onsolidated 2012 results for the companies under the Grimaldi Group umbrella make

en-couraging reading. Last year saw record turnover of just over Euro 2.7 billion, a Euro 200

million improvement on 2011. Net profit was also up from around Euro 100 million in 2011

to Euro 164 million.

The Group’s Italian companies put in a particularly impressive performance; they were already

do-ing well before we entered this era of seemdo-ingly endless crisis, and they’re still dodo-ing well today.

Companies outside our home market, such Atlantic Container Line and Malta Motorways of the Sea,

also performed satisfactorily. Management teams at Finnlines and Minoan Lines, meanwhile, have

put in a good deal of hard work, though more remains to be done.

Many Italians believe one’s virtues should be on public display, while one’s sins should remain

private. But within our Group we seem to have inadvertently adopted the opposite policy. Grimaldi’s

privately owned companies have become paragons of virtue, whereas the Group’s publicly listed

companies were probably leveraged a little too highly when the crisis struck. There was not enough

focus on profit, and this soon became apparent when market conditions softened.

Balance sheet strengthening is now underway at Minoan and Finnlines via capital increases –

around Euro 50 million and Euro 28 million respectively. Other measures have also been taken to

remove costs. At Minoan, some vessels have been chartered out while at Finnlines, staffing levels

in the company’s port business are being reduced by about 100. At both companies we have

tak-en steps to lower fuel costs by investing in efficitak-ent design - changing propellers on certain Minoan

vessels being just one example. The Finnlines headquarters have moved to a new portside location,

enabling the old, more costly building to be handed back to its landlord.

Finnlines has signed two sizeable contracts this year; one with a large forest products shipper, and

another with a high-end car manufacturer. This summer, Finnlines vessels will be both transporting

parts to the production line in Finland and bringing finished cars back out to the market place.

Despite the extremely challenging conditions the Group continues to see adequate cash flow,

which has paved the way for further investment. We are looking forward to the entry into service of

some of the most impressive vessels ever to join the fleet – there are 16 in all under the current

investment programme. The deepsea vessels destined for ACL services are twice as efficient in

terms of fuel consumption as the ships they will replace, a fact that is sure to trigger better

finan-cial results. Where we could move 40 TEU with one tonne of fuel, we will soon be moving 80 TEU.

The state-of-the-art vessels built at the Hyundai Mipo Shipyard in South Korea and the on

roll-off ships we purchased from Hong Kong-based Pacific Basin all bring welcome extra capacity to

our worldwide network spanning North America, South America and West Africa. Recent purchases

have all been made on very favourable terms – this is perhaps one of the few upsides to the

se-vere recession with which many of our competitors continue to struggle.

When you factor in upgrades to the Antwerp hub in Belgium for the ACL vessels and investment

at the Grimaldi new terminal in Barcelona, Spain, you will surely agree that there are plenty of

reasons for our customers, partners, staff and financial backers to trust in the future solidity of our

Group.

And to cap off this good news story we are proud to report that 2013 is also off to an impressive

start. The Group as a whole is performing better than is was at this point last year. We plan to

con-tinue to defy the crisis.

he Group’s programme of

devel-oping its Mediterranean short sea

services is once again illustrated by

the deployment, last March, of three new

modern ro/ro vessels

Eurocargo Palermo,

Eurocargo Roma

and

Eurocargo Sicilia

.

The

Eurocargo Palermo

, built at the

Hyun-dai Mipo shipyards, has been deployed

at the beginning of March in the short

sea line linking Livorno to Savona,

Bar-celona and Valencia, together with the

vessel

Eurocargo Ravenna

. The modern

unit, with a length of 200 metres and a

gross tonnage of 32,645 metres, is able

to transport 3,847 linear metres of rolling

cargo, at a service speed of 22 knots. The

service, which has a three-times-a-week

frequency, offers very convenient

tran-sit times for the traffic from the industrial

basins of Milan, Turin and the north of

Italy with Barcelona, the Catalunya

re-gion and the north of Spain.

Meanwhile, the

Eurocargo Roma

and

Eurocargo Sicilia

entered respectively

into the Genoa-Livorno-Palermo and

the Ravenna-Brindisi-Catania short sea

routes. These two services offer

custom-ers of Northern Italy’s industrial triangle

an easy access to Sicily, as well as a fast

connection between the Upper and the

Southern Adriatic coast of Italy.

Further-more, cargo from Switzerland, Germany,

Austria and Eastern Europe can enjoy the

advantages of these new lines.

With the same features as her sistership

Eurocargo Palermo

, the

Eurocargo Roma

joined the

Eurocargo Brindisi

to provide

four times a week the

Genova-Livorno-Palermo MoS dedicated to the transport

of rolling freight.

The

Eurocargo Sicilia

, built by the

Odense shipyard, joined her sistership

Eurocargo Catania

on the

three-times-a-week Ravenna-Brindisi-Catania service.

Both have a cargo capacity of 250

com-mercial units, such as trucks, trailers,

overgauge vehicles and other types of

rolling cargo.

The deployment of these new

Eurocar-go-class vessels is aimed at

strengthen-ing and developstrengthen-ing an efficient network

of connections on the short sea routes, by

providing the best service options to the

Group’s customers.

n the 14

th

of January, the ceremony for the

lay-ing of the foundation stone of the new Grimaldi

Group terminal was held at the Muelle Costa

in the port of Barcelona. Thanks to this investment, the

Group consolidates its strong commitment in making

Barcelona the epicentre of its short sea services in the

Western Mediterranean.

The ceremony was attended by various authorities

in-cluding Santi Vila, Director for Territory and

Sustain-ability of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Guido Grimaldi,

Director of the Grimaldi Group, as well

as Mario Massarotti, Managing Director

of Grimaldi Logistica España.

The Grimaldi Group has been awarded

a concession of 15 years renewable for

another seven by the Barcelona Port

Au-thority for the management of the new

Terminal at Muelle Costa.

Guido Grimaldi said that this investment

demonstrates the aim of the Group to

of-fer high quality services according to the

needs of our customers. Our goal is to

further enhance our wide network of

mo-torways of the sea, strengthening the role

of Barcelona as a strategic port for freight

and passenger services offered by the

Gri-maldi Group.

The new terminal, called Grimaldi

Ter-minal Barcelona, will have a total area of

63,000 square metres and will be fully

equipped for the handling of freight and

passengers. Storage facilities will be

foreseen for freight, particularly for cars,

vans, trucks and other rolling equipment.

A three-level building with a total surface

of 3,750 square metres will be dedicated

to offices, a shopping area, a restaurant

and a conference room. The passenger

terminal will be able to handle 1,800

pas-sengers boarding and 1,800

disembark-ing at the same time, also thanks to a

foot-bridge with three fingers for the access

of passengers from the terminal directly

into the ships.

The new terminal will accommodate the

passenger and freight transport services

offered by the Group as well as those

of-fered by others maritime operators. The

Grimaldi Group currently connects daily

Barcelona with Civitavecchia (Rome)

with the deployment of the two cruise

ferries

Cruise Roma

and

Cruise

Barce-lona

(an extra daily call at Porto Torres,

Sardinia, is offered during the summer

period).

The Group also offers a weekly service

for passengers and freight to the ports of

Livorno and Tangier and a

three-times-a-week service to Livorno and Savona for

freight only.

W

allhamn AB, the Swedish private port wholly-owned by the

Grimaldi Group, achieved excellent results in 2012: it was

registered as the 11th largest port company in sales out of 53 and,

furthermore, by processing about 160,800 vehicles, the port goes

from being the third largest to be the second largest car port out of

five in Sweden.

The port of Wallhamn is strategically located as it serves both for

imports and exports trades the Western part of Sweden as well as the

South Eastern part of Norway. It operates terminal and stevedoring

activities focused on the handling of rolling units, containers and

uni-tized general cargo. With a storage area of 500,000 square metres, it

also counts on a PDI workshop and up fitting of commercial vehicles.

The port is called by weekly Grimaldi Lines Euromed Service,

link-ing Northern Europe to the Mediterranean, and it is connected also

by other operators to the Far East with weekly departures.

S

ince March 2013, the Finnish

company Finnlines launched a

new direct service linking

Hel-sinki (Finland) to Rostock (Germany).

The direct line offers three sailings a

week from Rostock and three from

Hel-sinki, with a schedule integrated into the

European railway network in

combina-tion with the passenger segment for the

Rostock and Berlin hinterland.

Dedicated to the transport of freight

and passengers, the new service is

per-formed by the Hansa-class

Transeuropa

,

which has a gross tonnage of 32,534

tonnes, a length of 180 metres, and

ac-comodates about 3,200 linear metres of

rolling cargo and about 114 passengers.

Equipped with large 20-m

2

cabins, the

vessel also offers comfortable facilities

to passengers, such as a restaurant, bar,

sauna and pool for a pleasant travel

ex-perience.

The Grimaldi-controlled Finnlines

en-hanced its network by launching a new

ro/ro weekly service linking Rostock

(Germany) to Zeebrugge (Belgium) and

Bilbao (Spain). This new service aims to

offer a safer, economical and more

en-vironmentally friendly alternative to the

land route connection from Rostock to

Benelux and Northern Spain. Together

with Finnlines’ quality and customer

care this service will have an

economi-cal and ecologieconomi-cal impact by providing a

new alternative to logistics and industrial

operators.

A

s from the 1

st

of February

Gri-maldi Benin, acting as

exclu-sive shipping agent for the Grimaldi

Group’s services calling at the port

of Cotonou, inaugurated its new

of-fices in the Beninese economical

capital.

The Benin Grimaldi new building

is located in a strategic position in

front of the main entrance of the

port. The property is of over 1,800

square metres while the office is a

two-floor building with a total

sur-face of 1,500 square metres.

The building hosts the Grimaldi

Benin staff of 37 employees plus

additional 25 desks for the

manage-ment, administration and financial

departments of Roro Terminal

Be-nin stevedoring company,  whose

the majority shareholder has been

Grimaldi Benin since the starting

activities in October 2010.

The new office with the same

con-cept and style as other

Grimaldi-owned buildings in West Africa,

provides the latest camera security

system coupled with a modern

or-ganisation, to provide the most

ef-ficient customer support.

Grimaldi Benin has handled over

500,000 vehicles over the last five

years and serves a Grimaldi

ves-sel every 2.5 days. Cotonou is

cur-rently called by the Grimaldi Lines

regular MEX service, linking the

Mediterranean with West Africa,

the North Europe-West Africa and

the North America-West Africa

ser-vices.

s

ErvicE

A

s from the 17

th

of May, the

Medi-terranean Express service (MEX)

linking the Mediterranean with

West Africa has been enhanced through

the deployment of additional tonnage.

The con/ro-multipurpose vessel

Repub-blica di Roma

joined the two other vessels

of the same capacity already deployed

on this service, the

Repubblica di

Argen-tina

and the

Repubblica del Brasile

. With

a gross tonnage of about 52,000 tonnes

and a length of 210 metres, each of these

vessels can ideally load 2,400 linear

me-tres of rolling freight, 700 cars/vans and

600 TEUs.

The MEX service, dedicated to the

trans-port of rolling freight, containers and

project cargo, currently links the ports of

Valencia, Marseille, Genoa and Salerno to

Casablanca (Morocco), Dakar (Senegal),

Conakry (Guinea), Lome (Togo), Lagos

(Nigeria), Cotonou (Benin) and Abidjan

(Ivory Coast).

With the deployment of these three

ves-sels the service increased by over 30%

in its loading capacity for both

contain-ers and rolling cargo. The frequency

improved from 18 to 14 days, with

depar-tures from the ports of Valencia, Marseille,

Genoa and Salerno, on fixed days in

alter-nate weeks.

Furthermore, the Group regularly links

Northern Europe with West Africa with

three services employing more than 20

con/ro-multipurpose vessels

transport-ing rolltransport-ing cargo, containers and project

cargo. With these services, freight from

the Mediterranean transported via the

MEX service, can achieve extremely

competitive delivery times and freight

rates. Various other ports of Africa

indi-rectly served by transhipment to the port

of Dakar are: Banjul (Gambia), Freetown

(Sierra Leone), Monrovia (Liberia), Tema

(Ghana), Douala (Cameroon), Libreville

and Port Gentil (Gabon), Boma (Dem. Rep.

of Congo), Pointe Noire

(Congo-Brazza-ville) and Luanda (Angola).

space dedicated to exhibitors in the

Interna-tional Village, set up along the seaside of

Na-ples. On this occasion the Group presented the

wide offer of passenger maritime services in the

Mediterranean, together with special

money-saving deals aimed at different target markets.

By being present at the Neapolitan stage of

the America’s Cup allowed Grimaldi Lines to

further consolidate the strong relationship not

only with the sea and sailing, but also with the

city of Naples, where the company was set up

and is based. According to the organisers of

the America’s Cup, during the whole week of

the sailing races, more than one million people

attended the spaces set up to host the event.
