to being hired, all staff members are subject to a background check, and must have no criminal record. Access to systems and data is only granted to experienced engineering staff through director-level permission. Any changes to data, systems or infrastructure must be logged with change control software; both to ensure that reversal of policies can be instigated, and to track issues.
User and Storage Separation
Access to user data is managed by ACL (Access Control Lists) which designate specific user-level permissions to the various services and data. This is managed via internal networks that reside within the BDS infrastructure. Each customer’s data is stored in a separate LUN (logical unit number) on our Storage Area Network. This is a grouping of storage that is isolated in a partition for a specific user or service. Through ACL only the designated users will have access to read and write to this LUN. Typically ACL are managed securely via LDAP or Active Directory.
Data Ownership
You can be confident that your data is safe and will always be available to you, and only you. We take full responsibility for ensuring that proper security measures are in place to protect your data. Customers have access to their own private data at any time, which they can copy, backup and store themselves, if necessary.
At all times the data stored within BDS services is the property of the customer. In the event of service termination, the data can be provided to the customer on DVD or other Portable Digital Media. This data will only be kept for a maximum of 7 days while it is filtered out of the backup archives.

Data Archive Retention Policies
Backups are kept as part of BDS Archive Retention Policy (ARP). Data residing in the Archive Store will be deleted in accordance with a pre-determined policy. The standard approach for managing deletions is to have an ARP set at the time the initial backup is taken. No data can be deleted from the Archive Store by customers before the retention period in the policy has expired. Retention policies can be used to meet data protection and email retention compliance requirements. As part of our range of “IT on demand” services, BDS now deploys a highly secure Cloud Storage Platform. Our platform offers SSL file transfer encryption and 256 bit AES encryption in storage. Since you only pay for the resources you use on a monthly subscription basis, it is more cost efficient and you can scale your capacity up or down as needed. Our Cloud storage service integrates seamlessly with our other hosted IT services such as Hosted Desktops, Hosted Exchange, Hosted SharePoint, etc. to provide a single computing environment characterized by its interoperability and efficiency.
