Croydon Health Services NHS Trust has two hospitals. Our main site in the north of Croydon has a full Accident and Emergency department serving around 400 people a day, a maternity unit, wards and operating theatres. As a district general hospital it offers the full range of in-patient and outpatient clinical services, specialty clinics and a day surgery unit, as well as working closely with nearby specialist units to support patients with more complex conditions. In addition, the recently refurbished Purley War Memorial Hospital is bringing more outpatient services to residents in the south of our borough. The introduction of our new electronic patient record system has resulted in more efficient ways of working and improved the experience of patients using our services.

OuR COMMuNItY seRvICes

Our community health services care for patients of all ages, out of hospital and close to home. From the very young to the very old our nursing, therapy and specialist children’s services reach every corner of the borough and every local resident. With increasing integration across our services, the line between ‘acute’ and ‘community’ is becoming increasingly blurred. Our aim is to give our patients a seamless experience, care for them when and where it’s comfortable for them and work closely with social care colleagues to ensure that health and care needs are equally addressed. A career with us will put you at the forefront of this drive. You can see a full list of our services at: www.croydonhealthservices.nhs.uk/ our-services/

The Trust has a dedicated recruitment team to offer you advice and guidance through the recruitment process. If you’d like to join the team, there’s a number of places you can look for opportunities.

All jobs at the Trust are advertised on our website at: www.croydonhealthservices. nhs.uk/join-the-team/

Jobs can also be found on NHS Jobs: www.jobs.nhs.uk

Some roles can also be found in local

newspapers (and their websites) or in specialist

publications and journals. We are also keen to hear from ambitious nurses looking to progress their career, even if the opportunity you are looking for is not currently advertised. If you have an enquiry regarding recruitment or vacancies at Croydon Health Services, you can also contact the team on 020 8401 3342. It takes a special kind of person to be a Croydon

Nurse. Croydon Nurses respond to the everyday

challenges of a modern health service with

energy and compassion, putting patients first

and developing their own skills to become a

better nurse every day.

Croydon Health Services has many opportunities in nursing, offers structured education and support, can offer flexible working and the chance for ambitious people to shine.

Croydon Health Services employs over 3,500 staff working across 16 sites within the borough; approximately one third of our staff are nurses. As an integrated care organisation we always have great employment opportunities for all types of nurse, whether you are newly qualified, looking for a change of direction, moving from overseas, relocating within the UK, looking for promotion or seeking to return to nursing.

Newly qualified staff nurses (Band 5)

Croydon Health Services is a great place to start your career as a nurse. As a district general hospital we offer the opportunity to get solid experience in an environment that supports your development as a nurse, with a wide range of clinical areas to get involved in.

You will also have access to our ‘Discover’ programme – a unique rotation opportunity which will help to pump-prime your nursing career. Experienced band five nurses will enjoy the challenge of working in Croydon and the ‘big-family’ atmosphere that the Trust has. Croydon has a young, diverse population which brings a unique richness to the borough. This makes for a great nursing experience. Our nurses are as diverse as the people they look after and our nursing family includes those from Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece, Ireland, Eastern Europe, the Philippines, India, Australia, the Caribbean and Africa.

Rotate through three departments, with support from your own mentor.

Croydon nurses are inquisitive, keen to have new experiences and explore all of the options available to them. There are many different opportunities in nursing, and sometimes it’s difficult to know which particular area is going to be the most appealing in the future.

At Croydon Health Services we offer band five nurses the opportunity to enrich their nursing career through our unique ‘Discover’ programme – a rotation scheme which gives Croydon nurses the opportunity to experience lots of different disciplines and gain invaluable experience for the future before deciding which route to take.

In their first 18 months at the Trust, ‘Discover’ nurses can choose three different placement opportunities, each lasting six months, to gain hands on experience in that area.

In addition to this, nurses receive additional education and development which counts towards their nursing portfolio. As an integrated Trust placement opportunities can be in hospital or community services or a combination of both. You’ll also be part of an energetic team of other ‘Discover’ nurses who get together to share ideas, learn from each other (and have fun).

Taking part in the programme will give you opportunities to learn, that few other NHS Trusts can offer and help you to discover the right nursing route for you.

Places on the ‘Discover’ programme are limited. If you’d like to take part, please mention the programme in your application and discuss it at your interview.

More information about career development for nurses at all stages is included in our separate nursing career prospectus.

Inspired by the care her premature daughter received in hospital Nancy Fraser decided to become a community nurse in Croydon. Through dedication and a passion to care, she is now a clinical service lead in the Health Visiting service, helping to keep other people’s children fit and well.

“When my daughter was born she spent six months in hospital and she’s here today because of the skill and compassion of doctors and nurses. This inspired me to change career and join their ranks, so I could make the same difference to other families. As a service lead in Health Visiting I’m rewarded every day by the dedication of the team and the difference we make to local people.”

It’s a vibrant, diverse place and there’s a new challenge every day. It’s big enough to be interesting, but small enough to progress quickly.”

there are lots of opportunities for experienced nurses

at the trust, whether this is in our hospitals or in our

community services.

We are always looking for our next generation of nurse leaders and often have great opportunities for band five and six charge nurses and sisters.

If you are an experienced nurse or have specialist nursing skills but can’t see the job for you on our website then get in touch. We value experience and our senior nursing team would be happy to talk to you, review your CV and discuss opportunities with us.

The Trust has over 80 specialist nurses and nurse consultants, who work closely with medical teams but have a high degree of autonomy in how they manage their caseload and working lives.

Band six and band seven nurses are the leaders of the future and Croydon offers excellent opportunities to develop some essential skills. If you’re a nurse looking to make your next move, then get in touch for a discussion - even if you can’t see an appropriate role advertised.

Ajay’s career at Croydon Health Services is

characterised by a roll-call of inspiring nurses who pushed him to be the best. His aunt, a mental health nurse, encouraged him to become a hospital volunteer and whilst on placement another nurse recognised his talent and helped him to take his first steps towards becoming the nurse he is today.

“I joined the Trust as a volunteer in 1995 and over the years my education has taken me from healthcare assistant to nurse, to matron and now to a specialist neurology nurse. At every step I’ve been encouraged, coaxed and inspired by some amazing colleagues who’ve been the role models every nurse needs. When I started out I learned from others, but through support and development the Trust has turned me into a nursing leader of the future.”

Croydon health services is a great place

to return to nursing. We know that the

experience gained from years of nursing

cannot be replaced and are keen to welcome

nurses who have taken a break and feel it’s

time to come back.

Returning nurses will find a welcome in Croydon, the opportunity to work full or part-time and also the chance to retrain. For those who’ve taken an extended break and need some retraining, the ‘Return to Nursing’ programme offers support and financial incentives. The Trust runs hospital and community health services and anyone wanting to make the change will find lots of opportunities.

If you want to return to nursing, we can offer you a placement and the training you need. Our close links with local colleges and universities ensure that your journey back to nursing is a smooth one. Opportunities to return to nursing are advertised throughout the year in preparation for twice-yearly college intakes. Currently nurses receive around £600 on top of their course fees.

You can choose part-time or full-time training, which will usually take between three and six months to complete. Each local university runs the programme slightly differently but in general, you can expect:

l your course fees paid

l additional financial support towards travel,

childcare and book costs

l your clinical placement to be supernumerary l theory and clinical-based training

l access to a mentor

l preceptorship support once you have

gained employment

l simulation techniques to practice skills.

We are also keen to hear from nurses who have recently taken a career break or have retired and do not need the additional support offered by formal ‘return to nursing’ courses. Our flexible approach means that your valuable skills can still contribute to patient care on a part-time basis or as a member of our nursing bank (see page 23).

“The care we give to babies and their families is so important and when I retired I realised I missed the reward of the job and the special relationship we build with families” said Sandy

“It’s also great being part of the team,”

adds Kathy, “if I didn’t come to work I’d miss the life-long friends I’ve made at the Trust. It’s important to stay busy in retirement and returning to nursing is the perfect way to do it!”

we have opportunities for experienced nurses, looking to make

a career change and will support education and development in

high-demand areas.

If you’re looking to make a change or would like to explore another nursing profession, we can support your transition. For example, you may wish to try moving from hospital to community nursing. We can support this move, provide an introduction programme and if it is for you we can support you to train as a district nurse, school nurse or health visitor.

Croydon Health Services is an integrated Trust, providing services in hospitals and in the community. This makes moving between the two easier than in many other Trusts. there’s never been a better time to be a midwife

Following the £630,000 refurbishment of our maternity unit and the gold-standard numbers of midwives caring for our local mums, you’ll be joining a motivated, caring team who will give you all of the support you need to develop your career, however long you’ve been practicing. Croydon was one of the first Trusts to employ a consultant midwife, who alongside our dedicated preceptor midwife, supports and develops the skills of the whole team. The midwife-led birth centre provides a modern,

A recent CQC inspection gave a ringing endorsement of the service, “Maternity and children’s services were caring, safe and well-led. Mothers, parents and other relatives were largely positive about the care they had received, felt supported to make choices, and were kept informed about what was going on” CQC, Sept 2013

But when I saw the work of a midwife on TV and the difference they make, I decided I wanted to do the same. I love telling people I’m a Croydon midwife – it makes me very proud.” “Croydon was a wonderful place to do my midwife education – so much so that on qualifying I wanted to join the team. There’s lots of opportunity for career progression, it’s a friendly place and we get to work with some of the most interesting communities in London”

For most, a career in nursing starts with three years

education which combines classroom teaching and clinical

placements in the trust.

Croydon Health Services’ close relationships with local

universities makes us a great partner in nurse education. Nurses who train with us, now get a dedicated career support mentor to give advice and help them plan their career. This is in addition to the guidance and support they receive from colleagues during their varied placements.

We invest heavily in nurses of the future and believe that all of our successful students should become part of our workforce. Student nurses who shine during their placement with us are automatically invited to join our nursing team and as a result many newly qualified nurses stay with the Trust during the first years of their career.

In addition to the ‘Discover’ programme, our new nurses are encouraged to develop their skills and many progress quickly to further challenges within the organisation.

“I knew I wanted to work in Croydon early in my nurse training. During my placements everyone was so supportive and I received lots of encouragement. It’s a great team to be part of.
