The Lactation Center Boutique at St. Francis Medical Center was specially designed to support
the needs of new moms and moms-to-be. The Boutique specializes in breast-feeding support,
breast pump rentals, nursing bra fittings, and items centered on making breast-feeding
comfortable and convenient.
As Colorado Springs’ only LACTATION CENTER, we offer the expertise of our
International Board Certified Lactation Consultants, product specialists and certified bra fitters.
The Lactation Center Boutique truly is a one-stop service. No matter what your breast-feeding
needs are, we can fully assist you and your baby to ensure you have the best breast-feeding
experience possible.

PREADMISSION PROGRAM
At St. Francis Medical Center we know that having a baby is a very special time in your life. With outstanding OB/GYNs, registered nurses and board certified lactation consultants, you’ll leave here feeling prepared for what’s to come. A preadmission appointment gives you an opportunity to talk to an experienced Birth Center nurse, share your birth preferences and ask questions about your upcoming birth experience. The visit is designed with you, your support person and family in mind.
WHEN YOU PREREGISTER:
• You eliminate the need to register at the admissions office. • Your consent for hospital admission and treatment will be signed. • Your medical history will be reviewed and documented.
• You will complete your baby’s birth certificate information—except for name. • You will have an opportunity to discuss your desired birthing
experience with a Birth Center nurse. Any questions or concerns will be addressed and you will receive information on topics of importance to you. • You will pay any co-pay due for your upcoming hospitalization as required by your insurance plan and insurance information will be reviewed with you.

FERTILITYCARE
(NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING TO

A program based on the Creighton Model of FertilityCare, which is extensively researched and designed to help couples either achieve or avoid pregnancy. Learn about the male and female reproductive system and how to identify natural times of fertility and infertility. Taught by a certified FertilityCare Practitioner.

At the Introductory class, learn details about the program, have your questions answered and consider if the program will meet your needs. If you are ready, you can purchase your book/chart/stamps and begin right away. If not, you can always contact the practitioner and begin at a later date when the time is right. Private follow-up sessions with the practitioner are necessary to fully learn and utilize the program effectively. Charges may be covered by some insurance plans.

Whether your labor and delivery experience includes interventions such as episiotomy, physician breaking the bag of water, induction of labor, IV infusions, etc., is determined by your physician’s orders and plan of care for you. Fetal monitoring is routine for all laboring mothers for a minimum of 20 minutes per hour (this is the national standard). OUTPATIENT APPOINTMENTS
A private appointment with a lactation consultant for breast-feeding problem management after hospital discharge when:

AFTER DELIVERY
At St. Francis Medical Center our after delivery care for stable newborns includes: • SKIN to SKIN care
Babies are placed skin to skin with the mother after delivery (if the parents are willing and baby stable) regardless of feeding choice. The goal is for the baby to remain skin to skin until the first breastfeeding or for the first hour. Skin to Skin enhances stabilization of the baby’s vital signs, temperature and promotes breast-feeding behaviors. Newborn care, including the bath, will be done in the mother’s room after one hour of age. If you choose, visitors can be restricted so parents and newborn can enjoy a private “golden hour” after delivery to become acquainted.
• ROOMING IN
After birth, stable babies remain with their parents in the mother’s hospital room. Rooming In gives parents the opportunity to learn and respond to feeding cues and become comfortable with infant care prior to going home.

INFANT MASSAGE
Massaging your baby enhances bonding and is a special time to share soothing skin-to-skin contact. In this two-part class you will learn strokes that will relax your baby and encourage restful sleep as well as strokes to relieve symptoms of stress and colic. Massage is a wonderful way to communicate with your growing baby through nurturing touch. Baby should be at least three weeks old when class begins.

MOTHER’S MILK BANK
Got milk? You can give the gift that only a mother can give— breast milk. Many infants have special health needs and require feedings of breast milk in order to thrive. The purpose of the Mother’s Milk Bank is to screen, collect, store and dispense human milk by prescription only to these needy little ones. The program is managed by Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center in Denver, and St. Francis Medical Center is the local milk collection site.

ABOUT THE BIRTH CENTER
WHAT TO BRING FOR YOUR HOSPITAL STAY
For yourself, you will need to bring your personal toiletries, robe, slippers, sleepwear if you choose to wear your own, and clothing to go home in. For the baby, you will need to bring clothing and blankets to take the baby home in. A shirt and blankets are provided for the hospital stay only. If you choose, the baby may wear his/her own outfits during the hospital stay. Diapers and wipes are provided.
Have a car seat available to carry the baby out of the hospital at discharge. Know how to make all adjustments on the car seat ahead of time.
VISITING HOUR POLICIES
The father, grandparents, and brothers and sisters of the baby are welcome to visit anytime you desire. Hospital visiting hours for other family and friends are from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. To protect both you and your newborn, ask visitors with flu, colds and other illnesses not to visit you in the hospital. Siblings must be free of illness (no diarrhea, fever, vomiting, coughing, sneezing, signs of upper respiratory infection or exposure to infectious illness) 48 hours prior to visiting. Siblings must not have been exposed to chicken pox within 14 days of visit.
Ask any visitor to wash their hands before touching or holding the baby.
A support person may spend the night if you wish. A daybed/ chair bed is provided by the hospital. Ask your nurse to help you with these accommodations.
Only parents, siblings and grandparents may visit the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. If there are other special people that you wish to see your baby, ask your nurse to make arrangements for a short visit.
LENGTH OF HOSPITALIZATION
How long you stay will be up to you and your doctor and will depend on your rate of recovery from labor and delivery, the condition of your baby, and the success of infant feeding. The usual stay for a vaginal delivery is 24 to 48 hours. The average stay for C-section is three days.
If you are discharged and your baby must remain because of medical problems, try to visit and feed your baby as often as possible.
NEWBORN CHANNEL
The Newborn Channel is available 24 hours a day. Watch over 40 programs that cover critical parenting topics such as: Infant Care, New Mom Care, Breast-feeding, Car Safety, Infant Growth and Development, Immunizations and more. A program guide will be available in your postpartum room.
DISCHARGE CLASS
A discharge instruction class is held every day at 10:00 a.m. in
SPIRITUAL CARE
St. Francis Medical Center is a faith-based hospital. We believe it is important to care for the spirit as well as the body. Chaplains are available to patients and their families for spiritual/emotional support in any situation. A chaplain can be reached through the patient’s nurse or by calling the Spiritual Care Department at (719) 571-1115.
CAMERAS
Still cameras are permitted in the birthing room or operating room. Video cameras are permitted in the birthing room with physician permission. Video cameras are not permitted in the operating room.
DINING
Meals are provided to you through our convenient room service system. This allows you to order your meals when you feel most like eating. Just make your menu selections and phone in your order. Your meals will be delivered at a time that is convenient for you.
Guest trays may be ordered at $5.00 each for breakfast, $7.00 for lunch or dinner. Cash or check only. Guest trays may not be charged to your hospital bill.
Cafeteria hours for Families and Visitors

TELEPHONE USE
Your room has a telephone for your personal use. Local calls can be made by dialing “9” and then the number you are calling. Long distance calls must be billed directly to your home phone or charged to the number called. Dial “0” for long distance. You also may use a calling card or your personal cell phone. Cell phones may not be used in the neonatal intensive care unit.
SMOKING
St. Francis Medical Center is a smoke-free facility in its entirety. Smoking is not permitted anywhere on hospital property.
GIFT SHOPPING
The St. Francis Medical Center Auxiliary offers a wide variety of baby and mom gifts, flowers, personal items, reading material and snacks in the gift shop. The gift shop is located in the main lobby area.

USING CAR SEATS: PROTECTING YOUR CHILD
Birth Through Age 7
Confused about car seats? You are not alone! Used correctly, car seats can protect your child and dramatically reduce a child’s risk of injury or death. Yet, at least four out of five car seats are used incorrectly, reducing their ability to protect children.
Come to this class before purchasing a car seat. Learn how to select and correctly use car seats to protect your child starting from the first trip home from the hospital until your child is big enough to be protected by the seat belts of your car.
Taught by a certified child passenger safety instructor. If you already own a car seat, please read and bring your vehicle owner’s manual and car seat instructions to class. Cost: Free

BABY CARE CLASS
Are you excited and a little nervous about caring for your newborn baby? Babies don’t come with instructions—so join us for a fun and interactive class that will give you a little “hands-on” experience and lots of information. You’ll learn about:
• Physical characteristics of a newborn baby
• Hospital care of your baby including hearing screening and common blood tests
• Circumcision • Newborn jaundice • Immunizations
• Choosing a baby doctor and routine newborn office visits • Baby care skills like bathing, changing diapers, swaddling, cutting fingernails, using a bulb syringe, temperature taking, etc.
• Soothing a crying baby/colic
• How to play with your baby to stimulate intellectual development
• Choosing child care • Keeping baby safe
• Signs your baby is ill and what to do • Adjusting to parenthood

BIRTH CERTIFICATES
Information for your baby’s birth certificate will automatically be filed with the Bureau of Vital Statistics. At your preadmission appointment you will be asked to fill out a “Hospital Worksheet” with legal information for the birth certificate. You can add the baby’s name after delivery. It takes about two weeks to file the birth certificate. Then you may obtain a legal copy by contacting:

SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER INFORMATION
The hospital can request that a Social Security number be issued to your baby IF YOU REQUEST this service on the Birth Certificate worksheet. You should receive your baby’s Social Security card in the mail within eight weeks.
MEDICAL BENEFITS FOR YOUR BABY

PHOTOGRAPHY
A professional photographer will be available to take your baby’s picture while you are in the hospital. If you wish to have pictures taken, the photographer will ask you to sign a consent form. Catalogs with package prices are available. Pictures will be ready for you to take home with you. If you have questions about these pictures, contact the photo company.
ROOMING IN WITH BABY
At St. Francis Medical Center stable babies remain with their parents in the mother’s hospital room. Rooming In gives parents the opportunity to learn and respond to feeding cues and become comfortable with infant care prior to going home. Your nurse will help you with baby care and breast-feeding and answer any questions you have. For safety, never leave your infant unattended in your room.
PROTECT YOUR BABY
Only give your baby to a person who has a picture ID with a pink stripe over the Penrose-St. Francis Health Services name and logo on the bottom of the badge. Don’t be afraid to ask for proper identification if it is not visible.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Centers for Disease Control, the World Health Organization and many others recommend that mothers breast-feed their babies.

PRACTICING LABOR SKILLS
Note: This class is intended to be taken AFTER you have taken a childbirth preparation course (or online course).
Labor is hard work! This class will give you the opportunity to review and practice labor coping skills that can be used to manage your labor more comfortably. A certified childbirth educator will review positioning, relaxation, breathing and distraction techniques. Use of alternative therapies such as massage, aromatherapy and water therapy will also be discussed. You will rotate through “labor stations” to practice skills and have the opportunity to get your questions answered so that you and your partner feel well prepared with a variety of ways to cope with labor.
This class is recommended for expectant parents who: • Want to practice their labor skills used with a previous birth
• Want to practice skills learned in an Online Childbirth Class • Want more practice time after attending a childbirth preparation class

SIBLINGS AT BIRTH
This is a private class for families who want their child(ren) to attend the birth. Class is individualized for your child(ren) ages 4 to 18. Age-appropriate discussion of female anatomy, growth and development of the baby, and labor and delivery is presented using slides and demonstration with dolls. How the child can “help,” and common fears, concerns and questions are addressed. Class is held in a birthing room (if one is available) and taught by a certified childbirth educator/nurse. The child(ren), one or both parents and the child(ren)’s support person should attend the class. The support person for children under 14 should be someone, other than the labor coach, who will be responsible for their care during the labor and birth. Classes are scheduled between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. We are sorry we are unable to provide evening or weekend classes. CLASS REGISTRATION
Online registration is available for most classes. Register for as many classes as you like. Class fees are paid at the time of registration via credit card.
Classes have requirements for minimum and maximum numbers of attendees. (If a class is cancelled or rescheduled, we will notify you and reschedule or refund your money.)

TOURS OF THE BIRTH CENTER
You are invited to tour The Birth Center. You will see a birthing room and a mother-baby room. You will learn about your birth options, hospital procedures and services. Tours are approximately 45 minutes in length. Children under 10 years of age are discouraged from attending. If you plan to attend a Childbirth Preparation Class, you need not sign up for this tour, as a tour is included in that class. A tour is NOT included in your preadmission appointment. Registration

ONLINE CHILDBIRTH CLASS
Can’t come to class? Class can come to you! Our new online childbirth class is the perfect alternative for busy parents needing a flexible class schedule, for moms on bed rest or as a refresher course! While nothing can replace the personal connection of an on-site childbirth class, you’ll learn the same essential information, including what’s happening to your changing body, how you’ll know when you are really in labor, helpful comfort techniques, advice for partners, an overview of medical procedures, and much more. Besides self-paced reading, this class utilizes video clips, animations, interactive games and printable PDFs.
You may preview the class by going to penrosestfrancis.org, then choose “Birth Center” from the specialties list, then choose “classes.” You will see a tab labeled “Online Childbirth Class Preview Demo.” Review the demo; if you like the class, register online.
Here is how the Online Childbirth Class works:
1. Register and pay for your class online. We also suggest you register for a hospital tour at this time.
2. Within 24 - 48 hours you will receive a welcome email and instructions to log in to the program. You will have access for the next six weeks.
3. Review the class at your own pace.
4. After completing your class, you may want to consider attending the Practicing Labor Skills class.

This option is convenient for those who desire one-on-one class time with a childbirth educator. Classes are held at St. Francis Medical Center at a date and time that is agreed upon by parents and instructor. MOMS IN MOTION – WATER EXERCISE
Moms in Motion is a water exercise class for pregnant women. Must have prescription from OB to participate.

PRENATAL YOGA
Prenatal yoga is designed to accommodate mothers in all stages of pregnancy. This class will safely use yoga poses to strengthen the legs and pelvic area while also incorporating stretches to ease the tensions and pains of pregnancy. Students will develop stress-relieving breathing techniques and restorative yoga poses to calm the anxiety that can occur during pregnancy. Call (719) 776-5776 to register for this class.

INFANT/CHILD CPR
If your baby or child quit breathing or choked would you know what to do? This two-hour course is designed to teach parents, grandparents or babysitters how to administer CPR to babies or children, and how to relieve an obstructed airway. The class requires active participation, practice and testing on manikins. Anyone with a cold, cold sore or flu symptoms may not participate.
This is the American Heart Association class “CPR for Family and Friends.” A CPR certification is NOT awarded for attending this class.
