OF
THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN
Organizational Structure
The Detroit Area Study (DAS)
is a continuing facility
for graduate training and faculty research, which was es-
tablished in 1951 at The University of Michigan.
The
initial support for the Study came from behavioral re-
search funds given to The University of Michigan by the
Ford Foundation.
Since 1958 The University
h a s assumed
complete financial responsibility for the DAS.
The Detroit Area Study
is a basic unit in the graduate
training program of The University of Michigan's Depart-
ment of Sociology.
In
addition, an administrative rela-
tionship with the Survey Research Center of the Institute
for Social Research provides the DAS with professional
aid in all phases of survey research.
The Objectives of the Detroit Area Study
The three main objectives of the Detroit Area Study
are:
(1) to train students in the methods of field re-
search in the social sciences,
(2)
to serve a s a major
resource for basic research in the social sciences at The
University of Michigan, and
(3)
to make social science
data available to greater ~ e t r o i t '
and to other communi-
ties with similar interests and problems.
Student Training
Student participation in the Detroit Area Study re-
quires enrollment for two semesters in a field meth-
ods course of all first-year graduates in sociology at
The University of Michigan.
The enrollment of inter-
economics, and other related disciplines is encouraged
and adds greatly to the interdisciplinary approach which
DAS training tries to promote.
A listing of students who
have participated in the Detroit Area Study through
1959-
60
may be found on pages
22-24
of this pamphlet.
The basic training philosophy of the Detroit Area Study
i s that students
will learn best
if
their experience goes
beyond classroom discussion to meet the rigorous condi-
tions involved in completing a major field study while
observing high standards of professional competence. The
value of this po$ition seems to have been demonstrated
by nine years of experience with the DAS:
No textbook,
however excellent, can convey the frustrations and the
successes of social research a s well a s actual participa-
tion in a major research undertaking.
Faculty Research
In addition to the training function, the Detroit Area
Study affords an important resource for basic social
science research.
To a large extent, the training and
research objectives of the Detroit Area Study a r e com-
plementary.
The value of the training to the student i s
considerably increased by the knowledge that his efforts
a r e instrumental in the production of a major piece of
research.
On
the other hand, the worth of the final re-
search product
is highly dependent on the quality of the
training.
The sample design employed by the Detroit Area Study
has always followed a probability model and has usually
required the collection of about 750 interviews. The sam-
ple universe for most studies
has consisted of all adults
in the metropolitan Detroit commudty, but occasionally a
particular problem
has called for a different type of sam-
ple.
For example, recently the DAS interviewed precinct
workers of both major political parties in a s e r i e s of
Wayne County (Detroit) precincts selected on a probability
basis.
Community Services
The third major objective of the Detroit Akea. Study
is to supply social science data of value to ' g r e a t e r De-
troit and other communities. To this end, almost all DAS
reprints and special reports a r e available without charge.
6 - :
Certain demographic and socioeconomic data a r e col-
lected each year by the Detroit Area Study.
These ma-
terials serve a s the basis for a continuing s e r i e s of
reports and articles written by DAS staff members. The
publications have a comparatively wide circulation among
,
..
L,agencies in Detroit and throughout the country.
s.
. .
Special tabulations of DAS data have been prepared at
"
the request of such agencies a s the Michigan Fair Em-
ployment Practices Commission, the three major Detroit
newspapers, the Detroit Council of Churches, The Ameri-
can Jewish committee, the Catholic Archdiocese of De-
troit, the Citizens Research Council of Michigan, the
Detroit Public Library, and the City of Detroit's Com-
mission on Community Relations.
The remainder of this pamphlet contains a bibliography
of publications based on data collected by the Detroit Area
Study.
These titles were issued between September
