Acne is a disorder of the sebaceous glands (glands that secrete oil) which become plugged due to oil and dead skin cells. This will further lead to blackheads, whiteheads, or pimples. This problem affects people of all ages and was most common in teenagers but now has shown an increase n the older age groups and is known as adult onset acne.

SOME OF THE ORAL MEDICATIONS ARE AS FOLLOWS

• An bio cs: If a person has moderate to severe acne, then you can use oral an bio cs for reducing the bacteria growth and inflamma on. Oral an bio cs are only used for a short me to prevent an bio c resistance.

• Isotre noin: It is a powerful drug for those who are suffering from severe acne that can't be treated with other products. It is important to note that oral isotre noin is an effec ve agent but there are significant side effects. These include depression, suicide, ulcera ve coli s, and erec le dysfunc on to name a few. Due to these poten al side effects, the doctor has to closely monitor the pa ent before doing the treatment with the product.

• An -Androgen Agents: The drug spironolactone might be considered for women and adolescent girls if oral an bio cs will not work. It will work by blocking the effect of androgen hormones on the sebaceous glands. Some of the possible effects will include painful periods and breast tenderness.

SOME OF THE COMMON TOPICAL MEDICATIONS ARE LISTED BELOW

Re noids: These are available in the form of cream, gel, and lo ons. This derived from vitamin A and also include tre noin, tazarotene, and adapalene. This medica on is applied in the evening. At the start, you have to apply it three mes a week. Once your skin becomes used to it, then it will prevent the plugging of the hair follicles.

An bio cs: These will work by killing the excessive skin bacteria and will reduce the redness on the skin. In the star ng months of treatment, you will use re noid and an bio c. An bio cs will be used in the morning and the re noid will be used in the evening. Note that an bio cs are used with benzoyl peroxide for reducing the likelihood of developing an bio c resistance. For instance, clindamycin combines with benzoyl peroxide (Benzaclin, Duac, Acanya) and erythromycin combines with benzoyl peroxide (Benzamycin)

Laser Therapy: This involves the use of very specific lasers and laser wavelengths which are aimed at regula ng the enlarged hyperac ve sebaceous glands. These are not the lasers used for acne scar resurfacing and are used for different purposes. The evidence from recent studies over a 5 year period show results that last up to 5 years in controlling ac ve acne.

Light Therapy: Light at specific wavelengths is also being used to treat acne. There is no down me when going for light therapy and is an instant treatment for acne and skin rejuvena on. It can be combined with other therapies to get the be er results.
