LAVAL NANTES RENNES ANGERS QUIMPER SAINT LÔ SAINT MALO Location of some of Living Language hosting schools

C

onducted in regular French private Secondary schools, this course is designed to complement the Leaving Cert syllabus in the context of a real French immersion and guaran-tees progress in both oral and written French. An exam held in May in Dublin matches the Irish student to his/her corre-sponding French school.

I

ts principal aim is to give each student a strong foundation in both grammar and communication skills (oral and aural). High motivation is a pre-requisite as French is the vehicular language. Total participation in classes is expected. A final individual progress report is provided.

E

ach of our Centres welcomes 10 to 15 students of similar levels taught by 2 teachers in smaller sub-groups of 5 to 8 students for most classes. These very small classes maximise personal attention and allow our experienced native teachers to attend to the particular prob-lems and needs of each individual student.

T

imetable is adapted to the French school schedule. Homework includes extra-curricular tasks such as reading, surveying, reporting from French TV news, watch-ing videos, researchwatch-ing on internet, writing short stories etc. Students may occasionally be requested to attend one regular class at the French school.

o

ur main

w o r k i n g documents in-clude our own special Manual (la Boîte à Outils) as well as Mosaïqueand La Grammaire Pro-g r e s s i v e d u

Français. Drill exercises adapted to the student’s level consolidate progress.

A

ccommodation in a F r e n c h f a m i l y

(parents of one student of the French school) gives the unique opportunity to meet French students in their own environment and to share sporting and cul-tural activities with them.

F

rench schools are mixed, with conserva-tive dress code. Our teach-ers work in a relaxed at-mosphere, with a few rules.

FEW COMPARISONS BETWEEN

...

French Exchanges

Discovering the French way of life for a couple of weeks is certainly enriching. However, exchanges do not guarantee durable progress in French - not to mention the risk of having to accommodate different temperaments and dispositions.

Intensive 5th year French summer courses, run in Ireland

Provided the Irish students’ levels are effectively streamlined, real individual progress is only attainable in

very small classes. Besides, working on French grammar and written French may not suffice: a solid

command of oral and aural French is now a sizeable part of the LC exam.

Residential French courses, run in Ireland

Perceived as a sort of a local French Gaeltacht, imposing the use of the French language in a sea of

English speakers remains artificial. From experience, rather than being enforced, the use of the language

will gain instead, whenencouraged in a natural French environment.

Homestays / Sporting courses run in France

Homestays in France –offering sand, sun and even rugby training– do incorporate French classes. However, these are usually limited to mornings, with English still lingering as the casual language for groups of numerous Irish friends. Irish parents may also worry about vacuum of supervision... especially when accommodation is arranged in apartments, or in families largely recruited only on financial benefits.
