HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SUMMER CAMP...

Your best resource is at home – you and your

child need to make this decision together.

It can make the difference between

resistance and eagerly looking forward

to camp. To help, answer the following

questions...

What are your child’s interests and goals?

For most, the number one reason to participate is fun, followed closely by the desire to learn new skills and to be with or make new friends.

Is your child ready?

Different ages mean different stages of development. One four-year-old can be ready for a full-day camp experience, while another is more content with a half-day.

What are your goals?

Are you looking for a safe environment for your child? A learning experience? An opportunity for skill development? Consider practical logistics, such as scheduling and location. Optional camp services, like the Before and After Camp Program, may help facilitate your decision.

n CAMP AGE REQUIREMENTS

Each program description lists the specific age requirements that need to be met by all campers. Want to discuss the camp age requirements with a staff member? No problem. Look for the Program Coordinator’s contact information, listed on Page 1 of this Guide. Please Note: You may be asked to withdraw your child from a camp if the listed age requirements are not met.

Health and safety are priorities for Richmond Hill. Please ensure your child’s information is accurate by completing the medical information portion on your Registration Form. Medication must be prescribed by a physician and must be stored in original containers only. They will be kept in a locked box in the camp office. If your child develops a communicable disease during Camp (e.g. Pink Eye), we ask that you inform staff immediately. n CAMPER PICK-UP AND DROP-OFF

Children should be dropped-off and picked-up in the area designated for their group, which is clearly marked at each facility. I.D. may be requested upon picking up a camper .

n PARENT CONTACT INFORMATION

For your child’s protection, it is extremely important that your emergency information is up-to-date. Please make sure that Camp staff have the correct phone numbers to contact you.

n WRIST BANDS

On the first day of camp, identification bands will be placed on the wrists of each camper. These wrist bands will assist staff in quickly identifying children that are part of Richmond Hill’s camp. Please do not remove this band from your child’s wrist until their camp is over.

NEW PROGRAM

This symbol indicates programs that are new to the Community Services Department.

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW...

n SWIMMING/WATERPARK ACTIVITIES

When a camp indicates swimming (children 9 to 14) or waterpark activities (children 6 to 8) and the camp location does not have a pool or a waterpark, children will be bussed to a nearby Richmond Hill pool supervised by certified Lifeguards or a nearby waterpark that is supervised by camp staff.

n OUTINGS

Camps that indicate outings as part of their program will not offer alternate on-site activities. Outings require the campers to take a bus to get to the outtrip location.

n RAINY DAYS

The sun doesn’t have to be shining to have a good time at camp! All camp programs will continue during inclement weather. Please dress your child appropriately.

n HUMIDEX WARNINGS

All camps will continue during humidex warnings; however, campers will be moved indoors to a more moderate climate and programs will be adjusted for indoor conditions. Please Note: Not all Richmond Hill facilities are air conditioned.

n LOST OR STOLEN ARTICLES

Richmond Hill is not responsible for any damages, or the loss or theft of any personal property brought into our facilities. Campers are encouraged to leave valuable items at home.

INTEGRATION SERVICES FOR

CAMPERS WITH DISABILITIES

The Community Services Department provides positive integrated camp experiences for children with disabilities. Should your child require extra support, arrangements for assistance can be made with one of our Integration Counsellors or with one of the enthusiastic volunteers. Please be advised that, although the Integration Counsellors do receive extra training, they are students and their qualifications are minimal. Also, an integrated camp setting may not be appropriate for all children with disabilities. Please carefully consider the needs of your child when making your camp choice. There is an additional fee for children who require the support of a paid integration counsellor. Many children with disabilities may be eligible for funding through the Ministry of Community and Social Services’ “Special Services at Home” (SSAH) Program. Inquiries regarding SSAH can be made through the Ministry Office in Aurora at 905-868-8900.

If your child has a disability, please contact 905-884-0855, ext. 226, before registering to discuss your child’s needs and support requests.
