With its 129-year

been preparing

its students to the future

than 200 professional and prominent faculty members. Istanbul Commerce

University, one of

foundation universities

of Turkey, has taken its

privilege from its

training programs,

professional and

prominent faculty members,

technical facilities

and its

future vision aiming

to serve to its students. Our

university started

functioning in 2001-2002

year with 73 students,

celebrating its 11th

anniversary

as of today, has been

B.ACADEMIC INFORMATION

Courses offered in English

Teaching at Istanbul Commerce University is mainly conducted in Turkish, however all faculties offer variety of courses with instruction in English for its students and all exchange students.

Erasmus students can participate in Turkish courses for beginners Turkish Language-1 and Turkish Language-2 for the whole academic year rated with 6 ECTS.

Grading

Istanbul Commerce University use the typical American A-F scale where GPA is calculated on a scale of 4.00. The letter grades, coefficients and percentage equivalents are given below.

Academic Calendar

The academic year consist of two semesters. The autumn semester typically runs from the beginning of October to the beginning of February and the spring semester from mid-February to the mid-June. Each semester ends with an exam session. There is usually a teaching break of two weeks in February.

II. PRE-DEPARTURE INFORMATION

A.STUDENT VISA

Foreign students should secure a Student Visa prior to their trip to Turkey from the nearest Turkish Embassy or Consulate in their country.

For education visas, students are required to submit documents such as: • A letter of acceptance given by the university in Turkey,

• Original passport valid for at least one year, • A completed visa application form,

• Recent passport size pictures

• A non-refundable processing fee for the Turkish Consulate.

Incoming students are advised to apply for the visa at least two months prior to the date of departure.

B.RESIDENCE PERMIT

Once students arrived into Turkey, a residence permit should be obtained by an application through the local authorities within one month of the student’s arrival. The application is made to the Foreigners Department of the Istanbul Provincial Security Directorate. Students must register for an online appointment to receive an application form from the link below.

Appointment must be taken only from “İL EMNİYET MÜDÜRLÜĞÜ- YABANCILAR ŞUBE MÜDÜRLÜĞÜ”

You MUST take an appointment within 30 days of your arrival in Turkey. Otherwise, the student visa of the applicant will be invalidated.

C.ACCOMMODATION

To find housing in different country must be difficult while you are in your home country. Nevertheless we recommend you to start searching for a place to stay as soon as possible. Students can stay in dormitories or rent a room or flat in Istanbul. Erasmus office will be happy to help you while you search an accommodation. We will supply you with information on how to find accommodation in Istanbul. Furthermore, you should follow announcement on Erasmus office Facebook page, message boards on campus that there will be flat or flat share options from our current students or house owners.

D.HEALTH INSURANCE

All Exchange students are strongly recommended to have an internationally valid health insurance which must cover their study period in Turkey. Please be aware that in which hospitals your health insurance will be valid in Istanbul.

Health Services at University

Istanbul Commerce University has free medical service for students and faculty members on all campuses. In all four health centers situated on our Sütlüce, Üsküdar, Küçükyalı and Eminönü campuses. A full-time doctor, five nurses, two biochemical engineers, one laboratory technician and two specialist psychologists are employed at our health centers

E.FINANCES

Cost of Living in Istanbul

The cost of living in Istanbul is lower than many other European cities. Experiences also show that students in Istanbul spend approximately 500-900 € per month including room, food and transportation. However, the amount of money you will need depends on your life style. For example, if you plan to travel different parts of Turkey, you will definitely need more money.

Arriving Istanbul by plane

There are two international airports;

Istanbul Ataturk Airport is located on the European side of Istanbul. All major international flights are landed there. The travelling time to the city center is 50-60 minutes from there. Phone: (0212) 465 30 00 www.ataturkairport.com

Upon Arrival

Our Erasmus Office will be happy to arrange a student to pick you up from airport and accompany you to find your way to the Erasmus office. So, we strongly suggest you to arrive in Istanbul during day time or early in the evening.

III.STUDENT LIFE AT ISTANBUL

COMMERCE UNIVERSITY

The Library and Electronic Resources

Our three libraries situated on Üsküdar, Sütlüce and Küçükyalı campuses are information centers open for students, instructors and graduate students of other educational institutions and academics use by Istanbul Commerce University. Our libraries comprise in excess of 48,000 books and 87,000 additional e-books, an extensive collection of non-book materials including CD-ROMs, video and audio cassettes, and access to more than 20 different databases.

Data Processing Services

Istanbul Commerce University never hesitates to invest in developing and improving its data processing infrastructure. Data processing services offered to our students, not limited to those included in the list, include the following: Internet, Mail and Web domain, Wireless Internet, Student Automation, Network, Computer Labs.

09 Social Life

Besides academic and scientific research, cultural and social activities are of great importance at our university. In this context, seminars, panels, conferences and symposiums, scientific discussions and various exhibitions and concerts, theater performances and dance activities are organized at our university. In the area of our university’s social life, there are tennis courts, basketball fields and swimming pools to color our students’ daily lives at Kandilli Cemile Sultan Social Facility of our founder’s foundation.

Student Clubs

At Istanbul Commerce University, various social, cultural, artistic and intellectual activities and events are organized through student clubs. We have 55 student clubs in total, including for theater, classical Islamic arts, music and dance, Young Volunteers Social Solidarity for social volunteers, civilization and opinion clubs, culture and literature, idea and art for culture, sailing clubs, American football, climbing and natural sports for sporting activities.

Sports

Istanbul Commerce University offers the current sports facilities to enable students and the personnel to perform activities to improve their physical and mental development for a healthy life. Besides this, Istanbul Commerce University supports its sports teams by employing professional coaches and trainers in order to produce outstanding performance in trainings and contests.
