From the School Nurse: Please be aware when sending in treats to share with your child’s classmates to avoid anything containing NUTS (peanuts or treenuts). We have over 20 students with life threatening nut allergies and have recently had a several incidents of allergic reactions.

Traffic Safety: Please note that all curb areas painted yellow are designated NO PARKING zones. The north side of Hastings Lane is bus drop off only—drivers are prohibited from dropping students off in this area. In addition, we ask that you are mindful not to block the driveways of our neighbors so that they have access to the street. Finally, continue to monitor your speed in the 20 MPH school zones surrounding our campus. Nothing is more important than the safety of our students/your children. To that end, we have asked the Upper Arlington Police to increase their presence in the area during drop off and pick up times. Thank you for your assistance!

Dear Hastings Families,

Hastings Middle School is committed to providing our students with career

exploration opportunities. We will continue this commitment with our 8th grade students being able to

job shadow on Thursday April 23, 2015. Job Shadowing is an excellent opportunity for our students

to spend a day observing and interviewing an employee at a job in a particular area that is of special

interest to that student. Many students today are often unaware of the numerous career options

available to them and shadowing gives students the opportunity to explore a job in depth to gain

valuable information about the world of work.

Most of our students will be able find their own shadowing placements, but some will be in need of a

host. If you are willing to host a Hasting 8th grader please click the link

(

) to provide details about your job. Your willingness to help educate

our students is much appreciated.

Please consider a $30 or more donation for the programs, scholarships, and teacher support that PTO provides. We have had 113 families participate and

Hastings Middle School

Adopt-A-Chair Campaign

2014/2015

To date we have repaired, painted and upholstered 362 out of 740 auditorium seats with the help of HMS families, HMS PTO and the Upper Arlington Education Foundation. The total cost of chair refurbishment is just over $111,000.00. Future needs include upgrades to the sound system, lighting, floors and curtains. For now, our activity is focused on the original plywood seats which are in dire need of repair. With that said, we have 378 chairs left to repair and are in need of $56,700.00 to finish. Last year families donated seventy seats by donating over $8,000.00 at school events!

Each refurbished chair costs $150 and includes a 2 X 3 plaque with a donors name/business and date permanently attached to the front of each seat back and all repairs are done over the summer months. We would like to thank the following families who adopted chairs last Fall:

David & Jayna D’Herete Sourav Guha

Hastings Football 2014 Matthew & Jennifer Kennedy Austin & Amy Nida

The Wood Family

The $1 Door Campaign will continue for all Spring events. This effort contributes to a significant number of chair upgrades. $1, $5, $10 or $20 dropped in an envelope at the auditorium doors makes a HUGE difference!

Remember that you can donate with multiple families and that we want to solicit business donors but we need volunteers. Please consider how you or your business can support this ongoing effort and help finish this project. You can see by the numbers how business donations could significantly impact our projects progress. Please visit www.hastingspto.org for downloadable order forms, electronic payment options and Adopt-A-Chair contact information. Questions? email [email protected]

Spring Volunteering

We invite you to spend an enjoyable evening volunteering with us at the Shrek Jr. performances by helping hand out $1 Door Campaign donation envelopes on March 7,8,14 & 15. If your child is in the play we’ll save you an upholstered seat up front while you’re at the door volunteering! We anticipate large community crowds for these events so please consider helping by going to the following address to sign up:

Available to help with business donations…email [email protected] The Transformation

These are examples of current auditorium chairs. The most heavily damaged have already been rotated out over the last three summers. Our fifty three year old plywood chairs have been well loved. Therefore they continue to peel off in layers as the plywood has dried, chipped or split. All splintered seats have been removed. So, as you can see there is significant need for expediency in our campaign drive.

During refurbishing the existing back is sanded, varnished and upholstered. The seat is replaced with a new steel upholstered seat which is much needed upgrade and is much stronger than the original. The arm supports are new as well. The iron bases for an entire row (which is one piece) are removed, stripped, powder coated and reinstalled.
