Read this Fact Guide and write a paragraph to attract tourists to Patagonia in English.

Patagonia

! It is a massive chunk of land on bottom of the American continent, split between Chile and

Argentina.

This is the place for adventure travellers, home to some of the most incredible landscapes we've seen,

exciting treks as well as a wide variety of wildlife.

After a month travelling across this vast region of South America, we've put together our interesting facts

about Patagonia.

Patagonia means ‘Land of the Big Feet'

The story goes that when fabulous Portuguese explorer,

Ferdinand Magellan, first set foot here in 1520, he found large

footprints of the natives. Later when he met them, he alleged

they were almost twice the size of normal human size, measuring

around 4 metres (13ft)! Future explorers also wrote about

meeting Patagonian giants but were later criticised for

exaggerating.

It has the second-longest living species on Earth

The Alerces Tree is 2,600 years old. an It is the second-longest living species on our planet. Can you believe

this tree is older than Jesus Christ?

Welsh people live here!

Patagonia is home to one of the largest Welsh communities outside of Wales, especially in

the Chubut region of Argentina. Settlers first arrived in 1865 in Puerto Madryn and over the

years spread inland, creating settlements like Gaiman, Trelew, Trevelin and Dolavon.

Mummy whales come here to give birth

It is a popular breeding ground for whales. They reproduce every 2-3 years,

opting for the safe and quiet waters around Peninsula Valdés in Chubut.

The biggest dinosaur ever is from Patagonia

The fossils for the largest ever dinosaur that walked our planet was found

smack bang in the middle of Patagonia on the Argentinian side.

This dinosaur is still unnamed but is known to have been a herbivore,

measuring 42m in length and weighing 76 tons.

Patagonia is a desert!

That's right. The 8th largest in the world in fact. The Patagonian desert is a

cold winter desert, with average temperatures of only 3 degrees.

Largest colony of Magellanic Penguins in the world

Argentina has a large colony of penguins. The Magellanic penguins grow to

around 61-76 cm (24-30 inches) and are extremely cute to watch, especially

when they're clumsily waddling around on land.

Wider Reading 2

Today I get up without thinking

I'm going to leave everything and then I

I put my hand in the air, I fly

Without complicating my life to enjoy and

I

I want more, I want more

It's how I want to be

Nothing more, nothing more

Not a minute to lose

Fly with the wind

And feel that time stops

Paint the moment

And the clouds go chasing

Knowing how to sing a good time

Go through the streets and want

Fly with the wind

And feel that time stops

And feel that time stops

Leave the bad, stop thinking

In what could have been

And start to see that the

Future is knocking on your door

Ace? that takes advantage of do as I do

and say

I want more, I want more

It's how I want to be

Nothing more, nothing more

Not a minute to lose

Hoy me levanto sin pensar

Voy a dejarlo todo y luego yo

Pongo la mano en el aire, echo a

vo-lar

Sin complicarme la vida a disfrutar y

yo

Yo quiero más, quiero más

Es como quiero ser

Nada más, nada más

Ni un minuto que perder

Volar con el viento

Y sentir que se para el tiempo

Pintar el momento

Y las nubes ir persiguiendo

Saber cantar pasarlo bien

2020 Chile protests: 'We are subjugated by the rich. It's time for

that to end'

The people are tired of being treated like slaves

or criminals. If you don’t have an important

last name or don’t have money you are

nothing.

“The first demand is to change the

constitution: we are the only country in Latin

America that has the same constitution it had

under a dictatorship. We have the same laws

and the same economic model brought in by

the dictatorship. And we are seeing that

they

still violate human rights

like they did under

the dictatorship.

“It is incredible how they think we are stupid.

But people woke up and are showing the

government that we are not stupid: they won’t

be sticking their finger down our throats ever

again.”

“As a student it’s very expensive to live here in Santiago. My parents and I are from northern Chile, so I live here alone. “I am fighting for a better education that costs less, a subway fare that is fair, and a life with more dignity. Because what we earn now is not enough to survive on. I want to become [economically]

independent but I can’t – life it is just too expensive. I want to be a student, to live in peace – these are little things.

“I am not afraid of the police– even though many people have been wounded, and others have been killed. I just don’t understand why they attack us with so much force.”
