Last night at Metro Bank Park the Harrisburg Senators overcame deficits of two and three runs, then opened up a three run lead of their own before ultimately falling to the Reading Phillies 11-9. Harrisburg continued it’s hot hitting by pounding out 11 hits with six of them going for extra bases. However, Reading had 14 hits and had five of them being for extra bases with three leaving the ballpark for home runs. Reading led 3-0 early against Chien-Ming Wang before Harrisburg started its first comeback effort. In the fourth inning Justin Bloxom led off with a homer for his 7th of the season. Then later in the inning with two runners on base, James Skelton doubled down the right field line to plate two and even the score. In the fifth Reading took back the lead on RBI doubles from Cody Asche and Leandro Castro. In the sixth the Senators had their first five runners reach base as they chased Reading’s Brody Colvin from the game. The Senators ultimately plated five runs in the frame with the big hits coming from Tim Pahuta (pinch-hit two-run double) and Sean Nicol (two-run triple). The Sens at that stage were ahead 8-5. But as was the story of the night Reading answered. In the seventh Rafael Martin yielded a leadoff walk to Tyson Gillies. Cody Asche then stepped up and made Harrisburg pay by clobbering his second homer on the night, pulling the R-Phils within one. Harrisburg’s Zech Zinicola worked out of the inning and in the bottom half Destin Hood laced a triple to the fence in left-center. Hood later scored on a sacrifice fly by Skelton. Reading sliced the two run deficit in half in the eighth inning by plating a run on a pinch-hit single by Jiwan James. Darin Ruf hit his 32nd homer on the season when he led off the ninth inning to tie the game. Reading then used a walk, single, and a sacrifice bunt to place two runners in scoring position with just one out. Miguel Abreu followed by lining a hit into center to score both runs and put Reading back ahead by two. In the last of the ninth Justin Friend came on for Reading and retired the Sens in order to secure his 20th save of the season.
Today’s Game Harrisburg and Reading play for the final time in 2012. With a victory the Sens can even the season series at seven and also win the three game set between the clubs. In the rubber match Trevor Holder faces Reading’s Trevor May. Reading counters with Trevor May. May entered the season regarded as the Philadelphia Phillies top prospect according to Baseball America. The Senators have faced May three times previously this season and are 1-1.
Offensive Resurgence Over the last five games Harrisburg has hit .271 as a team. That is up from the .256 mark the Sens had hit for this season prior to the recent stretch. However 26 of Harrisburg’s 48 hits (54%) during the four-game winning streak have been for extra bases. Prior to the winning streak just 28% of Harrisburg’s hits this season had gone for extra bases. Over the stretch Jimmy VanOstrand is 8-for-21 (.381), Tim Pahuta is 6-for-16 (.375) with has 5 extra base hits and six runs batted in, Destin Hood is 7-for-20 (.350), and Sean Nicol is 5-for-13 with a home run and four driven in.
